D.J. Hayden — who nearly died after he tore a major vein in his heart during a November practice — was the featured attraction at the University of Houston pro day on Monday.
Hayden, a cornerback (5-foot-11 3/8, 189 pounds), was timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds (on the fast watch) and 4.44 seconds (on the slow watch). He ran only once due to pulling his left hamstring while running the 40. I imagine the teams on hand in Houston will split the difference on those times and Hayden’s official pro day 40 time will be 4.42 seconds. Before Hayden ran the 40, he performed a 33 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot broad jump. He was unable to do the positional workout.
Hayden is a real medical miracle guy, who many didn’t think would be able to workout at the pro day. Instead, he exceeded expectations and is 100 percent healthy (with the exception of the hamstring pull Monday, of course).
This guy could be a steal! He was a baller before sustaining that freak injury.
