He was the third quarterback taken in the 2009 NFL Draft, but Kansas State QB Josh Freeman believes he is better than Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez, and he plans on proving it with the Bucs, who traded up with the Browns to select him with the 17th overall pick in the draft on Saturday.

New Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman had a Q&A session with the local media shortly after being selected by the Bucs in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft on Saturday.

Tampa Bay traded the 19th overall pick and a sixth-round selection to Cleveland in exchange for the 17th overall pick in the draft, which it used to select Freeman, who believes he was the best signal caller in this draft.

Did you know the Bucs were going to draft you?
"I knew if I was going to be around when Tampa Bay was picking that it would be a great fit. I always thought the relationship with Coach Morris was a good one. You never really know. Crazy stuff happens all the time on draft day. I'm just really happy I was able to go to a team I really wanted to go to."

Did the Bucs give you any indications they were going to draft you in conversation?
"They just said they liked me a lot and hoped it all would work out. A team really can't tell you they're going to draft you because they don't know how the draft is going to go. I'm just really glad I got to go to this team. I'm looking forward to it."

Why were the other two quarterbacks taken before you in the first round?
"I think it all comes down to the school I went to. I worked out with both those guys. I think they're really good. I'd take me over them, but I think it comes down to [Matt Stafford] going to Georgia, which is a good team in the SEC, and Mark Sanchez went to USC, which pretty much wins the Pac-10 every year. I think it came down to them going to better schools and winning more games. They're good quarterbacks and I don't take anything away from them. If I had to pick I'd pick myself."

Are you ready to play for the Bucs in the NFL right now or do you need time to develop?
"That's a tough one to answer. I have no idea. I guess we'll find out throughout camp how quickly I get acclimated to the offense. Whoever is playing the best will play. I plan on coming in and competing. I don't think you play football unless you play to be the starter. As far as me being ready to play right now we'll have to wait and find out."

Who called you to tell you the Bucs were drafting you, and what did they say?
"I think Mark Dominik tried to call me. I accidently hit the wrong button and then Raheem [Morris] called on my dad's phone and said he couldn't wait to get me to Tampa. I'm really excited about the opportunity I see in Tampa. It's a great feeling."

What did you think of Raheem Morris when you worked with him at K-State for one year?
"He brought a lot o energy to the team. Everybody on the team loved him, but at the same time everyone respected him as a coach. I think the players respond better to a coach they respect. The energy he brings, and he's a young and smart guy. His energy and personality are two things that are going to make him successful."

What do you hope to accomplish in your NFL career?
"When I'm done I wanted to be regarded as one of the best to have ever played in the game.

Do you have extra motivation dropping to 17, and being taken after Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez?
"Yeah definitely. I feel like I'm the better quarterback. They got more hype. I have the rest of my career to prove that I'm the best guy. I'm going to do everything in my power to make that so."

Does Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco's success make you believe that you can play well and lead a team as a rookie?
"Yeah they showed that a rookie quarterback can come in and the team be successful. But they also raised the bar extremely high. Those two guys came in being the only two first-round guys and taking their teams to the playoffs is something that people are going to expect this class to emulate, and I'm ready for the challenge."

What makes you better than the other two QBs?
"Obviously I know me. I feel like I have the best arm of the bunch. I feel like when it comes down to it my ability to make things happen and extend plays is the x-factor. I mean I'm a big guy, a strong guy, extremely hard to sack. My ability to avoid the sack and make something happen in the end is what I do better."

You went against [cornerback] Aqib Talib in college, have you spoken with him?
"I have not talked to him. I know he picked me off a couple of times in college. I'm looking forward to actually meeting him."

When did you decide to come out early?
"There wasn't that much thought to sticking around. Obviously when coach Snyder got the job, I pretty much all but announced that I was going to leave school, but I decided to give coach Snyder a chance and hear what he was talking about as far as playing for me in the next year. Ultimately I had to do what I thought was best for me and that was entering the draft."

When the Bucs signed Byron Leftwich, did you think that eliminated the Bucs drafting you?
"I really had no idea that they signed Leftwich until I was already in Tampa, and I think I read it in a newspaper. That doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Obviously, Tampa was a place I wanted to play, if they were looking elsewhere screw them got to find a new favorite I guess, so I went in there we talked. I got to talk to Byron, and I'm looking forward to it."

