The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are interested in trading for Kansas City Chiefs Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen, who could visit One Buc Place sometime next week, according to an NFL source. Bucs G.M. Bruce Allen has made a few trades with the Chiefs over the last year.

Which player will be Tampa Bay's first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft?

Well, the Buccaneers might not have a first-round pick if talks with the Kansas City Chiefs regarding a possible trade that would send Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to Tampa Bay come to fruition.

An NFL source confirmed Fox Sports' report from earlier in the day that Tampa Bay and Minnesota have talked with Kansas City about trading for Allen, who was franchised by the Chiefs earlier in the offseason.

PewterReport.com has learned that Allen, 26, could visit Minnesota within the next few days and could visit with Tampa Bay sometime next week before the 2008 NFL Draft is held on April 26-27.

Ironically, it was nearly one year ago that Tampa Bay brought in New Orleans franchised defensive end Charles Grant for a visit before he eventually signed a seven-year contract extension with the Saints.

Tampa Bay has expressed serious interest in improving its pass rush from last season when the Bucs defense, which ranked No. 2 overall, recorded 33 sacks.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Allen certainly could help address that need as he has notched 43 career sacks in four seasons since entering the league as a fourth-round draft pick out of Idaho State in 2004. He led the league in sacks last season with a career-high 15.5 quarterback takedowns en route to making the Pro Bowl.

At least two things must be addressed before a trade for Allen can be executed by either the Vikings or Buccaneers.

Either team must agree to compensation that likely will include sending at least a first-round draft pick to the Chiefs and possibly a later-round pick and/or player(s).

"It's a situation that works out best for both sides," Allen told Fox Sports. "I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable picks to rebuild with."

Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen has plenty of experience negotiating trades with Kansas City president Carl Peterson. The Bucs traded for former Chiefs running back Michael Bennett and defensive tackle Ryan Sims last year and signed former Chiefs defensive lineman Jimmy Wilkerson this offseason.

A long-term, lucrative contract would also have to be worked out between Allen and the team that trades for him.

Tampa Bay, which has the 20th overall pick in the first round, has approximately $25 million in cap room and isn't afraid to dish out a significant amount of money to address a need, evidenced by the fact that the Bucs made Jeff Faine the highest-paid center in the NFL earlier this offseason with a six-year, $37.5 million contract.

Minnesota, which owns the 17th overall pick in the draft, is currently $14 million under the salary cap.

Jared Allen could be looking to become the highest-paid defensive end in the NFL, which would mean he'd need to receive a contract that rivals or exceeds the six-year, $72 million deal Colts DE Dwight Freeney received during the 2007 offseason.

What kind of cap space does Minny have ?

Currently How much cap space does the Vikings have. I can't find it anywhere on the net.

I'm shocked if they do this! That's alot of money for a DE, even if he had the best year last year. In my eyes, that's last year...Just seems like so much to give up when their is so much talent in this draft..

If they do this that must really mean they are thinking they are close to a SuperBowl...I thought if you were Franchised, you must give up two first round picks? No?

That would mean round 1 this year and round 1 of 09. Maybe I'm wrong...If we only have five picks, and then look at giving up 2 this season (if I'm wrong about sending two 1st rounders) that will leave us with three picks in this Draft...I dunno.

You guys are wasting your time, the Vikings have enough to sign him all day long...Don't worry.

Here's what I got.....

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have offered their first-round and fifth-round draft picks in next year's NFL Draft to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for DL Jared Allen. The proposed deal could also include Buccaneers DL Jovan Haye, according to ESPN's Michael Smith.

For the Vikings

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Minnesota Vikings are considering offering their first-round pick and second-round pick in next year's NFL Draft to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for DL Jared Allen, according to sources.

Ok. So it's two futures..It would not affect our picks this season. We'd still have 5. I'm still on the border with this deal. I have a few chiefs fans and they say he's either hot or cold. No real consistency from Allen. That may be a bad analogy, I really don't know, b/c I don't watch many Chiefs games.

What do some of you think?

For an elite DE that would be a steal. I don't think Chad Johnson would be worth trading a 1st for, but elite DEs are becoming very hard to come by.

