The question is what do people expect out of him to earn this deal. If he gets 50/800/6......would people be ok with that? I would.

$5 million isn't that bad.
 Â
Bernard Berrian signed a six-year, $42 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings that included $16 million in guaranteed money. He only had 48 catches for 964 yards. Last year. His best year was the year before and he only had 71 catches for 950 yards. Oh and Berrian was a #1 WR.

Clayton has been the #2 or lower since his 2nd year and has been in Gruden's dog house for most of that. He has some really good tools and I'd like to see what he can do in a new offense. Clayton only has $10 guaranteed so that's basically a 2 year rental and if he sucks...they can cut him.

Now is it a little too much? Probably. I'd rather see Clayton in the $3.5-4 million range. So...he got an extra $1 million. With our cap room...and having pretty much only Bryant...we needed to land 2 WRs. Clayton, Henderson and Washington were probably the top 3 WRs out there. So, it's not that bad of a deal. I mean...we have to spend our money somewhere right? At least we now have something and if we can land either Washinton or Henderson...we are going to have a lot of weapons to throw to.

Only 1,914 yards receiving in two seasons? Only how much in YPC?
How many TDs for Berrian?
MC isn't even in the same league as Bernard Berrian, let alone Bernard Malamud, Bernie Bickerstaff, Weekend at Bernie's or Bernie Williams.

As the number two WR? Hell yeah.

I'd be very happy with those numbers out of Clayton

If he gets that I think the deal would be well worth it.  We will see.

That's not good enough, Michael. There was no justification to bring him back and under these terms our inexperienced FO got taken to the cleaners.
Some of you say don't pay Ward (a 1,000-yard RB who ran for 5.6 YPC) this type of money and yet we paid it to a guy who's a below-average No. 3 WR?
That's mismanagement of the highest degree.

Agreed.

I almost feel sick looking at that.

I am almost positive Clayton will do next to NOTHING this upcoming season.

And I can hear all the excuses already:

He is in a new system.  He has a new QB.  He is wide open and McCown is missing him.  He had a busted pinky finger.  His confidence is shaken from last year.

Well the wide open excuse was actually a reason last year, not an excuse. I saw it for myself many times....dude was WIDE OPEN. I'm not saying people don't have a right to dislike this deal but he did do enough last year to have better numbers. He's gotta know this is it, if he plays poorly he has nothing else left to say.

And if that was funny i'd laugh. Clayton has talent...maybe not the greatest focus at times but he has talent.

SunnyD, yes sir I would be happy but that is like saying if Luke throws for 4100 and 33 TD's would you be happy?

Clayton has talent? Dude what have you been watching Clayton do for the past 4 years besides dropping passes and blocking well?

Yeah I would. It's obvious you completely hate the guy but thats not the point.

The Point is he doesn't have to be having tremendous earth shattering production to make this contract worth it, agreed?
