This is a thread to discuss the notion that “Mark Barron was played out of position in 2012”, and to show the position he and the other safeties were in as the ball was snapped. What led me to create this and look back at nearly every defensive play from 2012 is when I kept hearing that Barron was constantly left all alone as Barber “was used as a LB most of the time”, or that Barber played “in the box” most of the year. Simply untrue. This is not a thread meant to breakdown Barron’s, or any other safety’s play, but rather to simply show how the Bucs aligned their safeties all season. When looking at how Barron was played in 2012, I believe Schiano and Sheridan will play him  the same in 2013 with Goldson. Some single safety coverage over the top, but mostly flipping back and forth between FS and SS. He will play some snaps about 2-3 yard in front of Goldson, and some plays 2-3 yards behind Goldson, but mostly two deep with neither one being closer to the LOS. Schiano has publically stated that he believes both safeties are interchangeable and can play both spots. I thoroughly believe that we will see Barron used in nearly the exact same manner that he was used in 2012.

What I will do is post screenshots of every single play Barron was on the field from the Panthers game week 1 and Raiders game week 9. I had the idea to do 3 games, and just choose the 1st, 8th and 16th games, but the screenshot process what getting aggravating. I can, however, add those at a later time. The other reason I am choosing just two games is because I don’t want to have a single post go 3-4 pages with 60-80 screen shots from every single game. Now, just because I am posting pics from just two games, does not mean that I will leave out any individual play Barron was involved in from 2012. At the bottom of this post will be a breakdown of each alignment that Barron, and the other safeties, found themselves in as the ball was snapped from every game. The alignments will be broken down by number of plays from each game that he was in: Single high coverage, Two-deep coverage with Ronde deep, Two-deep coverage with Black deep, Two-deep coverage with Barron deep, Two deep coverage with neither safety deeper than the other, goal –to-goal situations, and plays with 3 deep safeties. I will note that there were less than 10 plays this year with a safety different 3rd safety instead of Black, but I will go ahead and categorize those plays under Black’s name, since that player was the 3rd safety on the field.

In these screenshots, I will use a red circle to show Barron on the field. I will use a Black circle to show Barber, and I will use a Blue circle to show Black or any other safety. There are also some shots where I will include arrows if the safeties move or shift rather radically to a certain point on the field from the time of the screen shot. This is more evident in the week one shots because I had something that I was going to do with that, but decided against it. So the arrows are pretty much irrelevant to what I am doing in the thread.

*Disclaimer* For those of you who check PFF for # of plays a player has played, my numbers won’t exactly pair up with theirs. I did not include any plays where the QB kneeled, the QB spiked the clock dead, or penalties that resulted in the play being nullified…which PFF will usally count.

Once again, I have each play broken down into 7 different alignments. First is “3 deep”…which is Black, Barber, and Barron dropped back deep in coverage and out of the box. Next, “Barron High”, which is dual safeties with Barron as the high safety, or the safety furthest from the LOS. Third is “Barber High”, which is the same dual safeties deep, with Barber as the high safety. Next is “Black High”....same thing there..dual deep safeties, with Black as  the high man. Fifth is “Safeties Even”, which is both safeties out of the box, but neither is closer to the LOS and the other. Sixth is “Single High Safety”, which will show how many snaps we had only one safety back deep and I have sub categories denoting how many snaps one of the 3 safeties was the single his safety while the other blitzed or had crept up into the box. Last, is “goal-to-go safety situations”….which was made into a separate category seeing that everything is so cramped due to such a short field, that the safeties are essentially in the box. This category will not only be used for “__and goal” plays, but also plays that took place at our 10 yard line and in. Now…onto the screenshots. These are in order from the 1st play in the 1st, to the last play in the 4th.

Wow, great work Chase. Barber stated recently that the Bucs often have a safety half in the box.

In the OP, I stated that I had was going to post the plays from the week 17 game vs ATL.
Well...here they are. Also, I'm thinking that I will probably go ahead post screen shots from every play from all 16 games this past season in the coming weeks. That way people can get a sense of how our safeties lined up. These shots will also show how the rest of the defense lined up as well right as the ball was snapped.

Once again, these plays are posted in order from first to last.

Week 16

3 deep safeties – 1 play
Barron High – 16 plays
Barber High – 7 plays
Black High – 13 plays
Safeties Even – 16 plays
Single High Safety – Barron(1 play) Barber(1 play) Black(2 plays)
Goal-to go safety situations – 4 plays
