Bucs Sign WR Bryant |

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free agent wide receiver Antonio Bryant on Monday. While Bryant is a playmaking wide receiver, he has had some run-ins with the law and faced an NFL suspension. The 27-year old deep threat has a combination of speed and toughness the Bucs wanted.
In addition to signing Falcons free agent running back Warrick Dunn to a two-year contract on Monday, the Buccaneers also inked free agent wide receiver Antonio Bryant to a deal.
Terms of the contract weren’t immediately available.
Bryant, 27, originally entered the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys in 2002. He played collegiately at Pittsburgh and entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick.
The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Bryant has caught 250 career passes for 3,837 yards (15.3 avg.) and 19 touchdowns.
The Bucs have had their eye on Bryant since May 23, 2007, which is when the team had him in for a workout. However, the team opted against signing him, partially due to some of the on and off the field trouble he had in the past.
After two seasons with the Cowboys, Bryant was traded to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for WR Quincy Morgan after a well-document argument between Bryant and then-head coach Bill Parcells.
The change of scenery appeared to do Bryant some good. He had the best season of his career in 2005 when he hauled in a career-high 69 passes for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns.
He caught a total of 127 passes for 1,821 yards and eight touchdowns during his two-year stint in Cleveland before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2006.
During the 2006 offseason, Bryant signed a four-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He caught 40 passes for 733 yards (18.3 avg.) and three touchdowns as San Francisco’s primary receiver before getting sidelined by off-the-field issues.
On Nov. 19, 2006 Bryant was reportedly arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and resisting arrest after being pulled over in his Lamborghini, which was traveling faster than 100 miles per hour on a major California highway.
In December of 2006, Bryant was benched for the first quarter of a regular season game for disciplinary reasons. According to published reports, 49ers head coach Mike Nolan disciplined Bryant for being late to a team meeting.
It wasn’t long before Bryant was in trouble again. With two games remaining in the 2006 regular season, the NFL suspended Bryant four games for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
As a result, Bryant missed the final two games of the 2006 regular season and was released by the 49ers on Mar. 1, 2007.
Last offseason Bryant pleaded no contest to the reckless driving charges stemming from the November, 2006 incident. According to NFL.com, he was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,312. Prosecutors also dropped the resisting arrest charge as part of the deal.
Because Bryant refused to take a sobriety test when pulled over in November of 2006, his driver’s license was automatically suspended for one year. Prosecutors reportedly didn’t follow through with a DUI charge because of a lack of evidence.
League sources have informed PewterReport.com that Bryant served his suspension while sitting out of the NFL in 2007, which means he would be eligible to play for the Bucs in Week 1 of the 2008 regular season if he earn were to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
That’s not a given as Tampa Bay has five veteran wide receivers – Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall and Paris Warren – already on its 2008 roster, and still could draft a receiver in April.

Another talented person with character questions... You know what they say, you can take the person out of the ghetto...
Anyways, probably get attacked for saying that but it definitely has some truth to it (based on numbers.).. Of course it doesn't apply to everyone.
Here is to hoping he has a revelation and becomes an ideal citizen and superstar WR.

i think he could be a great asset to a team that needs to play galloway less because he tires out through the season.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt until he screws up; the same way I did Boston. I do not fault this organization for giving players a second chance in this league. If they screw up again, they are done and these players know it. It is a low risk, high reward situation for us.

Color me unenthused. This guy seems even riskier than J. Stevens or D. Boston was. I honestly haven't seen enough of this guy on the field to comment on his skills, but he better be pretty friggin' good to outweight all this baggage. I mean he better not drop one catchable pass in a preseason game.

Wow, I can see why they would'nt want to advertise this, at least the Bucs are giving it some effort. I'm sorry I ever doubted them, way to go, Go Bucs!

OKay, put a tight leash on him (no pun indended) and let's see if he can stay on the straight and narrow. Perhaps in the right locker room he will have good influences and earn his money. If not boot him quick.
I say let's give him a chance to prove he wants to be a big time player and earn some big bucks. He could help us but we can't let his off feild issues HURT us. I think Gruden will know one way or the other pretty quickly. If he fits he will stick, if not he will want out fast.
GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

Well we can hope that he behaves himself, but he has a lot of unsolved situations that I don't think he has learned much from. Kind of like Packman. Attitude and character is meaningful in life and unfortunately in sports, especially football players, let their ego and friends alter their life.
I wish him luck and I would not give him not one break now that he is on the team. Show up on time, don't drink, and don't you dare drive! I hope they dangled a bonus at the end of the season if he behaves. We sure could use his talent if he himself wants to toe the line.

When the guys has played a full 16 games he got about 65 catches and 850-1000 yards. If he still has his speed I think he could be incredible with us. He did ok as #1 WR in SF...What could he do with the coverage rolled toward Galloway. This could be a nice fit for us. I hope he can at least find his way to be our #3 WR...maybe #2 and put Clayton in the slot where he can be more of a tight end. This gives us insurance in case Stovall can't find a way to be consistent. I'd rather have one of the truly great WRs but this is a good sigining for cheap. I think he made some bad decisions...but which one of us wouldn't try to take our Lamborghini over 100. Why else did you buy it?! The difference is he did it drunk. That's scary. I'm from Atlanta and I know how serious thiat is. See Danny Heatly from the ATL Thrashers. He killed his teamate driving recklessly. Baaaaad stuff. I generally don't respect people who have such disregard for others lives and of course their own. I hope he's learned his lesson. This is a huge second chance for him if he can pull things together. Get in shape man!

One more word of advice...put him in Dunn's room on away games. If we could cuff them together after practice...make Dunn drive him home...or make Bryant live in Dunn's basement. I think they must have planned this. Sign them on the same day so the media will focus on Dunn's character instead of Bryants. Nice planning by public relations guys.

Bryant will produce for tampa.they looked at this guy last season and im sure they have watched him grow in character over that time.the bucs are "taking a chance" on a very talented reciever who can help our team.not only does he hold the potential to be a help on offense,im sure he came at the right price.folks poo-pooed stevens pick up last year, but they changed their tune when he helped us win.i have hope that this kid has turned his life arround and so does the brass.nice pick up fellas-GO BUCS!!!!

I remember this dude coming out of the draft and the word on him was tremendous upside and there were concerns about his attitude not being cool. I hope he's changed the 'tude because Gruden, although not as much of a pure jerk as Nolan and Parcels, won't back down and tolerate anyone being cancerous to a team that has exceptional chemistry in the locker room.
Whatever happened to WR Quincy Morgan anyway? He was really dangerous in Cleveland and made tons of plays downfield. Good luck to Antonio and the only receivers that are better playmakers on the Bucs would be Galloway and Ike Hilliard. Hilliard finds seams and alleys in the zone coverages exceptionally well and Garcia seems to always be looking to get the rock to Hilliard and seems to have a comfort zone with him.
