Bucs Release CB Wilson |

The Buccaneers cut cornerback Eugene Wilson on Sunday (Cliff Welch) |
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not done shaping their 53-man roster. The Buccaneers have cut veteran cornerback Eugene Wilson. Wilson was not among the Buccaneers cuts to get the roster down to the 53-man limit.
After playing safety for the New England Patriots for five seasons, Wilson entered free agency and the Buccaneers pursued him to play cornerback for Tampa Bay. Wilson signed with the Bucs on March 17. Rookie first-round pick Aqib Talib beat out Wilson for the nickel cornerback spot, but Wilson appeared to be the fourth cornerback on the depth chart ahead of rookie Elbert Mack.
Wilson had some big seasons for the Patriots. In 2003 as a rookie, Wilson started 15 games at safety with 66 tackles and four interceptions. Wilson helped the Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVIII. Then in his sophomore campaign, Wilson again was starting at safety for the Patriots and helping them to repeat as Super Bowl champions. In 2004, Wilson virtually duplicated his rookie year numbers when he recorded 67 tackles and four interceptions while starting 14 games.
In Wilson's third NFL season, he started all 16 games and led the Patriots secondary with 65 tackles, and chipped in one interception. New England lost in the playoffs that season to Denver after beating Jacksonville in the Wild Card round. After his third season, Wilson's career hit some rough patches as he was injured in 2006 and started four games before being placed on injured reserve. Last year, Wilson started six games and appeared in 11 contests for the Patriots. Wilson was a backup for the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl.

Wise move; now if we can find a younger WR and cut one of the older ones. I still haven't figured it out yet why we are carrying 4 QB's. Johnson is there for the future, but why keep the other three. Surely we have some confidence in our starter and backup?

Moving Wilson out says a lot about Elbert Mack. Monte and Raheem must really like this young corner and they never miss on talent. We may be witnessing the replacement for Ronde in a couple of years right here with E Mack.

Horse: We need to kep McCown and Griese. Yes, Johnson is for the future. But you and I both know Garcia won't last the whole 16 games. We both know the Bucs have been hit in the past with injuries to QBs. In the past, we had to rely on Gratkowski. If and when Garcia goes down, the Bucs will go to Griese. If he goes down, they go to McCown. I think the Bucs feel they can keep going without missing a beat with any of these QBs.

Hey SUMOSAM: So what I think is more significant about the cut of E. Wilson is not how high they are on E. Mack (though it is significant) more it is how high they probably are on Tanard Jackson playing at the CB position. TJ is a ballhawk and his experience at CB in college more than likely made Wilson expendable. That is one of the reasons why E. Wilson was so intriguing to the bucs in free agency. E. Wilson was unable to make enough splash plays to show his play would transfer well to the safety position. The bucs also want Sabby P. to get on the field more. So this move will only increase his play on the field. So my sources tell me................lol signing off from GA. its the pewterswashbuckler Go BUCS

Yah, I liked the move when we signed him, but he's been outplayed straight up by EMack.
We better have a top ten running game this year with all the attention to OL the last several seasons.

The future is now and Johnson isn't a Tom Brady in the making. He's a tad bit better than Shawn King and his future in the game is at least 4 years down the road. Stash him on the PS but don't jeapodize your team waiting for him to possible develope. He's a 7th rounder.... In a few weeks, once the rosters are locked....he find his way to the practice squad.

The funniest thing about our team is that we have a starting QB that nobody thinks will make it thru the season..I say why keep him-he wont last the season, and he wont be here next year.
We need the strongest player at every position to increase the chance for a win right? Then why are we so happy to have Garcia starting when its thought he wont make the season? How many games are we going to loose at his hands before its too much?He is by far the biggest question mark on the team in my opinion. He was vacant from camp and pre season and injured the entire time, yet we expect him to slip on in and return to his past form...What are you all smoking??
I'll try to be positive and think he will show up rust free though its hard not to be realistic...
This is for sure-We will be underwealmed by any of our QBs.Each has their strength and each their blaring flaws-its all a crap shoot...
