Interesting theory

Except it totally ignores the events of Sept 11th.

and now Pannetta and Gates explain how Barry stepped on it... won't be long before he is blaming his staff for not following his 'leadership'

Is it me, or are football off-topic forums 90% Republican?

There is no good answer to this.
If Obama goes to war, Republicans will blame him for "endangering" American lives, by the tactics mentioned, the only casualties would be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

If Obama does nothing, Republicans will call him the next Neville Chamberlain, appeasing a tyrant and letting him get away with war crimes.

If Obama asks for Congressional support for a strike, he is weak, and can't lead the country.

Is there any way the typical Republican can support our President? McCain (which over 40 million of you voted for) wants military strikes on Assad forces and chemical weapon sites.

By the way, is there an official "Bush dropped the ball on 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan" Thread? If Obama failed at bluffing, so did Bush, as the DPRK detonated a nuclear weapon under his watch, and what did we do? Nothing. Or if the right-wing folks in SE USA want to get specific about embassy attacks, how about this?

Wow, you make Obama sound like a loser. But, hey, a good retro bashing of Bush makes Obama all better again, right?

It is the way he handled it that is the problem. What's more, he made himself and the country look stupid in the process.

He'll make up for it when he speaks with the Irani President...  :-[

Guess not, the delegation from Iran advised Obama they didn't have time to meet with him....

Yeah, yahoo news is an excellent source for entertainment isn't it.  And what exactly has Assad won?  An increasingly unstable country where he is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands Syrians?  Or perhaps extra judicial killings and sectarian violence is the logical way to dispel any sense of democracy to ensure that you walk around with balls by having the opposition murdered.  Or better yet - becoming the premier country in the middle east where you must rely on one faction of extremist to fight the other extremist.  Yeah he won alright, won a **CENSORED**hole thats worse than Iraq.

Interesting point - how exactly do you think he should have handled the situation when Russia invaded Crimea?

Interesting point - how exactly do you think he should have handled the situation when Russia invaded Crimea?

1. The first thing you DON'T do is threaten Putin with "costs" and "consequences". That's red rag to a bull and after Syria et al he will just laugh at you and then ramp it up just to give you the middle finger which he did.

2. You have to decide if the Crimea is really part of Ukraine. It was part of Russia for 200 years or so until the break up of the USSR and became part of the Ukraine 20 years ago. There is some legitimacy in the Russian (unofficial) claim. Let's say for arguments sake we decide that it is.

3. You offer immediate and financial help to the Ukrainian Govt for energy costs and other incidentals.

4. You immediately authorize the Keystone pipeline. The Russian Govt relies totally on petro dollars to fund it and authorizing the pipeline would very quickly cause a drop in the price of oil due to futures and speculation.

5. Reduce the red tape/export restrictions on natural gas to Europe. We have tonnes of it and that is the huge bargaining chip Putin has over the EU. Again, not an immediate physical impact but will impact the current price of natural gas and sends the message that we will destroy your monopoly and income.

6. Re-establish the air defence sites that Obama cancelled in Poland and the Czech Republic. A big eff you and sends a message.

7. Open up negotiations with some country like Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania about a permanent naval presence on one of those countries. A possible permanent US fleet in the Baltic would have Putin in conniptions. You don't have to mean it, but the threat of denying the Russians the Baltic sends a huge message.

8. Send the 6th Fleet on "routine" and "pre-arranged" naval exercises with Turkey. I know Turkey isn't exactly our best friend right now but they have a hell of lot more to fear from Russia than the US.

9. Look at what immediate financial restrictions you can impose on Russian banks, Particularly any that look after Putin's estimated $40billion fortune.

How's that for a start?
