Tampa Bay assistant defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake has officially been hired by Detroit to serve as the Lions' defensive backs coach, PewterReport.com is reporting. According to his agent, Brian Levy, Lake signed a two-year deal with the Lions on Saturday.

PewterReport.com is reporting that Tampa Bay assistant defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake was hired by Detroit on Saturday to serve as the Lions' defensive backs coach.

Lake, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the month, interviewed with Detroit on Thursday. He spent the 2006 season working alongside former Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry, who was hired to be Rod Marinelli's defensive coordinator in 2007. The Lions are hoping Lake can help Detroit's defense, which ranked 32nd in the NFL in yards and points last season.

The 31-year-old Lake was offered a contract by the Bucs at the end of the 2007 season, but the promotion in Detroit proved to be more appealing.

Lake worked closely with Bucs defensive backs coach Raheem Morris in 2007. Both men played integral roles in helping Tampa Bay's defense finish the season ranked No. 2 overall and No. 1 against the pass.

The blow of losing an up-and-coming coach like Lake appeared to be lightened a bit Friday when the Bucs re-signed defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

The Buccaneers currently have two unsigned coaches -- quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett and senior assistant/offensive line Aaron Kromer. The Bucs must also fill the voids at the running backs coach and assistant defensive backs coach positions, which were created by the departure of Art Valero (St. Louis) and Lake, respectively.

Tampa Bay could find successors for both coaches while in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. Practices start on Monday.

As in life so in business, nothing stays the same. On the field or in the meeting room things will always change. The sucess or lack there of will be determined in how they handle the change.I'm sure there will be more to come.

I hope that Marinelli eventually opens the books and realize that he's taken quite a few of our coaches... maybe it is time for him to give us a deal. Tampa is a coach farm, and we aren't getting any compensation for it.

Marinelli has not "taken" any of our coaches.

Joe Barry's contract expired and so did Jimmy Lake's. Both coaches were fair game and apparently we didn't offer, or did not want to offer them a better deal than the Lions. Tough but this is just business.

Scott, any inside info on who the candidates to replace Jimmy Lake and Art Valero are?

Can there be any better proof that Kiffin is a legend than when his assistants go on in the NFL to become great themselves? It shows that Monte 1.) knows how to spot great potential in both players and coaches, and 2.) knows how to develop that talent.

GO MONTE GO MONTE GO MONTE GO!

Captain Jack

We had no shot at retaining Joe Barry. He was a gone as soon as his contract was up and that was expected. Lake just moved up the ranks, that's all. He was behind Morris, who is behind Kiffen at least for the next several years. For Lake's own career, this was a good move. Now if only the Lions get him some real DB's to coach....
