Haynesworth Agrees To Record Deal With 'Skins

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost out in the bidding war for Tennessee Titans free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth when he agreed to a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday morning. The Bucs are in the process of trying to line up visits with several players.

Despite entering the free agent signing period with a league-high $65 million, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't come away with free agency's biggest prize - Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Haynesworth, 27, agreed to terms on a blockbuster contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday morning. The seven-year contract is worth $100 million and includes $41 million in guaranteed money in the first three years, according to Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck. Haynesworth will be the highest-paid player in the NFL.

The Bucs were targeting the 6-foot-6, 320-pound Haynesworth because the team has a void at the defensive tackle position in new defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme.

Tampa Bay is in the process of attempting to line up visits with several free agents, including Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma. The team is also attempting to visit with Cardinals defensive end Antonio Smith and Giants running back Derrick Ward, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Every f'n year people say, those foolish Redskins this signing is going to ruin their salary cap.... well, that is bull crap. Because they do it every f'n year. How? It doesn't make any sense.

Here we go again Buc fans. Talk a lot of s*** and come up with crap. Maybe we can get a 3rd string running back from a loser team to fill our void. The D-line SUCKS and needs help. This just makes me sick.............

Can someone explain to me how a team with 61 million dollars in cap space, a state with beautiful weather and no state tax, a beautiful training facility and stadium, a team known for defense gets outplayed by a team that has no cap room. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I agree we don't want to overpay for someone but at this point, letting the face of the franchise go and basically creating more holes than we already had and fans already pissed off.. how can this new regime not make it happen. I may be in the minority but this franchise started its slide when they let Gruden go..and then we sign a coach that has zero experience.. Free Agency is the way the Glazers are supposed to show us these moves are not money driven.. I know it's early but good god..open up your f#### wallets and start signing some players now before everyone else gets them...

And I was sure the Bucs were going to land Haynesworth after the Redskins overpaid for Hall and leaving them with zero money in cap space. If I'm a Redskins player today I would be very nervous especially if your making a lot of money.

WERE GOING TO GET RAN ON LIKE A BUNCH OF CHUMPS.... WE HAVE WAY TO MANY NEEDS ON DEFENSE AND OFFENSE NOW THAT WE HAVE LET GO OF HALF THE STARTING TEAM.... FIRST GUESS OF THE YEAR FOR RECORD 4-12

should we have paid that much for him, i dont think so

I wanna know how this deal was reported as a done deal two days ago. WTF? How can the Redskins get away with blatent tampering? It is beyond obvious that his agent was talking to the Redskins before last night at midnight. This is bullshit.

The Redskins are idiots as usual, they over paid like they always do.

It ain't like the Bucs didn't try to get Haynesworth.. He just chose Washington over Tampa.. He may do good in Washington, but I was really worried that he would tank it in after his big payday.. but like I said you can't say that Tampa didn't try.. they were his second choice..

8:57am, February 27, 2009

cblack_01

Good, he wanted way too much money and I am glad the Bucs didn't pay it. The Bucs should be calling Tank Johnson though, he has good size, can stop the run and push the pocket. His past troubles seem to be in the past as well.

I'd love to see Vilma in pewter and red. Get it done!

Teams tamper every year.. The NFL just chooses to ignore it.. The Bucs were accused of it last year when they signed Jeff Faine. I agree when it happens to you.. I'm pissed too. Coming in second means nothing. This new regime had a change to make a big splash and failed already.. And now Bart Scott is going elsewhere.. so what the f*** is our team doing? Nothing!!!!
We will lucky to win 2 games next year with the all the holes we have and to think we can fill all this in the draft is a joke.

9:02am, February 27, 2009

Bart Scott
Jonathan Vima
Bryant McFadden
Devery Henderson
Chris Canty

Please get it done.

That is a LOT of money (not to mention the guaranteed money) for a glorified run stuffing DT. Every year the Redskins do that, and every year they're still not any good. You have to think that making ridiculous contracts like that makes everyone else on the team pretty angry.

Now the NFL network is wondering what the Bucs are doing with the most cap space of any team. I thought this team had a f****** plan.. what is it? Start signing some f***** players now. Of course we don't have a QB so no receivers are going to want to come here. Players that would want to play with a legend like Derrick Brooks don't want to come cause they know they can't replace him. So what is this new regime doing.. besides nothing.. they need to trade for Cassell now and then sign Who's your momma.