Did the supporting cast hurt your numbers and win total?
"Yeah, I'd say, I really don't want to bad mouth or bash any of my teammates," Freeman said. "They went out and worked hard, fought hard, and played to win even though there were many games when we were outmatched. I mean if you look at my numbers they were pretty similar to the guy that got taken first. He was just winning a lot more. I definitely think there were certain factors that played into my numbers, but that is all behind me, and I'm looking to go out and prove that I'm the best, and become the best."

I wonder if Michael Johnson feels he is the best DE in the draft?

Loneal - lay of Mr. Johnson. I hope the bucs have a chance to nab him in round 3 at this pace.

9:33pm, April 25, 2009

I like the confidence. Maybe he'll be the MAN. As far as I'm concerned, as long as McCown gets an honest change to start, then may the best man win.

I really wanted robert ayers with that pick

9:39pm, April 25, 2009

I'm happy with the pick, we had to draft a franchise QB at some point (15 years is a long time). At least Morris has confidence in him as a person. There shouldn't be any unexpected behavior. Seems like a smart kid with great upside.

I think it's fair to say we reached for him, and that he could very well be a bust. However, I think if there is any position that it's ok to reach for, it's a QB. Noone really knows how these kids will do in the NFL. That's why Akili Smith and Tim Couch were considered better than McNabb, or Lienhart over Cutler, or Brady in the 3rd round. Freeman could easily end up being better than Sanchez or Stafford....ya just never know.

Alot of people say why not wait till next year. Thing is, we've been waiting till next year since 1978. We finally took the leap. As fans I think we just have to get behind the choice and hope he is our Rothliesberger for the next 15 years.

Freeman has all the physical traits you could ask for. He's big enough to shrug off would be tacklers, he's mobile, his arm is one of the strongest in the NFL, and when his mechanics our right his accuracy is very good too. Now he has a year to sit back and learn from Jags, who is use to working with young QBs and did a great job with Matt Ryan.

After 31 years we finally took a QB in the first. I can't help but be excited. Now if only we could figure out a way to trade for Boldin.....

Sorry, forgot about Vinny in 87'. Still, it has been along time and I'm glad we have at least hope of a young stud Franchise QB.

So I wasn't a fan of Micheal Johnson in the first, but he is still there and I think we should trade up first thing tommorow and get him with the first pick of the 3rd round.

PR thought Bucs would take JOhnson but they were all over English. Can't beleive he went to Chargers. ALso in PR mag they projected Freeman as the QB Bucs could take in first round, so i dont think they were off the track.

If the Bucs didn't pick him, "screw them". I like the attitude.

He'll have a very good offensive line. Good backs. A Pro-bowl tight end, and should-have been Pro-Bowl wide receiver.

Let's hope our existing wide bodies fit Bates' scheme better and can step up and stop the run!

This has nothing to do with his confidence, it has to do with Defense.

If I remember right, Gruden and Allen were fired because the team the last two years faded at the end of the Seasons and they didn't react fast enough in replacing the older defensive veterans. (I was for firing Gruden and Allen because of that reason)

If i remember right, the new GM and Coach released the older veteran defensive players (Carter, Brooks, June) because we had to move on with younger players and the indications was we would use our rounds 1 & 2 to help brace up the defense.
(maybe I read in to it wrong, but so did the Pewter Report )

I have never been this negative about our team until now.
I was in Tampa Stadium starting in 1976 until I moved in 1993 to Tallahassee, but have always followed the Bucs and still will continue to do so, but this is just hard to take.

Nothing against you Freeman; it's just we needed help now.
You sound like a nice guy who in time will help us, but meanwhile the pirate ship is sinking and there is no one around to keep us a float while you learn to bail the ship out.

Carolina and Atlanta is going to beat us to death in the next couple years. I feel like we are back in the NFC Central again and I am dreaming and this just a nightmare.

We are not going to win a Superbowl next year or the year after. That is what you play for. Raheem and staff want to cast their lot with this kid long term, so be it. It's their job not mine.

Give the Bucs a chance people. You don't draft to win now, you draft to build a team. It is OBVIOUS we have MANY holes to fill on defense, but let's just assume, if only for a second, that Freeman IS the answer after all these Bucinyears?
I like Freeman and we could have done worse...I mean, look at the first two Raiders picks - the second one was REALLY a head scratcher.

