I just think that 7 years is a bit longer than a "period of time".

One of my best friend's parents divorced after 40 yrs of marriage after his dad admitted that he was gay and that he'd been living a lie that he didn't wanna live anymore. He'd attempted suicide on multiple occasions which at the time was attributed to depression. Turns out mom had known for years but agreed to keep it a secret. Crazy stuff.

There's tons of stories just like that

The only people who have speculated that are the people looking for an agenda.  So far, there's been nothing to indicate that he's going to sue if he doesn't get signed anywhere.

Agree, it is total speculation on my part and came from something I read somewhere else.  That being said if he gets released I believe there will be an issue made of it.

How far that issue goes???  No idea..

how about this? he came out now because he has little to lose (end of career):Possibly

and its an actual topic of discussion in society right now? WHY?Homosexuals have been a part of society forever why the need to announce it to the world?

In other words, there's a gay play in the NBA at the beginning of his career and that guy is staying in the closet because his  future depends on him keeping his job

Do you actually believe that a NBA player that is gay wouldn't be able to keep his job? In today's PC world I don't think that scenario could ever happen.

I just see little need for making such announcements.   It just fans the flames for radicals on both sides.  Nothing good will come of it.

Yeah, because homosexuality is so accepted in the African-American community. Uuuuugh

Wake up. No marginal or role playing NBA player at the beginning of his career is likely to come out. Have you ever been on a team? Do you read the posts on this thread?

Wake up?   I just don't see the need to tell the world about it...Do you wish to announce publicly to the world all your personal sexual issues to everyone?   Don't care if you are hetero, bi, or homo    I just don't see why it is so important to announce it to the world.  If you like to dress up in women's clothes  do I need to know about it?

What if you like to be whipped and lead around by a leash?  do you want to announce that publicly?   Doesn't matter to me if you are ashamed or proud of such things I just don't see the point in going public with such things... LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME... I AM ????

lol, that ^^^^ is the kind of stupidity homosexuals have to deal with.  homosexuality = dress up in women's clothes = whipped and led around by leash = homosexuals come out for "attention."

Good grief . . . .  Archie, Edith is calling you

I don't think his question was 'the kind of stupidity homosexuals have to deal with' is addressed in your response.  The question is why do such personal issues need to be brought to the media?  The unstated question is why does the media give every such question such import?  Nothing odd or unbecoming with the question and if you have the answer perhaps that is better response.

Of course it is, his comments are born of the (ignorant) belief that a person chooses to be gay just like a person might choose to engage in any of the items he linked to being gay.  A gay person does not come out publicly to flaunt their sexuality.  Goodness.  A gay person comes out to give other gay people hope, a community with a very high suicide rate and a community that is still subject to substantial discrimination and hate crimes.

The reason gay participation in sports is relevant should not even need an explanation, but the notion -- thrown out there by Archie . .. err Runole . . that this guy came out now to set up a discrimination lawsuit . .  well, absurd is not a strong enough word.  The guy came out now because it is timely given the discussion in other sports AND because ... .MOST IMPORTANTLY . . he is at the end of his career. That is the OBVIOUS point. Right now there are one or more gay players in the NBA at the beginning of their careers and they would NEVER come out because they have so much to lose and, indeed, would likely lose so much.  There are those in society (fans) who might not care whether a new NBA player is gay or not, but that is NOT likely the common sentiment with teammates and employers, because SOME teammates and employers,  like some of society, view homosexuality as a CHOICE, like one of several choices listed by Runole and some still (ignorantly) link homosexuality to sexual deviance because they think it is a CHOICE  So, like many issues that don't stand up to reasonable scrutiny, here is the simple question:

WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOOSE TO BE HOMOSEXUAL?

Being a homosexual means having less rights than most, being the subject of ridicule and violence and hate crimes.  Being a homosexual means having a VERY LARGE segment of society think you are a sinner, another segment of society think you are similar to a pedophile .. . it means no long-term care from a loving spouse (in many places), no adoptions, blacklisted from many jobs, denied advancement in others . .

The reason the issue is so over sold in the press is because the rights were under sold for so long.  Today's over reaction in the press is born of yesterday's under reaction in life.

The point is made is not what you just responded to.  Runole simply stated is why does one wish to take their sexual preference to a media outlet?

What right does a straight man has that a homosexual does not?

First, not a "sexual PREFERENCE"  That is the choice issue I addressed and that I dont think anyone in the thread has answered
Second, I did explain why. In fact, I explained why Runole's explanation was ludicrous and then explained why.  One can quibble with the hieight of the barrier, but barriers do exist.

Being a homosexual means having less rights than most,

What right does a straight man has that a homosexual does not?

The right to be treated equal and the failure in this regard manifests itself in many forms but a couple obvious ones are adoption, unions, long-term benefits . .

Now, care to answer my question?

Why would a human being CHOOSE to be gay?

Why would a human being CHOOSE to be gay?

I don't know.  Why would a human being CHOOSE to be a lame, asskissing, oblivious hypocrite?

Some things we'll simply never know the answer to.

So he shouldn't have said preference.  No need to make a big deal out of that to avoid answering.  Why does anyone feel going to the media to explain their sexuality via a newscast?

Here's a similar question:

Why would a choosy mom, or any other human being, CHOOSE Jiff ?

Why, Peanut Butter Boy, why?