To much money, I'm betting the guy is 400lbs and out of shape by training camp. No time for the Buc's to cry. Chris Canty was supposed to be flying into Washington for a visit today. They need to just divert his trip to Tampa and get a deal done. I think we'll end up better off anyway if we can get Canty. Canty has the potential to explode in a 4-3 defense.
They need to move faster, they should have some guys on their way in already.

Canty
Cole
Vilma
Hunter
Barnett
Huzmenzada
Henderson
Ward
Washington

Scott is going to Jets. I would rather have Scott than Vilma. Personally the Bucs should have signed Scott and Lewis. It's not like we don't have the money or spots for them.

I think most quality FA's will avoid signing here.
Too many questions surround this team. We have new everything.
New Head coach. New GM. New philosophy.
New Offensive coordinator. New system that doesn't have a play book yet (still being printed).
New Defensive coordinator. New system which brings many questions yet to be answered.
I wouldn't sign here if someone else was giving me the same money.
It's going to be a long year.....................

The Bucs don't want to win, they just want to save the most money. I said it a couple days ago, they are going to put a minimum amount you have to spend because of the Bucs. Now we have all this money and there are not any other great players. If we are not going ot outbid teams what is the point in saving all this money other than counting it as profit.

Haynesworth only ended up getting 16 to 17 million a year, peanuts for the Bucs. The reason he went to the Redskins is because they offered more guaranteed money,41 million won it for the skins. The way the Bucs spend 41 mill would have been nothing.

We need to get the tackle out of Seatle, he is a poor man's Haynesworth, def tackle that gets sacks and the wr Devery Henderson.

Can't wait to see how Dominck and Raheem spin this.

Glazers suck and are some of the worst owners of all time!!!! My Dad who has been a season ticket holder since 79 had to cough up his seats last season because these greedy assholes raised ticket prices so high last year and now they are too F!#(*$&*#& cheap to sign any good players. The super bowl champs NYG raised tickets by 5 dollars, Glazers 25? WTF?

We dont even have anyone scheduled to visit one buc place yet???? What are these morons doing. I am so sick of teams with no cap space beating us out when we are the richest team in the NFL back to back seasons and dont spend it.

9:58am, February 27, 2009

Adam Schefter was just on Sirius.. and said he heard Tampa's offer was higher than Washington's .. He just chose the Redskins..

So you all can drop all this talk that Tampa aren't players in this free agency period

The money game this year is to not to cap out and save about half for next year. Vilma is a must for us. We need to sign him. Everyone else, we hang in there and look for bargains. Take a reach on a QB in the 1st round and trade down rounds 2 and 3 for more young hard hitting/gang tackling/ want to make it in the NFL types no matter what.
This is the new Bucs from the old Bucs past history except we must have a QB in order the for the defense to work.
Are some of you people living on an island? The economy is in dire straits and sinking. The smart NFL teams like the Bucs aren't going to go and ask for bail outs.
We're getting younger for a reason; it's cheaper too.
Go Bucs. Just by investing carefully now, we can pick up grat deals next year. Superbowl would be nice, but this is a major rebuilding year. by 2010 we could be a very good team.
Go Bucs

Most Bucs fans have already paid their money, & see TB has record money to spend after releasing fan favorites - now they want a 'splash.'

A swing & a huge miss by the Bucs in missing out on AH. They obviously liked him & his potential in TB well enough to finish second but not commit the final $$$ it would take to land him (or so it would appear). Landing AH would have sent a message to the fans they are serious about rebuilding the team - not just restructuring the payroll. Perhaps not a fair analysis - but the majority of fans (& probably some columnists will see it that way.)

How many more tiks, jerseys, etc would have been sold had the Bucs signed Haynesworth? Would it alone have made up the difference with da Skins? Bottom line is it looks like the Skins out spent the Bucs on Haynesworth & the Bucs had record cap money. Who made the better choice? We'll see next year.

On the Bucs board now:

LB: Vilma, Scott, Boley
RB: Ward
WR: Washington, Clayton
TE: Franks
DT: none?
DE: A Smith
S: McGowan
CB: Buchanon, McFadden

As you can see there aren't many on the board. To me the crucial ones to get are:
1. Antonio Smith - great proven speed rush (Canty will be too $$$)
2. N Washinghton - The Bucs need more speed at WR - this may be the only one available. (Speed at WR - takes pressure off the QB position.)
3. Vilma - not just the upgrade from his talent but the double whammy on the Saints
4. McFadden, Buchanon - Cover corners are hard to find for Bates D
5. McGowan - with PBuc gone - gotta have it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These guys won't sell tickets - but the Bucs will have the cast they want - they believe they can win with (& that will sell tiks).

