The Bucs traded for Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Sean Mahan on Tuesday. Mahan played for Tampa Bay from 2003-06. In order to make room for Mahan on their roster, the Bucs traded offensive lineman Dan Buenning to the Chicago Bears.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, acquiring Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Sean Mahan and trading offensive lineman Dan Buenning to the Chicago Bears.

Terms of the two trades were not immediately available, although the Bucs did receive an undisclosed draft pick in exchange for Buenning.

Mahan, 28, played for the Buccaneers from 2003-06. He originally entered the NFL in 2003 as a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-3, 301-pound Mahan signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent during the 2007 offseason. Mahan is scheduled to earn $3.175 million in base salary in 2008. He is under contract through the 2011 season.

Mahan started all 16 regular season games for the Steelers in ‘07. Mahan, who can play center and guard, has started 52 of the 73 career games he's played in.

Like Mahan, Buenning (6-4, 320) is considered a versatile offensive lineman. He started 23 of the 26 games he played in for the Bucs at left guard. However, a torn ACL sidelined the 2005 fourth-round draft pick for most of 2006 and 2007. The Bucs began playing Buenning at center last year.

While both players are considered versatile offensive lineman, Mahan is more experienced at right guard than Buenning. Tampa Bay's decision to trade for Mahan stems from the broken foot starting right guard Davin Joseph suffered during the preseason.

Joseph could be sidelined for several more weeks while he recovers from foot surgery. Rookie Jeremy Zuttah, who spent training camp and preseason at center and guard, likely will start in Joseph's place in the regular season opener in New Orleans on Sunday.

Very disappointed with this trade. I thought Buenning held up much better than Mahan did when they played and they both play guard/center. The fact that Mahan has more experience at RG doesn't justify it for me when we have Zuttah already.

Are you kidding me ?! correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mahan considered a "disappointment" by this website and the team ?!
I swear I've seen him along side the names of Nimmo and Zem-whoever as players the Bucs were not high on..I guess he knows the team and blah,blah,blah...
I guess welcome back Mahan, hope you are better than when you left.
Dan-we hardly got a chance to see what you can do....
Good luck to both of you, hope this works out for the old Bucs...

don't forget he was the steelers bset OL, maybe it took him awhile to turn into a good Lineman. Plus back when he played the Bucs O-Line they were all bad (03-06)

Bruce Allen must have an "Ace in the Hole" - what's going on here?? The BUCS must have some inside info on Buenning's knee injury - why pick up "swinning gate Mahan". The Steelers had this guy on the trade or cut short list, what are the BUCS plans here??? Our QB Griese should fear for his protection as Mahan was the reason he got hurt in the Miami game - remember BUC FANS??? This move needs further explaination.....what in the world is this move???

Lost a bigger stronger (320 now 301) lineman. He was too small last time. Maybe he's bigger in the mind of the coach.

I am speaking from a fans point of view, unlike those posted ahead of me who have obviously watched lots of tape and evaluated these two guys for hours. It seems to me the Bucs went up one round in next years draft, making our 7th round pick a 6th round pick all for the simple cost of trading one back-up for another back-up. Both with pretty similar ability. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

WTF??!! Seriously, what the sweet merciful tap-dancin' F is going on in B. Allen's head? I'm actually a fan of B. Allen and Gruden but is this is the dumbest move Allen has made in years.

I don't know what's worse, losing Buenning or gaining Mahan. Buenning was as good of a run blocker we had when healthy. I forgot what the exact numbers were, but if you average the games between 2005-2006 every game where Buenning was healthy we averaged well over 110 yds rushing a game. Whenever he was hurt we averaged under 90 and that includes games where Caddy was playing hurt. If we didn't get a least a 4th rounder for him we got screwed; personally I think he's worth a 3rd rounder.

We reached for D. Joseph in the 1st round because of how bad S. Mahan was/is. He's barely strong enough to play center, let alone right guard where he's often isolated on the opposing teams most athletic DT. His never ending string of 10 yard holding penalties are drive killers! The only thing he does well is pull when he can use his athletism to neutralize a weaker LB or something. Overall it's a total downgrade; the Steelers should give us a 7th rounder for taking someone that lousy off their hands at that cap price.

In short....DAMMIT!!

None of you all have all the facts concerning the situation. Until then, you need to reserve judgement on this. It disappoints me that you all immedietly jump to the negative when you don't understand a situation. Take a breath, calm down! Believe it or not, the Bucs and Bruce Allen know what they are doing. I am glad he is the G.M. and not any of you.
Go Bucs!!!!

You think you know what's going on with your team, but we don't know. It sounds like a bad move to me. Guess I'm wrong, I haven't spent any time comparing film, or coaching these guys, course I have know clue what this might do to the cap. Just when you think you might know, you find out you don't know. Go Bucs!

I simply don't understand these moves!

Bucnaked, these are NOT players of similar ability!

Yes, Mahan has more experience playing rg, but that means NOTHING. He was a TERRIBLE rg, and as said above, we used a 1st round pick for Joseph BECAUSE MAHAN WAS SOOOOO BAD!!

Buenning, played rg this preseason, and I watched him very carefully. He played very well, and is a VERY good, strong run blocker, and a much better pass blocker than Mahan.

