The Bucs defeated the Dolphins in Miami on Saturday, 17-6. What did Bucs head coach Jon Gruden and some of his players have to say after his team's preseason opener? Find out by reading this article.
Bucs head coach Jon Gruden on Tampa Bay's first half vs. Miami:
"Brian Griese has had a great camp. He did one heck of a job in the two-minute drill. It got a little hairy there because we wasted a timeout, but we still got the ball in the end zone. That was a great way to end the half. We should have gotten more out of those drives, obviously missing a field goal and missing a couple of opportunities early."
Gruden on the offensive line's performance vs. he Dolphins:
"They played very well. It's good, clean football. No penalties and no turnovers. It's a real credit to the players and coaches. It's solid execution. We just have to catch the ball a little better and make some more plays."
Gruden on CB Ronde Barber's sack and rookie CB Aqib Talib's pass defense in one-on-one coverage:
"Yeah, and [safety] Jermaine Phillips had a big lick early. The guys were ready to play a game tonight."
Bucs QB Luke McCown on the offense's performance:
"I think we did a good job. There were a lot of things going on. We faced a 3-4 defense. We've got some teams on our schedule that are real good at playing the 3-4. We had a decent start tonight. We'll go back and look at the tape and go from there."
McCown on rookie QB Josh Johnson making his pro debut and leading the offense on a scoring drive on his first series of the game:
"That's really good for Josh. That will get his confidence up. He's going to be a good player. He wants to be great and he's working at it."
McCown on facing his older brother Josh, who plays for the Dolphins but was not in the game at the same time as Luke:
"I tried to cut his finger earlier this spring (laughing). I guess the Dolphins have some younger guys they wanted to take a look at, so Josh didn't get to play a whole bunch."
Bucs CB Ronde Barber on sacking Dolphins CB John Beck in the first half:
"Monte [Kiffin] has been getting really creative with the blitz packages here, just building on some of the things we've done in the past. That blitz was actually blocked up, but I just beat my guy to get the sack. It doesn't count because it's preseason, but we're getting a chance to compete and that's what we did tonight."
Barber on how the first-team defense fared vs. the Dolphins:
"It felt good to get our hands on somebody else. We've had months of facing each other in OTA's and training camp, so it was nice to go up against another jersey. I think we played hard. The last coaching point we received was, ‘If you're not going to do something right, at least play fast and hard.'"
Barber on rookie CB Aqib Talib making his debut:
"He's got some skills and he'll be a good addition to our team. We're expecting him to play, man, and I think he'll do fine."
Barber on S Jermaine Phillips' hit in the first half:
"Flip has been dying to get a hit on somebody. This stuff we do in practice is nothing like the real deal, and he finally got his opportunity. We expect our safeties to be that physical, and all of them are going to bring it this year."
Barber on the offense dominating the time of possession vs. the Dolphins:
"That absolutely helps the defense. That's something that helped us a lot last year. They're competing hard just like we are, and the better they play the better our team will play this year."
Bucs S Sabby Piscitelli on playing in front of a lot of his family members in Dolphins Stadium on Saturday night.
"It was fun to play in front of my family and get their love and support. I was just trying to run around and make some plays."
Piscitelli on returning to action after finishing the season on injured reserve in 2007:
"It meant everything. It was a long, long year. It felt great to be out here. I couldn't stop smiling in pre-game just getting ready for the game. I just wanted to get in the flow of things and knock some rust off. I felt pretty good, though."
