The Bucs sported pads for their Sunday morning practice at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. Bucs LB Derrick Brooks suited up for the practice, but he didn’t practice. Former Bucs LB Shelton Quarles attended Saturday morning’s practice. Get more news and notes in this update.
QUARLES ATTENDS PRACTICE
Former Tampa Bay middle linebacker Shelton Quarles was on hand to observe the Bucs’ training camp practice at Disney’s Wide World of Sports on Sunday morning.
Quarles, who turns 36 in September, was released earlier in the offseason after he failed a team physical.
It is unknown whether Quarles was just an observer at practice or if he was attending Bucs' training camp for another reason. Stay tuned.
BROOKS STILL OUT
Bucs weakside linebacker Derrick Brooks suited up for the team’s first padded practice on Sunday morning, but his hamstring injury kept him from participating in the workout.
Brooks was also sidelined during Saturday’s morning practice. The Bucs are hopeful Brooks will return to action sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, Cato June has been taking reps in Brooks’ place, and Bucs head coach Jon Gruden said after practice that June has looked extremely quick and played well in the 10-time Pro Bowler’s place.
BOSTON BACK?
Tampa Bay wide receiver David Boston made the 53-man roster last season, but he was released before the Bucs even played their first regular season game.
After suffering back-to-back season-ending knee injuries with the Miami Dolphins and struggling to get back to 100 percent last year, Boston appears to have returned to form.
During Sunday morning’s practice, Boston, who received extra reps with Joey Galloway excused from practice to attend Arena Bowl XXI to watch the Columbus Destroyers take on the San Jose Sabercats, hauled in a 50-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Garcia in the end zone for a score.
Not only does Boston stand a good chance of making the 53-man roster, Gruden suggested he was competing with Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall for the starting Z (flanker) job.
BACK TO WORK
Tampa Bay is scheduled to conduct a two-hour practice at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex on Sunday afternoon. The practice will be held in shorts, jerseys and helmets.
