The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost out in the bidding war for Tennessee Titans free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth when he agreed to a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday morning. The Bucs are in the process of trying to line up visits with several players.
Haynesworth, 27, agreed to terms on a blockbuster contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday morning. The seven-year contract is worth $100 million and includes $41 million in guaranteed money in the first three years, according to Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck. Haynesworth will be the highest-paid player in the NFL.
The Bucs were targeting the 6-foot-6, 320-pound Haynesworth because the team has a void at the defensive tackle position in new defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme.
Tampa Bay is in the process of attempting to line up visits with several free agents, including Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma. The team is also attempting to visit with Cardinals defensive end Antonio Smith and Giants running back Derrick Ward, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Too many questions surround this team. We have new everything.
New Head coach. New GM. New philosophy.
New Offensive coordinator. New system that doesn't have a play book yet (still being printed).
New Defensive coordinator. New system which brings many questions yet to be answered.
I wouldn't sign here if someone else was giving me the same money.
It's going to be a long year.....................

Haynesworth only ended up getting 16 to 17 million a year, peanuts for the Bucs. The reason he went to the Redskins is because they offered more guaranteed money,41 million won it for the skins. The way the Bucs spend 41 mill would have been nothing.
We need to get the tackle out of Seatle, he is a poor man's Haynesworth, def tackle that gets sacks and the wr Devery Henderson.
Can't wait to see how Dominck and Raheem spin this.

We dont even have anyone scheduled to visit one buc place yet???? What are these morons doing. I am so sick of teams with no cap space beating us out when we are the richest team in the NFL back to back seasons and dont spend it.

So you all can drop all this talk that Tampa aren't players in this free agency period

This is the new Bucs from the old Bucs past history except we must have a QB in order the for the defense to work.
Are some of you people living on an island? The economy is in dire straits and sinking. The smart NFL teams like the Bucs aren't going to go and ask for bail outs.
We're getting younger for a reason; it's cheaper too.
Go Bucs. Just by investing carefully now, we can pick up grat deals next year. Superbowl would be nice, but this is a major rebuilding year. by 2010 we could be a very good team.
Go Bucs

A swing & a huge miss by the Bucs in missing out on AH. They obviously liked him & his potential in TB well enough to finish second but not commit the final $$$ it would take to land him (or so it would appear). Landing AH would have sent a message to the fans they are serious about rebuilding the team - not just restructuring the payroll. Perhaps not a fair analysis - but the majority of fans (& probably some columnists will see it that way.)
How many more tiks, jerseys, etc would have been sold had the Bucs signed Haynesworth? Would it alone have made up the difference with da Skins? Bottom line is it looks like the Skins out spent the Bucs on Haynesworth & the Bucs had record cap money. Who made the better choice? We'll see next year.
On the Bucs board now:
LB: Vilma, Scott, Boley
RB: Ward
WR: Washington, Clayton
TE: Franks
DT: none?
DE: A Smith
S: McGowan
CB: Buchanon, McFadden
As you can see there aren't many on the board. To me the crucial ones to get are:
1. Antonio Smith - great proven speed rush (Canty will be too $$$)
2. N Washinghton - The Bucs need more speed at WR - this may be the only one available. (Speed at WR - takes pressure off the QB position.)
3. Vilma - not just the upgrade from his talent but the double whammy on the Saints
4. McFadden, Buchanon - Cover corners are hard to find for Bates D
5. McGowan - with PBuc gone - gotta have it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These guys won't sell tickets - but the Bucs will have the cast they want - they believe they can win with (& that will sell tiks).
Gotta wonder why there are no DT's on the board? Especially Rocky Bernard. It's a need that will be difficult to address in the draft.
(BIG) DT's Available: Bernard, Tank Johnson, Brain McKinney, Anthony Montgomery, Gabe Watson.
QB's didn't get a mention & that means the Bucs are happy with the current stock - unless they draft for the future. Still they might want another veteran to compete. Leftwich, Grossman, Boller.
RB's - if they are going after Ward, the Bucs must not be satisfied with current RB stock. This might become a higher priority in the draft - but quality can be had in the later rounds.
Other FA's available that fit the Bucs plan:
----------------------------------------------------------------
LB: Burnch, Andra Davis
S: Dawkins, Bouleware, Leonhard, Holt, M Manuel, PBuc
DE: Canty ($$$)
WR: Johnson, Gaffney, Jones
RB: Benson, Arrington
TE: Daniels, R Royal, Troupe, Stevens
CB: C Johnson, K Ratliff
If the Bucs land Antonio Smith, now do they try to move up for a DT in the draft? Or it would free them to look elsewhere in the 1st round at a playmaker st WR or QB or LB?

Don't blame them for not getting Haynesworth, that's a lot of money. I like Canty better than Smith, but I'd take either one. Wouldn't mind them signing both and maybe trading Adams to move up in the draft to get the DT they need. The players to really fix this team are out there, they just need to find a way to sign them.

I know everyone had their hearts set on Haynesworth. I didn't. I didn't want to give him that contract two days after cutting Derrick Brooks. We could get five players for that price. Besides, if what Schefter said was true it just came down to his agent wanting to save face and pushing Haynesworth into Washington.
SR and JF will get the scoop on this in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I look forward to the other seven players we are going to sign.

The QB is the foundation and we don't have a foundation at this time which is why Kansas City who has a ton of cap space won't be an attractive play for any FA to play because they don't have a really rad QB. Maybe the Bucs should just sign Cassel now that they're finding out that without Gruden or the opportunity to play in the architect of the famous cover 2 (Monte Kiffen)
Also what veteran FA that's a superstar wants to hear that aging veterans won't be given a day off to rest chronic injuries like hamstrings (Joey Galloway)? I thought it was pretty smart for Gruden not to force veterans with chronic hamstring injuries to do 2 a days and it kept them fresh.
Raheem is coming off like a hard ass and cutting a ton of
loyal and talented players just 2 days before FA partly because their bodies may not withstand the rigors of the harder practices when many very productive veteran's bodies are simply worn out by too many harsh practices that don't take their bodies into consideration.
If you're a veteran who wants to run down fly balls with your son or kids when you retire who wants to play for a coach that helps you run your legs into the ground with an unreasonable regimine that doesn't respect all of the injuries these same veterans have played through for years? Where's the respect? And all this from a 32 year old who's assumed to be the likeness of Mike Tomlin (tough, young, smart, ex Buc DB coach who wins a Super Bowl in his second year)?
Trent Dilfer and other players have commented that Raheem isn't nearly as smart as Tomlin but has a lot of energy so I guess that the Glazer's cookie cutter mold for "an up and coming bright young coach" might not come to fruition cause last time I checked, the Steelers HAVE a franchise QB and are vastly more talented than the Bucs.
Glazers: Get a stud QB and a CLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
