Bucs Re-Sign DE Chukwurah

On the day that the Buccaneers traded DE Marques Douglas to Baltimore, PewterReport.com is reporting that Tampa Bay re-signed DE Patrick Chukwurah, who was signed as a free agent in 2007 and released prior to the start of the 2008 training camp.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have released the wrong defensive end prior to the start of training camp. On the same day that the team traded Marques Douglas, who was signed to a four-year contract by the Bucs on March 13, to Baltimore, PewterReport.com is reporting that Tampa Bay filled the roster spot with defensive end Patrick Chukwurah. Chukwurah was signed to a one-year deal.

Chukwurah was released prior to the start of training camp on June 19, just one year into a five-year, $5 million deal, in part because the team had acquired Douglas and fellow defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson in the offseason. But Douglas, who came from San Francisco and had played for Baltimore before, lacked the necessary quickness to play in the Tampa 2 defense and proved to be a much better fit in a 3-4 defense.

Chukwurah was at Wednesday’s walk-through at One Buccaneer Place and is expected to suit up and play on Thursday night at Houston in Tampa Bay’s preseason finale.

Chukwurah’s 2007 season was derailed due to a preseason knee injury and a shoulder injury that limited him to participating in just nine games where he recorded 12 tackles, one sack and forced one fumble. The 6-foot-1, 250-pounder has recorded 81 total tackles and nine sacks as mostly a reserve player in his seven years in the NFL. He is also considered a top special teams performer.

The Nigerian-born defender was the first free agent Tampa Bay signed in 2007. He played in Denver under then-defensive coordinator Larry Coyer, who is now Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach, from 2003-06. Chukwurah was drafted by Minnesota in the fifth round in 2001.

The chuk is back !!Hopefully he can stay healthy this time around.

Bruce- you sly dog !!! Trading a guy we were likely to cut and replacing him with a guy who knows our system.I hope this season is a good one for Pat.

How about Boldin(yes im a broken record, yes im a broken record, yes im a broken record!)Adding this guy would even make Greasy's long ball dangerous(greasy may be able to toss it-just dont know about how accurate ).

Shrewd series of moves by Bruce to trade a guy that was probably going to get cut, fill his spot with a guy who knows our system well and get two draft picks in the process. Every year he continues to prove his worth as GM and how he was clearly an improvement over McKay.

I agree, go get Boldin.

Chuk = most average player to ever play D for Bucs. He's servicable and the draft picks are key, but I see nothing to get excited about here.

Why sign him? He's going to be gone shortly. I don't see this at all. Just leave the spot open. They'll be someone else from another team released that might be a surprise in the next few days and we could scoop him up before anyone else. If not, he'll be gone on this Sunday cut.
By the way, why is Simms still on the team? If Simms was ready to play he would have shown something this summer and this pre season.
What happen to Defensive Lineman Coleman? He still can't pass a physical?
Go Bucs

Jesus again with the Boldin talk...YES everyone would like a top flight reciever, but not for the crazy garbage dondo has been talking (simms/clayton)!?!?!?!?! Teams aren't stupid, and the NFL ain't your MADDEN 09' game. Boldin will command a 1st rounder or possibly more, so at least talk wisely about wanting to get him. I personally don't see us giving a 1st up, not while Bryant has really stepped up and give our Rookie at least a season before labeling him anything. I'm all about trade talk or rumor but lets keep it in perspective

sabotage - Would you give up a first rounder for Boldin? I would if I had an acceptable pretrade contract set-up.

Sabotage-one thing to consider :
Look at Gruden's first round picks since arriving in Tampa. How many are playing right now ?Clayton is on a produce or be traded bubble, and Joseph and caddy are out of comission currently-Thats his first round luck(monte's gaines and talib are ready to go! ).
Now thinking of grudens first round luck, isn't Boldin worth a first round pick?He is a proven player, which is more than can be said of any of the other players listed(joseph is a known underachiever and caddy wasnt his rookie self when he got hurt, and may never be).
Now does it sound so crazy ?with a Boldin on board our pick would be late in the round, making this an even sweeter deal...

Late in the round providing we make the playoffs again, still a great value.

This isn't fantasy football. Why you feel the need to post about how we should trade for Boldin every piece is getting old..