I think this would be a good thing, but I don't like trading next years picks. That's dangerous, but maybewe could give up our No1 this year to somebody for this year 3rd and 4th and their 1st next year.?
Who knows anyway.
I have been saying this over and over; we need a pass rush and that alone helps the offense. I bet this deal is going to happen. I just don't know what we will actually give up.
Greatest needs for now: DL
Greatest need in 2009/2010: QB
GM Allen can make this happen and we get the best of it.
Go Bucs

Not a bad idea. The Giants won a Super Bowl Champioship with a Dline the harassed the QB all day long. Maybe instead of a Fifth from next years draft, the Bucs can send them Chris Sims.
I am a little nevrous about sending future draft picks though, esprcially a first rounder. As long as the Bucs don't use up their cap space, it's probably fine. Any lack of picks can be made up in free agency.

I say make the trade if it's next yr's 1st and 5th, then trade back in this yr's draft and pick up another teams 1st rounder. The team the Bucs trade with may have a better pick than the Bucs anyway. So it's like trading up in next yr's draft

5:33pm, April 17, 2008

bucfan47

haha..well that's just it DLS5492...Here's the problem...If we trade for Allen and let's just say the deal goes down just as stated...We give up next years 1st round and 3rd round draft picks and Jovan Haye...On top of that, Allen must be signed after next season and will probably demand somewhere close to Dwight Freeney money...Freeney's contract was 6 yrs. for 72 million. I just personally think that's alot of money to give up when that money can be spent via draft. I'm not saying I'm against this, just pointing out that we would be dedicating a big portion of our salary cap space....

bucfan47

destinedbuc - That's hilarious...Just go back and re-read what you wrote above. Don't we all wish is were that easy to acquire 1st round draft picks? You've got to have someone to offer in a trade for a 1st round pick...No team will just hand you one for free...haha

If the Bucs do this deal, then I am sure there will be another deal to follow. Bruce Allen has more than sold me on his trading skills. He got Joey Galloway for Keyshawn and He got draft picks for a washed up Keenan McCardell and Roben Oben,

I just think there will be more wheeling and dealing if the Bucs pull off this deal. I can't belive J. Allen was a 4th round pick! Talk about catching lightning in a bottle!!

bucsince76

Makes since to me.Remember, defense wins championships. I agree that we need a QB for the future but I don't see it happening while Gruden is here. But hey, what do we know ?
Alot can happen between now and 4/26. Go Bucs!

It is also a lot of money to spend for someone who seems to stay in trouble off the field. We have a lot of great players and the last thing they need is a player that can't stay out of trouble. Yes there is a need but at what other cost besides money?

11:15pm, April 17, 2008

Jim Flynn,

Can you please address the contract of Jared Allen? To my understanding, the only way for Tampa to acquire the rights to Jared Allen is A). They must reach a contract agreement with his agent and B). They must give the Kansas City Chiefs "TWO" future first round draft picks due to him being a franchise player.

I'll almost sure I'm right on this, but can you confirm? John Clayton of ESPN reported yesterday that Tampa offered a 1st and 5th round pick and Minnesota offered 1st and 2nd round picks for his services. I'm confused as to how this can be possible?

6:01am, April 18, 2008

docbravo

I'm almost certain that KC and remove the Franchise Tag from him if they come to an agreement with a team that wants his services. I think him being Tagged is just a formality, and the Chiefs will do what they can to move him. I can't see the Bucs giving up 2 1st round picks, especially after hearing J. Gruden Whine and Complain about not being able to draft in the first round after he got here from Oakland. I just can't see that gettig done.

I'm still concerned about J. Allens Character Issues too. The City of Tampa has a lot of "Distractions" for a guy that owns a Club called "Club 69!" Kinda Risky in my opinion! He's not Pacman Jones, but he's no Warrick Dunn Either!!!

6:50am, April 18, 2008

Next years 1st and 5th would make this a steal. If we finish as expected this year, our number 1 pick next year will be in the mid to lower twenties. Allen requires a double team - what would that do for Gaines Adams ? I would rather the Bucs give up Simms and maybe a different DL man other than Haye.

7:02am, April 18, 2008

orlandobucsfan

So if we were to trade Jovan Haye or any other DT, who do you guys think would play definsive tackle...you thinkin' of bringin' in Bugger or gettin' Sapp out of retirement??? Losing a starting tackle and having about fifteen defensive ends doesn't sound appetizing to me. I say the same about Jared Allen as Ocho Cinco...not worth it.
