Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent offensive lineman Sean Mahan spent Friday in Pittsburgh, and his agent has entered contract negotiations with the Steelers. Mahan, 26, has started 36 career games while playing both guard positions and center.

Tampa Bay is still interested in re-signing free agent offensive lineman Sean Mahan, but the Buccaneers might have to act quickly if they are going to accomplish that feat.

Mahan, who visited with Pittsburgh Friday, was said to have enjoyed his visit, and his agent has entered contract negotiations with the Steelers.

The 6-foot-3, 301-pound Mahan has started 36 of the 57 games he’s played in since entering the NFL in 2003 as a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame.

Mahan has proven to be a versatile player. He started all 16 games at right guard in 2005. In 2004, he started the final eight games of the season in place of injured center John Wade. Last season, Mahan started 12 of Tampa Bay’s 16 regular season games. Most of his playing time came at left guard in placed of injured G Dan Buenning.

The Bucs feel Mahan’s future in the NFL is at the center position. The team expressed interest in Al Johnson and Jeremy Newberry before they signed with their new teams earlier in the week.
