Tampa Bay’s pending trade with Denver that was supposed to send quarterback Jake Plummer to the Buccaneers in exchange for a mid-round draft pick likely was nullified Friday afternoon when Plummer decided to retire, according to NFL Network.
The Buccaneers’ attempt to trade for quarterback Jake Plummer apparently fell apart Friday afternoon when Plummer nullified the trade by deciding to retire, according to NFL Network.
The Bucs were going to give the Broncos what was believed to be a fourth-round draft pick in exchange for Plummer.
Plummer was well versed in the West Coast offense. He got the Broncos off to a 7-4 start last season, but he was benched in favor of rookie Jake Cutler.
The 6-foot-2, 212-pound Plummer, who entered the league in 1997 with the Arizona Cardinals, has completed 57.1 percent of his career passes for 29,253 yards while tossing 161 touchdowns and 160 interceptions.
The 32-year-old Plummer had 136 career starts, and he produced an impressive 40-18 record as Denver’s starter.
Plummer also had good mobility. He rushed for 1,851 yards and 17 touchdowns during his pro career.
The Bucs re-signed QB Chris Simms to a two-year contract this offseason, but they made it clear they intended to add a veteran quarterback to their roster.
With Plummer apparently out of the picture, the Buccaneers are expected to target Houston QB David Carr via a trade and/or Philadelphia QB Jeff Garcia in free agency.
