Tampa Bay settled its grievance with retired QB Jake Plummer. The Bucs and the Broncos filed joint grievances vs. Plummer. The agreement is now a done deal.
The Buccaneers have settled their grievance with retired quarterback Jake Plummer. While the offical numbers were not released, the agreement was believed to be for $3.5 million, which was half of the $7 million worth of bonus money Plummer received when he signed his contract.
"We have entered into an agreement with Jake Plummer stemming from his decision to not play football last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," said Buccaneers General Manager Bruce Allen in a statement on Buccaneers.com.
"The agreement includes a repayment to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of a previously-paid signing bonus to Jake Plummer and additional economic consideration to the Buccaneers in the event Jake Plummer decides to resume his professional football career," said Allen.
The Buccaneers continue to have the rights to Plummer's services if he decides to come out of retirement and return to the NFL. The grievance hearing was scheduled to occur in New York on Wednesday. The ruling was scheduled to be made by an arbitrator. Plummer's contract ran through the 2010 season.
Early into free agency in 2007, the Buccaneers traded a seventh-round pick for the rights to Plummer. Tampa Bay tried to lure Plummer out of retirement several times, but to no avail. Bucs head coach Jon Gruden and Allen went as far as flying to Idaho to meet with Plummer last summer, but the quarterback couldn't be convinced to play football again.
In his four-year career with the Broncos, Plummer posted a 39-15 regular-season record, for a .722 winning percentage.
Plummer retired after completing 57.1 percent of his career passes for 29,253 yards and tossed 131 touchdowns and 131 interceptions. Plummer entered the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals in 1997 and then signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent.
The Bucs currently have five quarterbacks - Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Chris Simms, Josh Johnson - on their roster.

Garcia's already signed! Don't give Mr. "I'm all about the money" Garcia an extension or raise until he's fulfilled his contract. A bonus or LTBE extension if we feel guilty about sitting him down the stretch last year, but that's it!

This settlement still means nothing for the football team.
I'm glad he didn't report a year ago. Good luck jake and I mean that in a nice way.

drt1066 honestly what the hell did garcia do for us to deserve more money? he threw 13 td's sure only 4 int's but only 13 td's and it wasnt garcia that won us all those games it was the defense and the running game not garcia what makes him so worthy? not to mention the guy is really old and wont play that much longer and i think its time for McCown to come in and be our QB garcia wants to cry about more money so that probably means he dont give a crap about the team only himself and how much money he makes forget him

Actually it does mean something: We gave up a seventh round draft pick for 3.5 million extra in salary cap room in 2009. That's some nice change to have in either scenario ( capped or uncapped 2009)
Risk vs. reward: If Jake shows up he competes for the number one spot with Garcia. That leaves a pretty good back up (not meant to be a knock on Luke Mcown) on the bench in case of injury. With Jake at the helm after Garcia goes down we still would have looked pretty good.
Jake chooses not to show up we give up a seventh rounder and add salary cap room in 2009.
That is just good business !

I thought this money just went to the Glazer's pockets, not to the salary cap.

"Also, the Bucs confirmed today what we told you some time ago: The team will in fact receive a 2009 salary-cap credit for the amount recovered, in this case, $3.5-million. "
This quote from a local paper. It was a no risk, high gain proposition for the Bucs from the outset. Like I said:
Just good business.
