"This Is Barrett's Defense Now" |
![]() Bucs MLB Barrett Ruud (51) is the only returning starter at linebacker in 2009 (Cliff Welch) |
In a shockingly swift move, new Bucs head coach Raheem Morris and GM Mark Dominik released 14-year veteran Derrick Brooks and handed the leadership reins of Tampa Bay's defense to middle linebacker Barrett Ruud. Ruud and his teammates acknowledge that he's ready to take on an even greater leadership role in 2009.
It only took a quick conversation between new Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris, general manager Mark Dominik and Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks, a 14-year veteran and the most decorated player in team history, to change the face of the Buccaneers franchise.
With his release, this is no longer Brooks’ defense.
It’s Barrett Ruud’s defense.
Although he has been preparing for the day when he would take over the defense when Brooks’ days in Tampa Bay were done, the news came as a shock to Ruud, who enters his fifth year in the NFL, when he found out that Wednesday was that day.
“It was a surprise,” Ruud told PewterReport.com. “This is the tough part about the NFL. You establish friendships with people, but business is the priority in this league. Tough decisions get made all the time in this league.”
Ruud said that his leadership style mimics Brooks’ in that both players choose to lead by example, but he knows that he will have to be a bit more vocal now that the defense will be looking to him to guide them.
“Leadership is a process. I think it took Derrick a full 14 years to become the leader he was last year,” Ruud said. “Derrick commands so much respect just by what he’s done on the field in his career. I don’t think I’m going to change too much. With Derrick being gone, maybe I have to be a little more vocal, but I’m not going to yell and scream. I’m going to do what I’ve always done and maybe encourage guys a little bit more. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve done to get me this far.”
Having played in 63 games with 35 starts, Ruud is now the elder statesman in the Bucs' young linebackers room in terms of playing time. Aside from Brooks, Tampa Bay's starting weakside linebacker, tthe team also released starting strongside linebacker Cato June along with wide receivers Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard and Warrick Dunn in a youth movement.
“I guess I’m the old guy now,” Ruud said with a laugh. “I’m 25 and I feel like I’m getting further away from 21 when I was in my prime! It will be a little different for sure. This past year, Derrick wasn’t necessarily a crutch for me, but more of just a comfort factor in knowing he was there and you could always talk to him about anything. It will be different now that he’s not there. He hadn’t missed a game in 221 starts. He was somebody that you could always count on. Now guys will be counting on me in that same capacity.”
The legendary Brooks, surely bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when his playing days are done, will always Mr. Buccaneer – the best player ever to play in Tampa Bay. Better than Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon and better than the great under tackle Warren Sapp.
But after Morris and Dominik broke the news to Brooks that the team was going to go in a different direction, the focus on defense now shifts to Ruud, who figures to be the next great linebacker in Tampa Bay history, following the lead of players like Brooks, Hardy Nickerson, Scot Brantley and Shelton Quarles. Ruud, a second-round draft pick in 2005, got his chance to start at middle linebacker in 2007 when the Bucs told the aging Quarles it was time to move on.
“That’s just the NFL. What happened to Brooks happened before (with Quarles),” Ruud said. “That’s how it happens. It’s going to happen to me some day. I hope I can make it about 14 years before a new guy jumps in and takes my spot. That’s how it goes. The good thing for me is that I got to spend four years with Derrick and the last two with Cato. I couldn’t have been luckier to do that.”
Ruud burst on the scene in ’07, narrowly beating out Brooks for the team tackle lead with a career-high 235 tackles. Last year, Ruud maintained his role as the team’s tackle leader with 178 stops. This time, the younger, faster and more durable Ruud beat out Brooks, who made the Pro Bowl, in the tackle department by a whopping 68 stops last year.
Not only will Ruud have to adjust to Jim Bates’ new Bucs defensive scheme, he will also have to adjust to being flanked by two new linebackers. The departure of Brooks and June, who had started at the strongside linebacker position since his arrival in Tampa Bay in 2007, opens the door for young players such as Quincy Black, Adam Hayward and Geno Hayes, who were all drafted by the Bucs, in addition to free agent additions Matt McCoy and Rod Wilson.
“The younger guys have done a good job for us,” Ruud said. “Nobody really walks right in and starts very often in this league. It’s rare to do that – especially as a linebacker. As a linebacker, you have to learn the defense and how to play and how to make reads at a pro level. It takes some time. Obviously, you have to start somewhere and you have to start sometime. They are going to get a shot to earn starting jobs this spring. They’ll be fine. It will be fun to see them battle it out for starting positions.”
The Bucs will undoubtedly look to add another linebacker or two in free agency or the NFL Draft, but the team obviously felt comfortable with some of its young players it has been developing. While they expressed the same degree of shock that Ruud did when they received the news that Brooks and June were released, they are anxious for the chance to play alongside Ruud and follow his lead.
“As of right now, Barrett is not just the leader of the linebacker room, but he’s also the leader of the defense,” Black said. “He goes out there day in and day out and does his job and performs well. He’s learned a lot from Derrick and Cato and you could tell he was taking on more of a leadership role last year.”
Hayward agreed that Ruud, whose 413 career tackles trails Brooks’ team record by 1,785 stops, is ready to take over the defense.
“I know Barrett took on more of a leadership role last year,” Hayward said. “Even Derrick would respect him enough to look to Barrett to make the calls. When you are the middle linebacker, it’s your huddle. Barrett is a great player, who is definitely smart. Everybody respects him. This is Barrett’s defense now with Derrick gone. It’s time for Barrett to do his thing and continue to get better and take the defense with him.”

