Bucs Sign WR Campbell

The Bucs added more speed to their WR corps with Kelly Campbell

The day after placing the franchise tag on Antonio Bryant, the Bucs added some more speed and playmaking ability to their WR corps on Thursday by signing Kelly Campbell. Playing for Edmonton in the Canadian Football League in 2008, Campbell had 58 catches for 1,223 yards (22.6 avg.) and seven TDs.

Antonio Bryant isn’t the only wide receiver on Tampa Bay’s radar right now. The Buccaneers have signed wide receiver Kelly Campbell to a one-year deal worth $535,000 in base salary. The 28-year old Campbell, who played collegiately at Georgia Tech, spent the 2008 season with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League, catching 58 passes for 1,223 yards and seven touchdowns while leading the CFL with a 22.6-yard avg.

Campbell, who is 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, has spent four years in the NFL with stops in Minnesota and Miami. He signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2002 and saw action in six games as a rookie, catching 13 passes for 176 yards and three TDs. He started six games the next year, catching 25 passes for 522 yards and four scores. Campbell also returned five kicks for 101 yards and carried the ball 10 times for 71 yards. In 2004, he started three games while appearing in all 16, catching 19 passes for 364 yards and a touchdown. He also averaged 21.7 yards on 35 kick returns.

Campbell spent the 2005 season out of the NFL after being arrested for marijuana possession and possession of a stolen handgun before the Dolphins came calling in ’06. In Miami, he was in the mix for the number three receiver spot behind Chris Chambers and Marty Booker before a quadriceps injury derailed that opportunity. The Dolphins waived Campbell after reaching an injury settlement. He was re-signed by Miami in 2007, but was released prior to training camp.

In addition to Campbell and Bryant, who received the franchise tag on Wednesday, the Bucs have seven other receivers on their 2009 roster in Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Maurice Stovall, Brian Clark, Dexter Jackson, Paris Warren and Anthony Mix. Starting flanker Michael Clayton and Cortez Hankton, who spent 2008 on injured reserve, are unrestricted free agents.

i posted this on the message boards on the 3rd of February. i cant believe we signed this bum. you forgot to mention he also had exctacy in his posession. Both drug counts were felonies. Do you know how much pot you have to have for a felony? a lot.

tomsan: Do you think Gruden and Allen would not take a shot with a risky player? You may want to look at the risky players that Allen and Gruden took in and did well. Give the team a chance.

Yeah, but those guys were, you know, like first round draft picks and former stars.

Wow.. this new coach and gm are really getting me excited.. What have we done so far? Kept QB's that couldn't start for anybody else and overpaid a wide receiver. We kept a guy on the defensive line that should be replaced and now we sign a guy nobody as heard of.. what to go.. team.. Get Gruden and Allen back quick..

Come on now, let's wait till they put a team on the field before we grade them. We have to stand behind the team and not start picking them apart.

To late to get Gruden. He's working the NFL Network and will be working it with Sapp too!!

Calm down sheesh. We signed some nobody for the league minimum. He likely wpn't make it past training camp but who knows. Maybe Dog Williams saw something in him and he might be a steal. Either way.....just relex.

Wow... Are people really fans here?

This signing is nothing.. It's no risk at all.. Only the possibly of reward. Just like the signing of Bryant last year.. didn't he have issue as well..

For real......I love the way people over react to the simpliest things. Just so I'm on the same page with everyone, we fire the new head coach and general manager because we franchise our best offensive weapon and sign a WR with some past issues to a one year league minimum contract. Yea that makes sense...........

I totally agree sunrisejeff. If the guy doesn't make the team, so what...we took a shot on guy leading a professional league in reception average. If/when this guy excels...I want you same knuckleheads to show up here with apology in hand.

I read the same rumblings about Antonio Bryant last year. But this is a low risk with high potential for reward. How'd that signing work out?

And the same thing with David Boston. Except that didn't turn out well. But did that harm the Bucs AT ALL in the overall schme of things? Not in the least.

So calm down and relax, people. Geez... So many armchair GMs here.

you people are crazy, Antonio Bryant having an attitude problem and this guy running drugs are completely different. i dont know about you, but i dont want to pay the salaries of a bunch of criminals. the reason why these athletes act the way they do is because we pay them. Guys like Campbell do not deserve the chance to be in the NFL. you can take the thug out the hood but you cant take the hood out the thug. Rediculous.

I like this move. It smells of a regime who are not willing to sit back and remain a "B" team. This is a swinging for the fences type move that will either turn out great or into another guy who's not good enough and will be cut along with about 30 other guys. Happens every year unfortunately.

He's a vertical guy that fits our new style of offense, so I'll welcome him with open arms. I honestly don't care what any of these guys have done in the past, I really don't. I only care if they way they carry themselves now affect team chemistry. I'll take a guy like this over Keyshawn any day of the week. Keyshawn also sucks as an analyst...man I hate that guy...

I agree.. I don't care about what he did in the past.. Dude should be grateful to be back on a NFL team and play hard. If he doesn't .. oh well.. see ya..

I don't think we need a new Coach and GM, we need some new fans. Every team signs nobodys to be camp bodies and if they shine then alright, if not they wont make the team. You can't just give up on your team so quick. Learn some patience and hope that in the end it will all come together. This signing is a blip on the radar, quit being a bunch of babies...

pinkstob -- maybe you can borrow his stolen gun and... oh nevermind. (:-o)

(and for all you law enforcement types out there -- this was a joke. Geez, these days you have to be sooooo careful!!)

Not sure if I like the sign - because it wasn't just a weapon, it was stolen. Unlike other players the BUCs have signed with attitude or drug problems, this sounds like a severe character flaw issue and bad news.

But I'm not too concerned - he still has to make the team...

Keep up the good work fellas....don't let a stone be unturned! Let's get Byron Leftwich...I got a great feeling about this guy with Luke McCown. Hmmmm...bring back Dwight Smith, he was always better in a Buc uniform anyway!!!

8:34pm, February 20, 2009

JDouble

I hope some other team signs Leftwich on day one of Free Agency so I we can stop with the Leftwich comments. I think some of you are so use to the Bucs being led by 2nd rate cast off QBs, that you now expect and want it. The guy is a back up for a reason.
