As the Buccaneers began reporting for training camp, the organization continued to get their rookies under contract. On Friday, Tampa Bay agreed to terms on a contract with fifth-round pick Josh Johnson. The rookie quarterback should see a lot of reps in training camp and the preseason.

In other news, Bucs rookie RB Cory Boyd (knee) did not pass his physical and will be waived injured or placed on IR.

Johnson played collegiately at San Diego and was the 160th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound signal caller started 10 games as a senior and passed for 2,988 yards, completing 68.4 percent of his attempts for 43 touchdowns and just one interception. Johnson also rushed for 726 yards, and averaged 7.2 yards per rush.

Prior to the draft, Johnson wowed scouts at the East-West Shrine Game and was named offensive MVP of that contest. Johnson timed a 4.4 40-yard dash in pre-draft workouts, and illustrated the athletic ability that made him a successful scrambling quarterback in college. The Buccaneers had coaching connections to Johnson, and get an honest assessment.

Johnson played in a West Coast offense in college under coaches John Harbaugh and Jonnie Morten. Those coaches are familiar to Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen and head coach Jon Gruden. Morten was on Gruden’s staff in Oakland, and Harbaugh was on the Raiders’ coaching staff coaching under Allen in 2003.

In his collegiate career, Johnson started 34 of the 41 games he appeared in, and had a 30-4 record as a starter. The 22 year-old Johnson, posted 176.68 passing efficiency rating. Johnson owns many records in San Diego football history. He has the most touchdown passes (113), completions (724), attempts (1,065), and passing yards (9,699). In addition, Johnson ran for 1,984 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The four quarterbacks competing with Johnson will be starter Jeff Garcia, and backups Luke McCown, Brian Griese and Chris Simms.

This should be interesting. So was Johnson contrat more protective than Moore's or Zuttach's? I bet it was. Johnson will go on the Pratice Squad, and beacuse of his salary, no one will touch him. Why? He is a project for at least two years and the Bucs just bought a year.
Good Job!

Why are you so worried about Zuttah's contract? There is a difference is pay between ever position on a football team. Some positions make more and some make less. It is not always just about what round you were picked in. I am sure that Zuttah is happy with his contract and will have no problem feeding his family.

The fact that BA found a loophole that should allow the team to place Johnson on the PS this season should be looked at as a good thing. Maybe unless you are Chris Simms.