10:17pm, April 25, 2009

charbeth2

Freeman was the 5th best quarterback in his conference let alone all college football. His completion percentage is below sixty and he has terrible decision making skills. Our line better be awesome or he'll get killed. Of course it won't matter because our defense has so many holes it won't be able to stop anyone. They didn't address their needs through FA because the draft was coming. How many impact DT's or DE's can you find from the 3rd round on? Those players are journeymen, players to give you depth. But no worry, we just promoted our previous depth guys to starters. Hickey doesn't have a clue and Dominick is in way over his head. Morris promised we would score touchdowns. We're going to need to because so can all our opponents.

10:19pm, April 25, 2009

I_am_not

It didn't take long to hear the naysayers now did it? Negative crap. I think we have a "retooling" year ahead of us and a good draft to fit in some missing pieces and we're back in the game. Freeman is a good pick in my humble opinion.

10:19pm, April 25, 2009

JDouble

Horse, I think the plan is to have an explosive offense that can carry us while we rebuild our defense. One defensive pick wouldn't have made much a difference next year. Now that we have our offense set, I'm sure we will rebuild our defense thru the draft over the next 2-3 years. Hopefully we start by giving our 5th round pick to the Lions to draft Michael Johnson with the first pick of the third round tommorow.

It's not all bad bro. Who knows, maybe some of our unknown guys like Black, Hayes, Mack, Moore, or Peterson will end up being really good this year.

10:21pm, April 25, 2009

bucman23

i know everybody will be whining we didnt go defense. you guys simply have to understand something, if you are convicted about a guy and have the upmost confidence he will be your franchise qb, you take him. we are in a rebuilding transition and we have drafted a lot of defense the past 2 years. now its their time to develope and emerge. everyone knocks how we've havent drafted starters but they just havent had the chance. you wanted to reach for michael johnson instead?? you guys need to understand something, THERE IS ALWAYS TALENT ON DEFENSE EVERY YEAR IN THE DRAFT . you do not get the opportunity to come across franchise qb's very often. this move was made to be our future and we are trying to establish a consistent offensive force to stay on par with our always front running defense. that is the new goal. we have a very good veteran defensive coordinator and a defensive head coach. i can say with the most confidence, we will rebuild this defense. maybe not this year, but it will get done, its a process. just have patience fellas, this was a ballsy move made in the upmost confidence. i love this kids cocyness and confidence, it isnt arrogant, but its just enough and he has the drive to be the best. i have a really good feeling about him as i predicted before the draft. this is a big step in a new direction..

I had a feeling this was going to happen..I am happy with this pick-i have to be,it's our pick. I think I was one of the first posters to mention freeman as an option for Tampa. We have had too many years of journeymen QB's and inconsistent offense, hopefully this pick will change that.
I believe there is no need to rush him to the field to prove his worth either. Give him the time and tools to grow and we may have a beast for a QB for years to come.
We need to try to grab some defensive talent in the third-Sammy Lee Hill,if he is still there..

10:24pm, April 25, 2009

jlhaynes

I am one of the few who agree with the pick.
First, if the Bucs believe he is a Franchise QB you have got to go get him. You cannot win consistently without one. Lets face it the Bucs are not a playoff team. We need to build a sustainable winner and you start with a Franchise QB. The can still get a WR CB, DT, and DE in the Draft and when veterans are released in July. Be patient.

10:26pm, April 25, 2009

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BUCS, do something to get Michael Johnson. A player like that in the third round would be excellent and greatly improve our defense!!

10:30pm, April 25, 2009

LordJim

Here's the problem. The bucs WERE a playoff team before Monte quit and sabotaged the season. Were they championship material? I don't know, but the Arizona Cardinals were a horribly officiated game away from doing it and no one gave THEM a chance as of January 1. This team was 9-3 with a couple of huge comebacks compensating for a couple of offensive abortions. Now we are rebuilding, and everyone acts like it's a good thing. It's only good if you are the Lions, or the Chiefs, and have nothing going for you. It's NOT a good thing when you CHOOSE to do it for no reason at all.

10:30pm, April 25, 2009

JDouble

Bottom line is, wether you love this pick or hate it, we just took a QB in the first round. That alone is HUGE. I don't see being negative as an option if your a Tampa fan. How can you do anything besides pray this kid is great?

