But, Marinelli is not about to lose defensive tackle Cory Redding, who can become an unrestricted free agent March 2.

The Lions have until Thursday to designate Redding as a franchise player, a move that effectively takes a player off the market. There is no doubt the Lions will use the tag on Redding. It guarantees Redding a base salary of $6.775 million for 2007.

"You know the respect I have for Cory," Marinelli said Tuesday. "Right now, we're working very hard to get him to sign. I want to keep working at it. He's a special, special player."

All posts are opinions in case you are too stupid to figure that out on your own without me saying it over and over.

With practically every team in the NFL having a major chunk of free cap space, and this years franchise tag numbers likely to be way below the FA market value, it is no shock we are seeing franchise tags used all over the place.

Pity the Buccs don't have a player worth franchising.   :-[

Lions | Still negotiating with Redding
Wed, 21 Feb 2007 08:16:31 -0800

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports the Detroit Lions are in constant negotiations with soon-to-be free agent DL Cory Redding to try and sign him before Thursday, Feb. 22, which is the deadline a team has to designate a player with the franchise or transition tag. "We've been working very hard to try to get him to sign," coach Rod Marinelli said. "I still just want to keep working at that. He's a special, special player." If both parties were unable to reach an agreement, the club will be forced to designate Redding as their franchise player, limiting his availability on the open market next month.

I would think this makes Shaun Rogers much more attainable.

Lions place franchise tag on DT Cory Redding

Lions designated defensive tackle Cory Redding their franchise player.

ESPN's John Clayton reports Redding "is not happy" and is hoping to be dealt. Detroit had been trying to sell Redding on the idea of being part of a potentially dominant interior duo alongside Shaun Rogers, but he'd have none of it. It currently seems unlikely that a long-term deal is in the works. He'll get $6,775,000 if he plays under the one-year tender in 2007. Feb. 21 - 6:39 pm et
