FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will make the quarterback one of the league's highest paid players.

The extension, which came just before the first practice of training camp, guarantees Ryan $59 million, and can be worth up to $103.75 million, a $20.75 million average annual salary, league sources told ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen. Ryan will make $63 million in the first three years, the sources said.

Ryan's extension ranks him near Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning among the league's top-paid players.

The team will hold a news conference at 6:15 p.m. ET.

Ryan had one year remaining on his rookie contract, but the Falcons had been working for months to lock him up for the long term. He is the face of the franchise, and the team wanted to make certain he is around when the Falcons move into a new stadium in 2017.

He is coming off the best season of his five-year career and took the Falcons to last season's NFC Championship Game. Ryan has led the Falcons, a franchise that never had back-to-back winning seasons before his arrival, to five consecutive winning seasons.

They average 11 wins a year ever since he was drafted and they sucked balls before him.  He is worth it.

How does that make him worthy of being the 2nd highest paid QB in the league?

I thought Lovie said he wanted quickness & speed, even at the QB position?

That's the trend in the NFL now and Ryan's timing was just right.  Teams now realize its a QB's league and for a good one teams are willing to use 1/6 of their cap to keep them.  You can win with a crappy defense.  You can win without a run game.  But you can't win without a QB.

Funny that both Super Bowl teams had a good running game and a good defense.

It certainly doesn't hurt to have good defenses and a good run game.  But most importantly they  also had good QBs and the team with the better QB won.

Exactly.

It warrants big money but it doesn't warrant getting paid more than guys with Super Bowls.

The Falcons window is closing.  This pretty much seals that.   They have NO playmakers on defense.  Ryan throws to Tony G 80% of the time on 3rd down.  When that comfort blanket is gone, Ryan regresses.  And Julio will be expecting a big payday soon too.  Falcons take a step down in 2013 and are a middle of the pack team by 2014.

Yep. And Mike Smith, Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez, etc. had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Gotta love how the majority of people on this site think the QB is completely responsible for wins and losses.

Uhhh, didn't Joe Flacco just win a Superbowl last year?

I predict right now that they are on the outside lookin in when the 2013 playoffs take place

and did he not have the greatest run in playoff history for a QB?

Completing 54% of your passes = Greatest run in playoff history?

It plays a big role, but a lot of people give the QB all the blame/credit and it is ridiculous.

Matt's worth it. And I'm not saying he's a "great QB" either.

He's an accurate short medium strength passer which can serve just as well as Flacco, the Manning, or brees. His main ability is to get it there, and with their approach to the WR position, they need a QB who can do just that.

Plus, you don't just let a guy go who pretty much turned the tide for your team. It wasn't all him but he was a major part. Especially if you consider their checkered QB history. Locking him up long term was the logical conclusion, the amount paid was, or will be, on-par with what we will see in the near future because of the CBA vet agreements.

Naismith was right about Revis. Everyone else is a dummy.