What scared me the most today was the fumbling, inexperienced, lack of confidence put on display by Raheem and Dominick. These guys are easily on their way to the title of worst-spoken duo in the NFL. I realize they're football coaches, but it's the job of these two men to rally the organization with their words and wisdom. Uhhh.... I felt like I was watching two freshmen in highschool stumbling while asking the head cheerleader out on a date.
Dominick said that today was "rebuilding". No. Today was "tearing down". What he does starting Friday will tell if he is capable or not.
This team HAS to make several splash signings in the free agency period. With todays cuts and the rumors that the Glazers are unwilling to spend money - fan morale may reach an all-time low if they play it cheap next week.

Why waste your time posting negative things without doing the research to see what other teams have had to do the same. (i.e.,2008 Steelers) The bottom line is this no longer a weak front office that is afraid to do what is needed and hold over players that are just good enough to get you to the playoffs or JUST contending for the division. It is about the big dance and building to that game. Ask yourself, prior to this off-season, were we building to that? (Under Gruden/Allen) If so, where is your supporting data? (And I am not a Gruden Hater)
As PR pointed out, ownership wasn't sold on the "scowl" and "excuses" anymore. Produce or go home is the nature of the business and that is what it is, a business.
They did not look bad as decision makers, they are actually showing strength by doing something that Bucs fans feared but know is needed. Could and would you have had a different reaction immediately after the Oakland loss? YES. Bottom liine it had to be done.
Thanks,

Then Morris says during what hands down was the worst reasoned duo display of public speaking that I have ever seen at a an NFL press conference that the decision had nothing to do with youth. Right? Someone tell me who we are going to get that is going to do a better job playing weakside linebacker than Brooks in 2009. I would be shocked if we even went after Bart Scott, much less any other big name free agents such as Haynesworth. I can't tell you how tired I am of so many people in this city talking about how great it's going to be to go through a youth movement and how we have needed to get so much younger. Getting youger doesn't guarantee you a damn thing. We already have a significant number of quality young players on our team and will hopefully acquire several more in the draft. Every successful team has a good number of veterans to lead the way. Even if you are a believer that Brooks' skills had declined, it would have been worth keeping him on the team just to have his leadership in the locker room for another year. Barret would still be able to lead. Brooks obviously did not play well the last four games of the season, but he was playing with a hamstring injury that a lot of players probably wouldn't even have played with. With the exception of those four games and the first against NO, I thought he played really well this year. The games he played against the Packers and Vikings were two of the best games he played in three years.
For many reasons this is a horrible decision to let him go. If Gruden were still here, many of you would blame him for being the one who was responsible for this decision. He's not here to blame anymore. I did't hear one sound reason for this decision at the press conference. Anyone who hasn't watched it should do so.

