Can Doug Martin carry the Buccaneers to the playoffs in 2013?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back, Doug Martin, rushed for an impressive 1454 yards and 11 touchdowns during his inaugural NFL campaign. Now, can the former Boise State Bronco buck his way beyond his rookie performance and lead the Buccaneers to the playoffs in 2013?

Martin burst onto the scene in 2012 with five games over 100 yards on the ground including one 250 yard performance against the Oakland Raiders in Week 9. The Bucs went 4-1 in games where Martin rushed for over 100 yards and 5-3 when he had 20 or more carries. A more telling stat is that Tampa was 3-6 in games that Martin failed to carry the ball at least 20 times. This fact suggests that a key to the Buccaneers success is running a balanced offense focused on the ground game, and that mean a consistent dose of Doug Martin.

Consistent running not only takes some pressure off of QB Josh Freeman as more often than not he will not be forced to win games, but additionally it will open up things in the passing game via play action when opponents are stack the box in defense of the run. Simply put, the more Tampa runs, the better they will do in the win loss column. Therefore running the ball gives Tampa Bay their best opportunity for postseason play.

Unfortunately, for the Buccaneers to make the playoffs they will have to win the NFC South as the NFC North and West are stacked and will likely produce the two conference wild card representatives. In 2012, the Bucs went 3-3 in the division beating the Carolina Panthers twice, splitting games with the Atlanta Falcons and losing to the Saints twice. It is likely that the Saints and Falcons will fight it out in 2013 for the division title which all but assures that come postseason time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be on the outside looking in.

Of course, the beauty of the NFL, and professional sports in general is that the game is decided on the field. If Doug Martin runs wild in 2013 and has an Adrian Peterson like, MVP season, then it is quite possible that Tampa will sneak up on some teams in 2013 and possibly slip into the playoffs. Martin has the skill set necessary to get it done; it is just a matter of whether or not his supporting cast will do their part to help him along the way.

Blah, blah, blah,blah.

This article sucks, but Martin is still a beast especially if the O-Line stays healthy and passing game improves.

Getting Nicks and Joseph back is gonna be awesome. Just think about what Martin did as a ROOKIE with scrub guards.

How about #5 leading us to the playoffs?  Can't put all your playoff hopes on a Hamster.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"

Love Dougie, the only guys who can carry a team to the playoffs are in QBs. You can shut just about any run game down if you're committed to stopping it. We played much better against the run this year but were also pointed at stopping it and played it much more aggressively.

\\\\\\\"This forum needs a poster like BucNY now more than ever\\\\\\\"

No. If the team didn't make the playoffs with him rushing for 1400 yards and 11 TD's, obviously having a good running back isn't enough. QB and defense needs to carry the team.

FRG is the most logical poster on this board.  You guys just don\'t like where the logical conclusions take you.

Ray Rice had a better QB and defense. Martin isn't in the same class as AP. Texans are also much better as a team . This team will only go as far as freeman takes them.

#5 lacks the consistency to do so

I thought Lovie said he wanted quickness & speed, even at the QB position?
