Bucs Lose Coin Flip, Pick Fourth In Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Their draft position was determined Friday morning when the NFL held a coin flip at the Combine in Indianapolis to determine where the Bucs and Cleveland Browns will pick in April.



 
The National Football League held a coin flip at the Combine in Indianapolis on Friday morning to determine whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Cleveland Browns would hold the third overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen called heads, but the coin flip came up tails, giving the Buccaneers the fourth overall pick in the draft in April.  

The Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions have the first and second overall picks in the 2007 NFL Draft, respectively. The Cleveland Browns will pick third.

Both the Bucs and Browns finished the 2006 regular season with 4-12 records.

Most tiebreaker situations take into consideration the result of a head-to-head meeting. The Bucs downed the Browns in December 22-7. But head-to-head matchups and results don’t factor in to tiebreakers that determine draft position in the NFL.

Instead, the league relies on strength of schedule for tiebreaker purposes. But the Bucs and Browns finished the 2006 regular season with identical strength of schedule percentage (.535).

Tampa Bay hasn’t had a top four pick in the NFL draft since 1992, when the Buccaneers owned the second pick. However, the Bucs had already traded that pick to Indianapolis in exchange for quarterback Chris Chandler.

Although it lost the coin flip and has the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Tampa Bay will pick ahead of Cleveland in the second round with the 35th overall pick. 

The Bucs own four picks in the first three rounds of the draft, including two second-round selections thanks to the trade that sent defensive tackle Booger McFarland to Indianapolis in exchange for the Colts' second-round pick.
