The Packers and quarterback Brett Favre have reached an impasse less than 24 hours after the future Hall of Famer arrived in Green Bay for training camp, and Tampa Bay is one of the possible resolutions in sight.

Favre, 38, reportedly has met with Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson over the past 24 hours. Favre's first meeting was with McCarthy, who informed Favre that there would be no open competition for the starting quarterback job, which remains Aaron Rodgers' gig.

According to ESPN, Favre's meeting with Thompson took place on Tuesday morning, and both sides discussed trade possibilities after Favre acknowledged that the best thing for Favre and the Packers was to part ways.

"Mike [McCarthy] told me, hey, we're a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition," Favre told ESPN. "I don't have a problem with competing -- you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he's been out here all this time. This is more than about an open competition and I can do that, absolutely, but this is going to be mass confusion and that's not good for this team.

"I'll practice my butt off, if it comes to that, and I think we all know what the end result will be, but this probably isn't going to work. And I truly understand that if I was in Mike's shoes, I'd see it basically the same way he sees it, I'm sure. And I think if he was in my shoes, he'd see it my way. I think we both agree on that.

"They want to know if I'm committed but I want to know if they're 100 percent committed. The problem is that there's been a lot of damage done and I can't forget it. Stuff has been said, stories planted, that just aren't true. Can I get over all that? I doubt it."

The Packers have already given the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets permission to talk to Favre, but Favre, who announced his retirement in March before being reinstated on Sunday, appeared to be set on remaining with Green Bay or playing for another NFC North team, like the Minnesota Vikings.

However, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Tuesday evening that Favre has grown receptive to the idea of being traded to the Buccaneers and could speak to Tampa Bay as early as today.

Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden worked with Favre in 1992 as an offensive assistant and from 1993-94 as the Green Bay's wide receivers coach.

Bucs general manager Bruce Allen was mysteriously absent from both of Tampa Bay's training camp practices on Tuesday. Bucs officials told PewterReport.com that Allen had a previous engagement that required him to travel out of the Orlando area.

Team officials also said that Allen was not in Green Bay and his travel arrangements had nothing to do with Favre.

A three-time league MVP and Super Bowl winner, Favre has completed 61.4 percent of his career passes for 61,655 yards and thrown 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions.

Favre completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 4,155 yards and tossed 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions en route to leading the Packers to the NFC Championship Game and making the Pro Bowl in 2007.

Tampa Bay currently has five quarterbacks on its roster - Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Brian Griese, Chris Simms and Josh Johnson.

Garcia, 38, has missed five straight days of practices with a calf injury. Neither he nor Brian Griese were on the practice field for Tuesday afternoon's workout, which involved a lot of scout team work and allowed Simms and Johnson to take the majority of the reps at practice.
