Just one day after placing linebackers Antoine Cash (knee) and Sam Olajubutu (Achilles tendon) on injured reserve, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a trade on Tuesday, sending an undisclosed draft pick to the New York Jets in exchange for LB Jerry Mackey.

Mackey originally entered the National Football League as an undrafted free agent in April. He signed with the Buccaneers after playing collegiately at Syracuse, where he recorded 202 tackles, three sacks and an interception.

Mackey has the ability to play both outside and middle linebacker.

Although Mackey a versatile player, the Bucs have not ruled out the possibility of acquiring another free agent linebacker. 

"I can’t comment on that at this point, but we’re looking for players," Bucs head coach Jon Gruden said when asked if the team was interested in signing former Eagles MLB Jeramiah Trotter, who was recently released.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Mackey, who is the great nephew of Hall of Famer John Mackey, signed with the Jets this summer after being released by the Buccaneers in June.
