Tampa Bay will reportedly re-sign defensive end Kevin Carter to a one-year contract this week. Carter, 34, was released by the Bucs on Feb. 27. He has notched 100 career sacks. Carter recorded three of those quarterback takedowns in his Buccaneer debut in 2007.
Tampa Bay defensive end Kevin Carter decided to remain a Buccaneer Monday, choosing to sign a one-year contract with the Bucs instead of inking a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, according to the St. Peterburg Times.
Carter, who turns 35 in September, was released by Tampa Bay on Feb. 27. He was scheduled to earn $3.8 million in base salary and have a team-high $5.8 million cap value in 2008. By releasing Carter and DE Greg Spires on the same day, the Bucs created $9.227 million in cap room.
The Bucs used some of that cap room to help improve their defensive line by signing free agent defensive ends Jimmy Wilkerson and Marques Douglas, who previously played for Kansas City and San Francisco, respectively.
Wilkerson and Douglas will compete with Carter, Gaines Adams, Greg White, Patrick Chukwurah, Charles Bennett and Marquies Gunn for playing time and/or roster spots this year.
A former first-round draft pick with the St. Louis Rams, Carter has recorded 100 career sacks and 770 tackles as a member of the Rams, Titans, Dolphins and Bucs. Last year, Carter notched three of Tampa Bay's 33 sacks and 73 tackles in 16 games (14 starts).

Bucs fans --- we just got a little better. Carter brings leadership, experience and class to that front four (or eight). Look no further than his decision to turn down more money and put his family and heart first. He will not "set the world on fire" in terms of stats but will bring a ton of intangibles and mentorship to a very young D-line. And with Coyer's penchant for rotating the lineman he can bring some size and experience to the interior of this defense. Props to Gruden and Allen.

Okay pewterreportjf, fine, I agree this signing helps a little bit; however, what comes from signing older DL comes a greater chance of injuries.
Regardlees, I am convinced that we should draft a pass rusher in Round 1 or 2.
Go Bucs

Horse, Carter is the one of the least-injured DL in the entire NFL. He rarely misses time, so that's not a concern.
I agree with Hwaii50 that this is a great move, for all the reasons he mentioned.
BUT I wonder if we saved any money by cutting and re-signing him. The article says the difference between his previously scheduled 2008 salary and cap value was $2 million, meaning cutting him allowed him to pocket that $2 mill. So we only save money if his one-year salary is less than the previously scheduled $3.8 million. I suppose it is.

PFT had a blurb yesterday about how the league has incentives for teams signing older players. I am sure at 35 Carter qualifies.

Class act, class guy, and a great day for the BUCS. I hope we treat this guy right in all ways in the future. Carter has experience, leadership, and can still help us in many ways, on and off the feild.
Good to see someone that wants to be here and has planned his money so he can do what HE feels is best for him and his family. Let's all remember there is life after FBall, and family should always come first.
GO BUCS!!!!! THANK YOU KEVIN
