The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed Cadillac Williams on injured reserve Monday and spent the rest of the day inquiring about the availability of several running backs, including Corey Dillon, who is believed to be retired.
Tampa Bay has spent the past 24 hours inquiring about availability of several running backs, including Corey Dillon, who is believed to be retired.
Dillon, 32, requested – and received -- his release from the New England Patriots during the offseason. He is the Patriots’ record-holder for rushing yards (1,635 yards) in a single season. However, Dillon rushed for just 812 yards while scoring 13 touchdowns in 2006, which was his last season in New England.
The Bucs had not scheduled a visit with Dillon as of Monday evening.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Dillon originally entered the NFL in 1997 with the Cincinnati Bengals. He rushed for 11,241 yards (4.3 avg.) and 82 touchdowns while hauling in 244 passes for 1,913 yards and seven touchdowns during his 10-year career in the NFL.
The 3-1 Bucs have the 8th-ranked ground attack in the NFL, averaging 137 yards rushing per game. While the Bucs could rely on Michael Pittman and Earnest Graham to fill the void left by Williams, they are also interested in adding depth to their running back position.
The Bucs are exploring several possibilities, including signing a free agent, trading for a running back or possibly even promoting 2007 seventh-round pick Kenneth Darby from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Kenneth Darby played terrific in the pre-season. With Pittman, Graham, and Darby, I think we would be improving our running attack. I was never a Cadillac fan.

I think Ronde needs to call his brother and ask him for a favor, one more season!!! Tiki would make this offense dangerous!! I know it's far fetched, but everybody has to dream.

According to the MNF crew, Dillon turned us down. He wanted to be a number one back in NE; he's not going to come out of retirement to split carries three ways here.

Michael Turner from San Diego? That would the THE deal to make if possible... that guy is an incredible north/south runner and when he comes in to change the pace up from Tomlinson, I'm always seeing him break off 10+ yard gains... I'm sure that some of it has to do with running behind Tomlinson but I've always thought San Diego had a great 2nd option in Turner. I think he's got talent and durability.... let's get Turner.
