Exactly. I don't think Tony would fire his DC after winning the SB.

well technically Lovie didn't fire anyone either ... they just didn't renew his contract ... his contract was up and now he's basically a FA Coach LOL

If I read it right, it sounded like the team thinks Rivera will be a HC very soon and thinks by signing a new DC now instead of next year, it's better for them ... I don't know, but that sounds kinda funny to me ... something else must have been going on there and thats the best thing they could comeup with.

Didn't Lovie learn anything about loyalty from Tony?

rivera will be just fine, he turned into a legitimate HC candidate under lovie.  although it's tough to fire any members of your staff after a SB win, i'm with those who say indy would do themselves a big favor picking him up and creating a legitimate line of succession given dungy's public musings about his limited NFL shelf life

but, as itch hints at, tony isn't a man who's quick to let people go when they're not making it happen for him, much less when they've pulled a defense together just in time for a superbowl run.

Bears | Rivera not renewed, team likely to promote Babich
Mon, 19 Feb 2007 11:47:12 -0800

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Chicago Bears have opted not to renew the contract of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, leaving one of the top defensive minds in the game without a job. The team wanted to pursue a long-term plan for the position due to Rivera's candidacy for numerous head coaching positions and head coach Lovie Smith felt the need to move in a different direction sooner rather than later. Smith will likely promote linebackers coach Bob Babich to the newly-vacated defensive coordinator position.

Wow!!  I don't think anyone saw this coming.

I think Indy would be a great fit, and allow him to take over for Dungy after he retires.

I wonder if this is part of Lovie's negotiations (in other words, Babich is cheaper than re-signing Rivera, leaving more money to pay what Lovie is looking for).

That is incredible to me - there has to be more to it than Rivera was looking at other positions for advancement bc that is a past time with coaches in general.

Any colleges still looking for a HC?  Probably too late for him to hook up with any team except as maybe a position coach.
