"There Is No Quarterback Controversy"

Bucs guard Davin Joseph could be back, and Jeff Garcia may be the backup quarterback on Sunday (getty)

Bucs guard Davin Joseph could be back, and Jeff Garcia may be the backup quarterback on Sunday (getty)

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden addressed the reports that the Bucs are making moves at quarterback. Also after two practices leading up to their game against the Denver Broncos, the team is still unsure which injured players will be able to play in the contest. Bucs guard Davin Joseph appears closer to coming back.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden spoke with the media after Thursday's practice. There has been a lot of talk about the Bucs quarterback situation as starter Brian Griese has thrown six interceptions in the past two games. There have been reports saying all of the top three quarterbacks will first team reps in practice this week, and that former starter Jeff Garcia would be elevated to the backup spot behind Griese.

"It was the same. We don't have any quarterback controversy. Griese took all the reps," said Gruden. "Jeff took a little bit. Luke [McCown] took his turn, but Griese is the starter."

Gruden answered if Garcia would be Griese's backup on Sunday.

"I don't know that," said Gruden. "We'll make that decision when we get to the stadium.

"We don't have any quarterback controversy at all. Jeff is getting well and we are excited about that."

Gruden did not have an update to the status of his injured players after Thursday's practice. Safety Sabby Piscitelli (elbow), wide receiver Joey Galloway, and fullback B.J. Askew all missed practice for the Bucs. Askew will be out on Sunday with his torn hamstring that will probably keep him out until late in October. After discussing some injured players, Gruden addressed the potential moves at quarterback.

"I don't have any updates," said Gruden. "We held out Aqib Talib with illness. He'll be okay I think."

Last week, guard Davin Joseph returned to practice on Wednesday but was unable to practice on Thursday and then missed the game against the Packers. Joseph broke his foot in the second preseason game, and has missed the first month of the season up to this point. Joseph practiced Wednesday this week and prior to practice on Thursday he said he would practice.

"Yeah and hopefully do more," said Joseph beforehand. "Hopefully, I get a bigger role and do more plays."

Gruden was asked about Joseph's performance in back-to-back practices.

"I thought he looked all right," said Gruden. "I get tired of talking about the injured players, but he looked better today and he has a chance to play."

As for if he will play on Sunday in Denver, and how much he would play, Joseph was not sure of how his status would work out.

"It is not just my decision either," said Joseph. "Coaches have their part in it. Trainers have their part in it. If you asked me I am confident that I am able to play. This week I responded a lot better and feel a lot better.

"That is what goes into the evaluation also. To be able to last the whole game, on the foot and conditioning, everything that goes into a football game. Practice is one step."

On the official injury the report the Bucs had Askew, Galloway, and Piscitelli listed as did not practice. Limited participation in practice were Joseph, linebacker Derrick Brooks (hamstring), defensive tackle Ryan Sims (groin), and Talib.

The Denver Broncos injury report for Thursday has not been released yet.

Of course we don't have a Quarterback Controversy because we don't have any quarterbacks that have proven that they are anything but average to sub average. Our Quarterback for the future is either not here yet or might be, mayb,e could ,perhaps, be Josh Johnson. Way too early to know. At this point, the QB is our weakest link, even more than wide receiver. That will probably cause a reaction. but at least we have RB's and TE's that can help the WR position weakness. We really don't have much to help at QB
Go Bucs! Play Harder! We can beat Denver, we just need over 20 points.

Everyone has an opinion. At this point I think we have 3 "capable" QB's. Maybe none are "World's Finest" but all three can handle the offense. That is not a bad thing.
Time will tell but in all honesty I feel better than I did last year with how far we could go. Maybe Garcia should be #1 when he is HEALTHY, maybe not, that is up for Coach Gruden to decide not me. I do like Griese and what he brings to the positive side MUCH more than what we had last year.
Luke has good potential but still has green around the gills. Big play potential but some question in the grind it out game.
I agree Griese is turning the ball over and that will cost us at some time but even Farve has that problem. If it continues and becomes an issue I feel Gruden will make a change.
Honestly I have seen a side of this team that has been lacking for several years and I like it. I almost, almost feel like if we get down we have the capability to pull it up by the boot straps and come back. That makes us a dangerous team and one of the elite.
Every team in the league has the potential to beat anyone, the GOOD teams have the strength to win the games they probably shouldn't.
Personally I would like to be ahead by 3 TD's in every game and kick back and relax, that isn't realistic. What I do like is if we are in a close game we have shown we CAN do what it takes to WIN. I have seen that with Griese, I haven't seen that as much with Garcia. Could just be luck of the draw, could be a confidence level with the rest of the team.
Next 3-4 weeks will tell alot. All I can say is......

GO BUCS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! see you in KC (my next game to attend)