10:30pm, April 25, 2009

sunrisejeff

I agree with you JDub....let's see where this kid goes before we declare him the anti-christ of the NFL. Most people were clamoring for M.J. to be taken first by the Bucs....well unless we know more than the other 32 GM's and coaches in the league that passed on him TWICE so far..that doesnt seem to be a wise pick so far. Maybe Freeman is the next Ryan Leaf....maybe Freeman is the next Big Ben....point is we don't know yet and we won't know until the kid gets a chance. If he fails at life and football then by all means as fans feel free to point your fingers at the "kool-aid" drinkers and prove your superior to us in your all knowingness. Until then I support the teams decisions....not blindly as Buc47 may suggest but as fan who supports his team. Let's not cast judgement on a guy before we've even seen him take the field.

Well, the ESPN wrap up just had that Todd McShay draft guru name the Bucs as having the most disappointing draft day. He said that he sees Freeman being 3 yrs away and having limited upside potential. In truth, he had to deliver up the Bucs after Mel picked the Raiders as having the worst draft. So, OK, maybe we had the second worst draft day. Cheer up, we're not the Raiders!

LordJim

I cant agree with you more. However playing devils advocate here. The Glazers did not give up all those draft picks and money to the Radiers just to continue having a average offense. He brought Gruden in as a changing of the Tide as Monte Kiffin got older and that would obviously be an end of an era. It would have easily been replaced with a high powered offense. Given Grudens track record (as a QB coach) and offense of guru. That sales tickets bottom line. So no matter what the team did as a whole in the GLaziers eyes Gruden underachieved.

So bring on Freeman and lets brng in a new are of alot of touchdowns and premodanna wide recievers.

For the record, that trade the Bucs made to move up two slots in the first round for only a 6th round pick was the most lop-sided trade I've ever seen. What a great move by the Bucs!

I don't care who they took, if they felt the Broncos or some other team were going to take the guy they wanted (which is very plausible), giving up a 6th rounder is peanuts.

I think we'll be fine with McCown, Leftwich or Freeman, whoever turns out to be the better QB.

I love to hear all of you experts crying we are doomed, what bad pick, etc. Don't be so disappointed when you don't get the savior for our team that you want. There were a lot of very good players available and I just smiled knowing we were going to get one. And be happy that we didn't "reach" or screw up like Oakland and Denver. The real point I got out of this decision is that the Glazers have given Dominik and Morris the latitude to rebuild. That means, while we may not win as many games as we would like, it is going to be fun to watch the Bucs play and grow!

11:32pm, April 25, 2009

JDouble you also forgot about Dilfer in '94.

I am going to give this new regime the benefit of the doubt, that they obviously know what they have on their team to make the decision to draft a franchise QB. They must have an idea that either Josh Johnson or Griese, or maybe both are not a fit into Jags offensive scheme. Therefore McCown, Leftwich are the ones that will make this offense tick for now, until Freeman is ready.

As for tomorrow, we need to obtain another 3rd round pick so we can get two great prospects on defense (probably DE Johnson and CB Keenan Lewis). In the 4th round we take the best speedy WR available, probably Tiquan Underwood. The 5th round we take the best DT that fits Bates scheme (Pryor or Hill).

My lone suggestion to get the extra 3rd round pick is to send TE Alex Smith packing along with one of our 7th rounders to the Chiefs, which is in dire straits for a young experienced TE since they traded Gonzalez away to the Falcons. We have Winslow, Stevens, and Gilmore, so Smith is expendable. For that matter maybe we can offer up Josh Johnson around to a team that may give up at least a 6th rounder if not a 5th round pick.

I know we are all moaning about how we need to invest in the defense, blah, blah...But Bates has had a 3 day mini-camp to get an idea on who will work and won't. You maybe surprised to see that DT Sims and Peterson are better suited in Bates scheme. Give them a chance. They want to win as much as we want to see them win.

Josh Freeman is our Future QB! Damn, the guy is 6'6 250 and can make any throw. Besides, we have not picked a 1st round QB since Dilfer in '94!!! Lets just wait and see what happens.

