The Buccaneers agreed to terms with free agent defensive back Eugene Wilson (New England) on Friday. The deal as a one-year contract. PewterReport.com has confirmed that Wilson will play cornerback in Tampa with the flexibility to also play safety as needed.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued to add players during free agency. On Friday, the team agreed to terms with former New England defensive back Eugene Wilson on a one-year deal worth $1.8 million, including $500,000 in guaranteed money, according to several published reports.

Wilson had visited One Buccaneer Place on March 2, just three days after the start of free agency and had drawn interest from other teams. The 27-year DB played safety for the Patriots and has notched 10 career interceptions since entering the NFL in 2003 as a second-round draft pick out of Illinois.

Despite his recent experience at safety, the Bucs plan on playing Wilson at cornerback, which was his natural position in college. In fact, that is the primary reason why he joined the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay has a need at that position due to the fact that long-time starter Brian Kelly bought out the final year of his contract and signed with Detroit, and the fact that Ronde Barber will turn 33 in April and Phillip Buchanon is in the final year of his contract.

"He's a natural to be cross-trained at both positions," Bucs secondary coach Raheem Morris told PewterReport.com. "He has experience at safety but he entered the league as a cornerback. We view his situation like T-Jack's from a year ago. We can play [Wilson] wherever we want, but we have a need at cornerback [with the departure of Kelly]. But when Kalvin Pearson left us, it also opened up a roster spot at safety. We like Wilson's versatility."

After missing just one game during the first three seasons of his career, Wilson has only started 10 games over the past two seasons due to injuries.

Tampa Bay also addressed the cornerback situation this offseason by re-signing dime back Sammy Davis to a one-year deal. The Bucs appear to be set at the safety position with Jermaine Phillips, Tanard Jackson, Sabby Piscitelli and Will Allen under contract in 2008.

i believe that the free agent signings of late have made the team better, i cried about missing out on briggs and stallworth, but after more thinking we didn't need briggs, with d.b. and june both being starting weaksides and maybe black be taught that posiyion as well, bryant is better a footballer than stallworth, just with a little more baggage but he has fire.the d-line is deeper, wilson is a proven winner and bryant adds speed and depth no. 20 best corner avaiable, 2nd d-lineman then use third pick on wideout, also some good news on caddy on pft he seems to be getting better but says he will probably start on pup and he knows this which means he will be able to deal with it and comeback fully recovered

This is good news. I had hoped he would have signed a two year deal not a one year deal, but it does give us a year to give our No1 or No2 CB Pick time to learn.
Go Bucs

Great move. Now lets go get DJ Hackett and solidify a productive free agency. If we don't sign Hackett he is going to Caolina. I wouldn't want to see him teamed up with Smith.

Excellent move. I think so far we have done very well in our pick ups and STILL have money to take care of some of out own guys and have a good draft.

Let's get DJ looked in and that will be a help as well.

You know all these guys may not work out, but we seem to have amassed a large number of guys. Seems we have been as active or more so than most. Nice to have CAP room to work with.

GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good move with Wilson......while obviously creating tremendous depth on all fronts, I think what we are quitely doing is stockpiling the makings of what is shaping up to be a very, very good special teams unit. Sabby, E. Wilson, Lehman, LB's McCoy, Joe and Neece etc. Think about it...all of these guys can fly, they can tackle and as of right now are probably back ups !!

I believe that these last few signings has allowed us to pick the best available player in this upcoming draft. Great job Bruce...Go Bucs.