As far as the press conference, I agree 100%. They truly are horrible public speakers....especially Rheem. I hope he is better when speaking to and rallying the team.
I hope I'm way off base, but it almost seems like the Glazers are using Rheem as a scapegoat. Make him HC for a year, use him to cut all the oldtimer fan favorites so he takes the blame, and then fire him next year and hire a real coach to rebuild starting with a top 5 draft pick. I sure hope I am wrong though.

Sorry - but I have to throw your point right back at you - do YOUR research first. Negativity has nothing to do with it. The Steelers teams you mentioned and other teams that have cut their great players have done so because they had to clear up cap room that the team needed to fill needs. The Bucs on the other hand, have the most cap room available in the history of the NFL - over 60 million - there was no reason to make the move.
By no means should Brooks be the starter this year if he can't play, But to fire him and put him on the street is absurd. His experience in mentoring his replacement would have been invaluable in what would have been the last year of his contract. We went from having a solid and experienced LB core to Barret Ruud and 5 guys who have never played before.
Most importantly - how do you think axeing Derick Brooks will look to potential free agents - do you think that will entice them, especially considering the Bucs had zero financial reason to do so? How do you think the utter lack of confidence / speaking incompetence Morris and Dominic displayed today will look to free agents.
I was one of Gruden's biggest fans. I totally agree with the youth movement and with all the other cuts made today. But there is zero argument for cutting Derrick Brooks. Let's hope that money and money alone talks - after today that might be the only thing that gets free agents over here.

Brook and Barber got beat so many plays aka..Panther, ATL. Raider... especially Barber. I'm surprise that he isn't one of them to be cut.... Remember Bucs fan! It's time to let go.......

You all complain about the Glazers don't want too spend money. They spent 18 million the day they fired Gruden and Allen. The only way ther don't pay all of that is when the two of them get another job. Talk about a nice unemployment check. If the glazers had an issue with spending money then they would having never made the decision. Also for all of you Research this FACT: The Glazers petition the NFL to let them use some of their money from the bucs to start up their soccer endevour. The NFL said absolutely not and they would be in some major trouble if they mixed their money from the bucs with the soccer team. The only money of theirs they can put into that soccer team is the profit of the bucs that they pay themselves as owners. The rest of that profit belongs the the bucs organization. So research that and get the hell over this crap of "Oh no are owners don't wanna spend money, and they are pissing away all our free agent money."
I do hate to see what happened today, although I don't disagree. I would have loved to see Derrick stay at least in a back up role. But we all know that it was time. I love Derrick, and thank him for his time and commitment. I have been a fan of Derrick and Warrick when they played for FSU, go Seminoles.
I don't see how anybody can even have an opinion about what Raheem and Dominic are doing. THE GUYS HAVEN'T EVEN STEPPED ON THE FIELD YET. It's all a numbers game. Who cares how long they have played or were they played. We won't know crap until we hit the football field. You really think that the fans in Arizona actually thought this year was the year they would make it to the Super Bowl, I am sure some did, but the majority probably not. Give the guys a chance, lets see what happens when they get on the field. Come on Rays fans you should no how this is, who even thought that the Rays would have a good season, but the Worlds Series, wow. Who gave them a chance. Maybe that is good then, maybe if our fans don't believe it will motivate Raheem, staff, and team even more. Keep giving them ammo guys.
I also hear several people saying " oh, well I hope that he can motivate the players, cause well golly he isn't the best at speaking in public. Who gives a s*%t. You want a good speaker or a football coach. I want someone who wants to put guys out there that are going to fly around and play some motivated football. Does anybody remember when Raheem was hired and had his press conference. Watch this real quick: http://www.buccaneers.com/multimedia/videoarchive.aspx?filename=200190117_RaheemMorrisHeadCoach.flv
If you watched it try to count how many times he was asked about the type of coach he is. A high motor, energetic type of guy that players just love to play for. That is why he was hired. If he wins a few games maybe the Glazers will bust there wallet and hire him a speech writer for those of you who can't do anyhting but bi&$h.
Get over it all and be excited, we have a new start, new coaches, new players, and a lot of money to spend. Don't forget too, next year will be uncapped season, so maybe we should save some of that 65 million. Also refering to some statements above about how long guys have played, I think we have done well with young guys lately.
Clifton Smith- pro Bowl rookie season
Donald Penn- tell me how long has it been since we had better
Trueblood- oh lets call Kenyatta up and see if he wants his spot back, come on people.
Earnest Graham- undrafted freee agent/ one of the better players on our team.
McCown- i wonder if those that are doubting him now are the ones that screamed for him in that Atlanta game last year.

