Sources tell PewterReport.com that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not interested in signing former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, who was released due to his off-the-field issues but reportedly has a tryout scheduled with an NFL team.
Contrary to what at least one published report has suggested, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not interested in former Cincinnati wide receiver Chris Henry.
According to a blog entry made on the Tampa Tribune's website on Tuesday, Henry, who has been suspended twice by the NFL for drug and alcohol-related incidents and was recently released by the Bengals after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting another man, was given permission by a judge in Cincinnati to travel to another city to tryout for another NFL team.
That team has not yet been identified, but the Tribune's blog entry speculated that it could be the Buccaneers, who have previously signed players with troubled pasts, including defensive tackle Darrell Russell and wide receivers David Boston and Antonio Bryant.
A former third-round draft pick, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Henry has caught 88 passes for 1,370 yards (15.6 avg.) and 17 touchdowns during his three-year career.
While his off-the-field trouble has been well documented, Henry certainly has been productive on it. However, sources tell PewterReport.com that the Buccaneers are not interested in working out - or signing -- Henry.
The Buccaneers currently have 14 receivers on their offseason roster, including Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall, Dexter Jackson, Paris Warren and Antonio Bryant, among others.

We don't need any more "last stop players with substance abuse problems". . Substance abuse is the No. 1 enemy in our country. We need to send a message to all, especially sports figures, that it will not be tolerated. It is the downfall of our society and more and more young people are getting hooked in. The drug world is a very big organized business that effects all levels of our society. It's much bigger than the oil industry. Yeah, do the numbers. The effects is huge.

We could sign him for almost nothing, and he produces. If anything bring him in to heat up the WR competition.Every reciever should EARN his position in the offense.Whats wrong with more competition??Also, there is less chance for getting into trouble in Tampa than in Cinci....I dont know if we are at a point as a team to overlook an experienced, productive reciever-even if he's been a pain in the ass..Remember-he plays in Cinci, can you blame the guy ?!

cremdonado, sorry but I disagree . Tampa has just as big, if not bigger, drug problem than Cinci. The Commissioner understands it and has been trying to send the message to all the teams. Character has always played a major role in sports, but some ignored it because of the talent pool had so many character flawed individuals.
Go Bucs

IMO, this guy already had his last chance, when Cincy kept him on their roster despite his 8-game-suspension in 2007. Any contract he might get now will be just some extra cash in his pocket when he eventually gets the final boot from the league.

With the league planning to penalize teams for players off-the-field behavior, it's no where near worth signing him. I'd rather not lose draft picks.