I have lived through every one of our quarterbacks from Steve Spurrier to Jeff Garcia. We have never had a quarterback who was anything beyond maybe a little better than average and the ones that were the supposed saviors came to us during a time when the team had very little talent, didn't last long and were run out of town. The offensive talent is far superior than in the past which will give Freeman a chance the others didn't have.

In spite of whether or not Josh Freeman proves out; this is a bold move that needed to be taken years ago instead of the conga line of journeyman QB's and late round picks that have passed through here since Trent Dilfer. This team has been constantly changing its' leadership on offense. It's time we stopped the musical chairs and put one man on the hot seat.

It seems people were looking for us to draft a defensive end or defensive tackle at #19 but I sure didn't see anyone there who, as a rookie, was going to improve the defense so much that we make another Superbowl run with Luke, Byron, Brian or the other Josh behind center. It's a lot easier to find a pass rusher than it is a potential franchise quarterback. Pressure on the opposing QB can be generated a lot of ways.

The defensive side is obviously in a state of flux, but it is not completely devoid of talent, some of which has been waiting on the sidelines for an opportunity the past few years. But even on defense, we were able to make due with a collection of average linemen the past few years and been somewhat successful until injuries took their toll last season.

I doubt many of us have seen Josh Freeman play a game or know anything about him other than what they have read in a draft publication. My sense is that here is a guy who had to be "the man" at Kansas State starting as a true freshman and attempt to carry his team. Neither Stafford or Sanchez was put in that role.

I'd rather take a chance to "gamble on greatness" than merely take a mediocre defensive player because it would be less scrutinized.

8:09am, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

Horse - I'm with you man. I want to cheer for the Bucs but that pick was just hard to make sense as a Bucs fan.

I think most hard-core guys on here are always blind-sided with anything the Bucs do and view it as positive. What they fail to see is there's a very good chance this guy isn't ready until year 3 or later. And honestly, I could see him having a similar career as Luke McCown, not being fully ready until year 5-6.

Freeman is going to get a chance to start right away, either year 1, or probably more like year 2, but for him to turn out to prove everyone wrong is a BIG IF.....

I mean, everyone had this guy (talent-wise) as a 2nd/3rd round grade. Mel Kiper had him at #50...The draft had him rated as a player at a C and D grade. It's hard to stomach if you ask me, and I totally see everyone's issues with it.

I know PR will spin it as positive and so will the team, and most fans, because they have too, but this pick left me scratching my head as to the timing of the selection.

Reach is an understatement here. Our team is not ready for a guy to start in 3-4 years. I'm glad to see Dominik and Morris are confident in their abilities, but one thing I've noticed with first time head coaches, and examples are all over the place, they always seem to not worry about big risks in the draft and usually end up at some point within the 3-5 year timeframe, end up getting fired.

I truly hope that's not the case here, but taking a guy at #17, with no 2nd round pick, no 6th round pick now, you are basically saying our future henges on this player. If it doesn't work, they're gonna be fired.

I think more experienced GM's that looked at Tampa's roster would have recommended going in a different direction. IMO, you build the team up like the Ravens and Steelers, then you go out and get your rookie QB. You don't do it in reverse order.

That's the problem I've got with this pick as a fan.

This pick STUNNED me!! I was sick at my stomach for several hours.

That being said, Freeman is now a Buccaneer and probably will start now later than the 2010 season. As a Buc fan first and foremost, I MUST root for him and WILL NOT sit back and wait for him to fail. As has been said above by another poster, Freeman is in a much better position than any first round QB pick we have ever made. In the past, our first round QBshad a poor offensive line, no real quality backs and no real quality receivers. In FREEMAN'S case, he has a qualtiy young offensive line to protect him AND open holes for the running game so he won't have to be the the whole offense. He also will have a young probowl quality TE, plus another outstanding pass receiving TE and a probowl qualtiy WR. This pieces have NEVER been in place for a 1st round QB selection for us before.

I am now going to move on from stunned and sick to rooting for him and looking at the positives in his game.

I am on board BECAUSE he is a Buc now!!

If he really did come out in the press and say that the Bucs told him that the signing of Leftwich was just a smoke screen, then he is really a piece of s**t. He is confident maybe to an extreme. I don't trust anyone that will throw another player or his team mates under the bus. He had better be good and learn how to be a team player and keep his mouth shut. I love the Bucs but I think they made a mistake on this guy.