1) 1976-86- expansion franchise, growth, the release of Kevin House, Jimmy Giles and such marked the end of the first era.
2)1987-1991- This Vinny to Carrier era had a mark all of its own.
3)1992-1996- Sam changed the uniforms, and the feel of craig erickson, dave moore, reggie cobb, michael husted...
4) 1997- 2008- really began in 96 but the feel of this era starts with our new uniforms and our win over the 49ers. It was a non ending QB shuffle from Trent,Shawn,Brad, Brian, Chris, Bruce, and Jeff.
5) 2009- In so many ways this reminds me of when Tony took over. Were going to field young hungry players, and play BUC BALL.

I couldn't have said it any better. And to add one more thing about these people whinning about Raheem's speaking ability at his press conferences. Those same people should listen to Bill Belichick speak to the media...he doesn't exactly set the world on fire in his press conferences. In fact he's an awful interview which most folks in the media have stated time and time again, but I bet you anything that you'd love to have him lead your team.
Bottom line let's stop knit picking until the guy actually coaches a single game...at least give in an inch of rope!

Also you have to think about the fact that the Bucs have invested alot of draft picks at young linebackers who have sat on the bench the last few years. These guys will be free agents soon and the bucs will need to see what they got in them. I always hear how the bucs dont get much of of draft picks. Well now they are trying to give these guys a shot and people are upset. Give it time.
Derrick was a smart cover 2 linebacker. He knew that system inside and out. He knew where everyone was suppose to be and what they were goiung to do. He doesnt know the new system as well and that split second that he has think will hurt since he doesnt have the physical ability to make up for it any longer.
Time to move on. I wish it didnt happen but it did. All teams ulitmately have to deal with this and more often than not it ends the same. Fred taylor will be in another uni as the same with Marvin Harrision. Bruce Smith left Buffalo and Thurman Thomas was a Dolphin. Emmitt a Cardinal and who remembers Reggie White as a Panther. It happens. Players refuse to give the game up or become reserves and teams have to move on.

I fully understand what your saying. I may have labeled everybody with my comments. I am sure that there are some that liked gruden and do like Raheem. I can't say I was a large gruden fan, but I do appreciate what he brought us. I think that what raheem is doing is bringing in a bunches of young guys that that he can motivate and invigorate every weekend. I hate to see our greats go just as much as you do. But if you watched Brooks and his press conference he made it sound as if the Bucs offered him something in the offer or in coaching, he jsut isn't sure if that is were he is ready to go yet. I hope that he retire's and doesn't try to play another year and it goes all wrong for him, but you can bet on it if he plays for another team I will have to root for them (except when we play them).