Gotta wonder why there are no DT's on the board? Especially Rocky Bernard. It's a need that will be difficult to address in the draft.
(BIG) DT's Available: Bernard, Tank Johnson, Brain McKinney, Anthony Montgomery, Gabe Watson.

QB's didn't get a mention & that means the Bucs are happy with the current stock - unless they draft for the future. Still they might want another veteran to compete. Leftwich, Grossman, Boller.

RB's - if they are going after Ward, the Bucs must not be satisfied with current RB stock. This might become a higher priority in the draft - but quality can be had in the later rounds.

Other FA's available that fit the Bucs plan:
----------------------------------------------------------------
LB: Burnch, Andra Davis
S: Dawkins, Bouleware, Leonhard, Holt, M Manuel, PBuc
DE: Canty ($$$)
WR: Johnson, Gaffney, Jones
RB: Benson, Arrington
TE: Daniels, R Royal, Troupe, Stevens
CB: C Johnson, K Ratliff

If the Bucs land Antonio Smith, now do they try to move up for a DT in the draft? Or it would free them to look elsewhere in the 1st round at a playmaker st WR or QB or LB?

mostlarge- They need to move faster than their compitition. Washington had Canty scheduled for a Visit and was in the process of signing Haynesworth. Those are the top two free agents at their positions. With the rumors of Haynesworth already headed to Washington days ago, they should be the ones that have Canty coming in for a visit.
Don't blame them for not getting Haynesworth, that's a lot of money. I like Canty better than Smith, but I'd take either one. Wouldn't mind them signing both and maybe trading Adams to move up in the draft to get the DT they need. The players to really fix this team are out there, they just need to find a way to sign them.

Part of the reasons the Skins have been able to do this is because the salary cap has doubled in size over the last eight years. That will end with the next round of the CBA (or, conversely, there will be no salary cap and the NFL will turn into Major League Baseball).

I know everyone had their hearts set on Haynesworth. I didn't. I didn't want to give him that contract two days after cutting Derrick Brooks. We could get five players for that price. Besides, if what Schefter said was true it just came down to his agent wanting to save face and pushing Haynesworth into Washington.

SR and JF will get the scoop on this in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I look forward to the other seven players we are going to sign.

Guys aren't coming to this small market. That's o.k., we won a championship by drafting Brooks, Sapp, Lynch. That's the plan. Sprinkle in some free agents like Fain, find a diamond in the rough like Bryant. Get younger faster, let guys compete, and earn jobs, thats the plan. The Skins always make a splash in free agentcy, look how good that's worked out for them.

How do you sign a true superstar when you don't have an established stud at QB? Our QB's are McCown and Griese?

The QB is the foundation and we don't have a foundation at this time which is why Kansas City who has a ton of cap space won't be an attractive play for any FA to play because they don't have a really rad QB. Maybe the Bucs should just sign Cassel now that they're finding out that without Gruden or the opportunity to play in the architect of the famous cover 2 (Monte Kiffen)

Also what veteran FA that's a superstar wants to hear that aging veterans won't be given a day off to rest chronic injuries like hamstrings (Joey Galloway)? I thought it was pretty smart for Gruden not to force veterans with chronic hamstring injuries to do 2 a days and it kept them fresh.

Raheem is coming off like a hard ass and cutting a ton of
loyal and talented players just 2 days before FA partly because their bodies may not withstand the rigors of the harder practices when many very productive veteran's bodies are simply worn out by too many harsh practices that don't take their bodies into consideration.

If you're a veteran who wants to run down fly balls with your son or kids when you retire who wants to play for a coach that helps you run your legs into the ground with an unreasonable regimine that doesn't respect all of the injuries these same veterans have played through for years? Where's the respect? And all this from a 32 year old who's assumed to be the likeness of Mike Tomlin (tough, young, smart, ex Buc DB coach who wins a Super Bowl in his second year)?

Trent Dilfer and other players have commented that Raheem isn't nearly as smart as Tomlin but has a lot of energy so I guess that the Glazer's cookie cutter mold for "an up and coming bright young coach" might not come to fruition cause last time I checked, the Steelers HAVE a franchise QB and are vastly more talented than the Bucs.

Glazers: Get a stud QB and a CLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
