If the Bucs are on the clock in round one and they see a guy sitting there at QB who they believe is a FRANCHISE QB, then they have to take him. Period. You don't pass on that opportunity, even if it turns out badly, because you have to trust your own scouting. That said, I do have my doubts about the Bucs taking a QB high if Schiano is still the head coach in 2014. I tend to believe they'd go defense with the first pick.

Here are a list of first-round QB busts throughout the years. Unfortunately, first on the list (sorted by date, not bustiness) is our one recent failure, Josh Freeman:

It would make no sense to take a QB you didn't have a lot of conviction on being better than Glennon with the first pick. I'm sold neither on Glennon or the group of QBs who will be in the draft and it might not be a bad idea to wait til the second pick whether an early 2nd rounder or move back into the first to get a guy you like and draft a pass rusher first. I agree that if Schiano is back that it will lessen the chances of a QB with the first pick.

Happy and Peppy and Bursting with love.

All picks have a chance of busting, but you're doing a disservice talking about players like Freeman who were picked in the back half of the first round. The Bucs are almost a lock to have a top 5 pick and QBs picked in the top 5 actually pan out at a pretty solid rate.

FRG is the most logical poster on this board.  You guys just don\'t like where the logical conclusions take you.

Free sucked, but putting him in the same conversation with Leave, Akili, and Russell us just silly.

Selecting a QB outside round 1 and hitting on the pick is almost like winning the lottery. The odds are so low. Every single pick can bust no matter what position that player plays. Tim Couch gets a horrible wrap, he was pretty solid considering what was given to him coming into the league to an expansion team. His #s are comparable to the way  Troy Aikman started his career.

Agree, at least we got a little something out of him. Some of those busts never contributed at all.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"

Freeman is a disappointment, not a bust. Now if he were drafted 2nd overall and had high expectations, then I might call him a bust.

Depends on your definition of a panning out.

We traded up to get the guy in the first because he was supposed to be a "franchise" QB.   He's a bust as of today

EDIT: If you saw the 1st list of 17, I sorted on the wrong column and left out some of the QB, below is the correct information.

Here are the QB's selected in the top 5 since 1993.  How many true franchise QB's do you see?  I see maybe 4 real franchise QB, 9 maybe at best and and 14 clearly not a franchise QB.  So split the maybe's (give the bonus to yes) and that is 9 yes and 18 no.  So a 1 in three shot of a franchise QB by my count.

He embraced bust the moment he heard the dreaded C  word.

17 guys: two or three superstars, six or seven very good; the other eight were disappointments to dome degree. So slightly better than 50-50 to be very good of better.

I count 12 from that list including Vick and Palmer. He was pretty damn good until that guy took out his knee.

I counted 11-12 if injuries didn't exist.

Injuries happen. But they're freak, nearly unpredictable accidents. It would suck if our would-be future QB had his career ruined to an injury, but it wouldn't make picking him a bad decision