I am a believer in BA, but I think these two moves were brain farts of the SOB magnitude!!!!

Wow !! There's alot of "panic and jumpin of the cliff" here. Please people - don't commit "sepuka." Mahan started for a pretty good O-Line in Pittsburg. He is a natural center not converted like Buenning. I am a Buenning fan but he is still a raw center and Mahan is just as competent as a back up. This will prove to be a pretty shrewd move should Mahan be forced into playing center or guard

If things stay staus quo ( Zuttah stays healthy until Davin returns) all will be well.

7:28pm, September 2, 2008

TD_Johnny

This is a move to improve the backup center position, not the backup guard. Buenning had a difficult time transitioning to center, and Mahan actually played fairly well when John Wade got injured. This frees up Zuttah to concentrate on the guard positions with Lee and Davis behind him.

7:47pm, September 2, 2008

nutmeg7

Wha?

But... W... Wha?

WTF???

I guess... Maybe...? What, are they just gonna cut him when Davin gets back? Leave Zuttah as the only backup there maybe? I don't think I understand...

P.S. @ hwaii50: I think you meant "seppuku"?

7:51pm, September 2, 2008

FireDaCannons

Truth is, keeping the number of QBs we did, O line should only be carrying 8 people. Davis can play LG and LT, Lee is listed as RT, Zuttah can play, well, everything...
When Davin comes back, the Bucs may well drop the worst O-lineman to get depth somewhere else that the inevitable injury bug strikes.
As has been pointed out, Mahan was worse than Buenning. But if Buenning was going to be the odd man out anyway, then Bruce might have effectively moved up a round or two in the draft for nothin'

The Sean Mahan Era was underwhelming to say the least. I laughed at the Steelers for throwing a pile of cash his way. Buenning on the other hand showed real promise before his knee injury. Maybe this was a way to reach the salary cap minimum as Mahan has a much larger cap value. I don't get it...and if Mahan has to played center for any extended amount of time due to injury...it's game, set, match for the season.

Love that we were able to trade Buenning. WTF are we doing bringing Sean "Turnstile" Mahan back for? That guy SUCKS! Maybe the player I've hated the most over my "fanhood"

8:33pm, September 2, 2008

cewilly

Are you guys nuts? You act like Buenning was headed to the Hall of Fame. The guy has sat on his butt for two years collecting a paycheck and hasn't seen the field. At least Mahan was a starter on a decent Steeler line, and he's the backup, not the starter on this team so quit griping.

sorry but anyone who watched Dan in TC knew his future was limited. He'll never fully recover from thie infury. Our second and thrid string guys were running over him.

I have to go with Blitz on this one. He looked like he was constantly struggling to redirect against second-team linemen, and his hallmark, his ability to run block, was seriously compromised as he just didn't seem to be able to get his hands on guys in space the way he used to. Yeah, the Steelers fans hated Mahan, but we aren't paying him to start. We're paying him to play slightly better than Buenning as a backup center. Davis and Zuttah are the backup guards; we needed a backup center. For a seventh round pick, and getting something in return for the guy we cut (and lets face it, it was going to be Davis or Buenning), I have no real problem with this.

If Mahan has to go in at Guard, it's an absoulute disaster in my opinion. Mahan was awful at guard, nowhere even close to Buenning and that was Buenning's rookie year. I watched Buenning handle Wolfork, the big Nose Tackle from New England this preseason while playing center. I don't think Mahan could block the guy with a dump truck, much less open a hole for the running game.
I don't know what Gruden or Allen is seeing, this smacks of some of the really stupid moves they've made before ie- Deese for Oben, Stichcomb for Jenkins, Joiner for Jones, or cutting Lynch to sign Stussie. It just doesn't make any sense. If Buenning and Zuttah had both totally floppped at center and there wasn't a single free agent center available in the universe, then I'd say with reservations, ok go ahead and trade for Mahan as long as he never touches the gaurd position. All we can do now is pray that he never steps on the field. If Mahan is starting at Gaurd, we will not win a playoff game. It's that simple.
They have taken a position of strength and made it the weakest position on the team, at least until Joseph gets back. Mahan is not a better center. He is a downgrade in the run game and the passing game. For those saying Buenning was struggling, you could not have been watching him play center against Miami or New England this preseason.

Excuse me, I should have said Garner for Jones in my post.

Torrino72

If Buenning or Mahan plays a significant amount of time, we're screwed. This line isn't built for either of them. Let us focus on Lee, this dude is steal, future starter, dare I say it now, future pro-bowler! Listen to the Gran Torrino, I called it, just after midnight on Sep. 3, 2008. Maybe not with us, but he'll pull a Hochstein and win a Superbowl, hell maybe even with the Patriots like Russ did. Buenning, Mahan, whatever. They are there to spell dudes. If they see any more time than that, well, that sucks!

12:07am, September 3, 2008

Davin, get healthy....fast! Your fans are starting to eat each other over the game you play that they watch.

All of this because we exchanged back-up center/guards. Once Joseph is healthy, Zutttah will be the back-up center/guard anyway.

If Mahan plays!!!!!!!, We will need more than 4 QBs on the roster!!!

I'm dumbfounded by this move. But I have extreme confidence in Bruce Allen and he must know something most of us don't...he's just got too!
