The House voted to condemn  the violence in Iran and expressing support for the dissidents there. Congressman Ron Paul has been under scrutiny for his lone vote against the House resolution. Ron Paul has always voted against symbolic measures in the House and supported a non-interventionist foreign policy earning him the nickname Dr. No. His decision was not the most politically savvy especially if he seeks higher office but he is a man who puts principle over politics. Ron Paul in his statement said he admired President Obama’s cautious approach to the situation in Iran, and said U.S. criticism of other countries was often “selective” when making a political point. He also stated that we should always be very cautious about “condemning” the actions of governments overseas. The president on Saturday issued a statement about Iran, invoking America's civil right struggle.

A student named Neda Salehi Agha Soltan who was protesting against the regime was murdered by the Police in Tehran and has become a symbol of the movement. Her fiance has confirmed she was neither a supporter of Ahmadinejad or Mousavi.

The American peoples sympathy and moral support for the protesters against an authoritarian regime in Iran is right. However this bill is being promoted by those who want war with Iran. I question their sympathy towards the protesters who have been murdered by the regime when military action against Iran would cost hundreds of thousands of lives not to mention their strong support for the Iraq War. The sponsors of the bill in the House are Republicans Eric Cantor and Mike Pence and Democrat Howard Berman, all of whom support a hard line against Iran and have strong ties to the Pro-Israel Likudnik Lobby known as AIPAC.

AIPAC is pushing the Iran Diplomatic Enhancement Act in Congress, which mandates for greater economic sanctions against Iran, which could cripple their economy, which is dependent on oil exports.  Israel has elected a hawkish right Wing Government led by Netanyahu who has vowed to take a hard-line approach against Iran, including military strikes if necessary.

American Interventionism has caused much of our problems in Iran in the 1st place with the ousting of Mohammed Mossadegh and installment of the Shah. Change in Iran will only come organically through the people who are fed up with the authoritarian regime. Military actions or economic sanctions will only turn the Iranian people into our enemies for decades to come.
