The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded up three spots in the fourth round with the Dallas Cowboys to select USC defensive end Kyle Moore. He notched 30 tackles and five sacks in 2008. Tampa Bay traded one of its seventh-round picks to Dallas to move up and select Moore.

The Buccaneers went defense for the second straight pick on Sunday, trading up in the fourth round to select USC defensive end Kyle Moore.

“Obviously, it’s great to be a Buccaneer right now. It’s just an awesome feeling I have,” Moore said. “I got a call earlier in the week and the coach told me he was going to come get me. I didn’t know when, but I watched it for the first four rounds and then they traded up to get me. It’s all good. I’m happy.”

Earlier in the day, the Bucs used their third-round pick to draft Texas DT Roy Miller.

Tampa Bay traded one of its three seventh-round picks (No. 229 overall) to Dallas to move up three spots to select Moore with the 117th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-5, 272-pound Moore could be considered a younger version of Kevin Carter, who spent the past two seasons with the Bucs before hitting the free agent market this offseason.

Moore joins Gaines Adams, Stylez G. White, Jimmy Wilkerson and Louis Holmes in Tampa Bay's stable of defensive ends in defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme, which is being implemented after the departure of Monte Kiffin and his Cover 2 system.

“Man it is honor to play on that defense because I watched that defense growing up, and watched the guys that have came out of there,” Moore said. “From linebackers, to corners, to defensive linemen. Simeon Rice when he was there, watching him, and all the great linebackers. I liked watching all the guys on Tampa Bay. I know they had stars like Derrick Brooks. It is a great defense and I would love to be apart of it. Hopefully I can help that defense to be aggressive and dominant.”

As a senior, Moore recorded 30 tackles (nine for a loss) and a team-leading five sacks in en route to being named USC's Most Inspirational Player. However, Moore, who has played left and right end, acknowledges he has plenty of room for improvement.

“I know I need to work on the run. I need to work on that and get better at that, but I’m pretty confident that I can play the run," said Moore. "I just have to work on it. Everybody has something that they need to work on, but I know I can get to that quarterback pretty well, so I’m okay with that.

“I guess (sacks) are big with the league, but compared to my sack total (in 2007) with two and then last year I had five – and I had a sack and a half taken away from me during the season. Then I got one in the Senior Bowl. Guys have to remember that in our defense we only have 50-60 plays in a game. I’m not making any excuses, but compared to teams that have 90 plays, we just don’t have a lot of plays to get to the quarterback. A lot of teams didn’t want to throw against us. They were just running the ball. That’s probably the reason for my sack total. There just wasn’t a guy that had double-digit sacks on my defense this year.”

During the offseason, Moore ran a 4.81 time in the 40-yard dash, bench pressed 225 pounds 22 times and posted a 30.5-inch vertical jump.

Moore, who was born in Germany and lived overseas as part of a military family, started 24 of the 50 games he played in during his collegiate career. He notched 76 tackles, seven sacks, four recovered fumbles, two interceptions and eight passes defensed.

I think he'll be good for what we need him to do, which is play opposite Adams and hold up against the run. Obviously I would like a guy that can stop the run and rush the passer, but in the 4th round beggars can't be choosers.

At least he's coming from a major school and isn't some developmental project from a small school like G. Peterson and L. Brackins.

Nice pick.

Would be nice to find another defensive tackle or a CB in the rest of the draft.

A TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!

I like the pick. Was hoping for sidbury but im still glad we get the DE position locked up. It sounds to me like he was overshadowed by the linebackers but was still prety good. Mike Mickens is still on the board! GO BUCS!

Not sure if he is suited for our new defense. Scouting reports suggest he is more suited for a 3-4 style defense. But what do I know... I am just excited for next season.

Could use a mean streak like Lawrence Sidbury?!!...seems like Bates and crew want to keep replicating the Jason Taylor mold. Maybe Roy Miller can school Kyle on playing mean, really wanting to kill the quarterback, but from the DE position. Good pedigree from Pete Carroll though.

This guy was picked for potential, not production. Cross your finfgers and hope good coaching turns him into something. I wouldn'nt expect him to start this year.

It will be fun to watch Peterson, Dre Moore, Miller, and Kyle Moore compete to be starters. We have alot of young guys on the D-line now. Hopefully at least one of them steps up and becomes a real force for us.

Go Bucs!

guys i absolutely love this pick! he was one of my more underrated players in this draft. he played in usc as more of a 3-4 defensive end and still managed 5 sacks. he reminds me more of antonio smith. still, great value in the 4th round. sidburry IMO was iverrated and it obviously showed by slipping to the 4th round, so i was happy we went this way instead.

Overall I think this was an ok draft. We got a QB in the first round which is very exciting. Sad to see we didn't get back into the second round, but we got a DT and DE, so that's good. Now if we can sign Leroy Hill we will be just fine on defense next year. CB is still a weakness, but maybe Mack will end up being really good.

Also, can we trade Alex Smith and next years second rounder to Arizonz for Boldin? How amazing would it be to watch the Bucs have an explosive offense for once? I'd piss my pants if we managed to get Boldin.

Today is looking up. At least we are adding depth to our defensive line. We still need a CB for depth there.
Go Bucs

This guy will never make the Pro Bowl. He's just another mediocre pick from inexperienced coaches.

Meh....I doubt anyone else drfated will even make the team. Love to wrong, but there doesn't really seem to be any good quality players left in the 5th round of this draft.

"inexperienced coaches" at USC?

mikens is still available, i think chuckie meant our coaches.

I like what we've done today. I would love to see Mickens. Does anybody think we'll go after Jason Taylor?

Again I'll ask, "What about Quan Cosby in the 5th?"

I think it would be a big help for our team to get a guy like this in the slot...

Bucs reached for a DE as they felt they needed to have one to replace Carter. This guy seems to do nothing great but plays run and pass ok. Styles (Greg) White is not a run stopper at all at defensive end, so I think they felt they needed to get a guy who could play early downs at DE to stop run with Carter gone. This guy seems to fit that bill.

Bucfan47 - would love Crosby as well, but I smell CB in round 5.

Love the Moore pick. While first round USC guys tend to be overrated and / or busts (Leinart, M. Williams, R. Bush) - the mid-round picks out of USC usually deliver more than expected due to great coaching in a Pro-style system. Very glad they didn't reach on another small-school project at D-line. There are enough of those already on the roster.

Looks like Mickens will be there for a round 5 steal.

nope, Fulton, Xavier OT 6'4" 302 Illinios???

Mickens must have something going against him to not have been drafted yet this late in the draft. I still can't figure this pick out? Who the hell is he and why wasn't Murtha taken instead?

3:10pm, April 26, 2009

bucman23

guys, again i like this pick a lot. he is a perfect zone blocking value, i just read the scouting report on him and he is listed as a 3-4 round pick who could have been much higher if it wasnt for injuries last season. the goal of this draft was to land our qb of the future, and fortify both our lines. skill positions can always be found and there are still some in free agency. xavier will probably replace trueblood after this year, seeing as his contract is up and he is a bad fit for zone blocking IMO he's too clumsy and not quick enough.

Not crazy about Fulton. Not that he might not be good for zbs, but I would have liked to have seen another D pick - CB specifically.

3:20pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

CB is still a glaring need and they are running out of selections..This is scary.
