Tampa Bay Drafts OT Fulton In Fifth Round

Illinois LT Xavier Fulton began his college career as a defensive lineman (Illinois)

The Bucs invested their fifth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft in Illinois offensive tackle Xavier Fulton. The 6-foot-4, 302-pound Fulton began his collegiate career as a defensive lineman before moving to the offensive side as a sophomore. He started 25 games at left tackle for Illinois, but could serve as a swing tackle for the Bucs.

After addressing two needs on the defensive side of the ball to start the second day of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went back to the offensive side of the ball in the fifth round, selecting Illinois offensive tackle Xavier Fulton.

“This is a dream come true – to be able to play professional football,” Fulton said. “I actually didn’t talk a whole lot with the Bucs before hand. I had a few interviews with them at the Senior Bowl and a few talks with them at the Combine. But other than that, not a lot of communication.”

Fulton is a former defensive lineman who started 10 games before switching in his sophomore year to offensive tackle, where he went on to start all 25 games he played in. Fulton also registered 149 knockdowns/blocks and 15 touchdown-resulting blocks.

“I made the switch in spring ball in 2007,” Fulton said. “It was a little difficult at first getting to adjust. The biggest thing I had trouble with was pass blocking. It’s totally different from the way I was taught defense. Defense compared to playing offensive line is pretty easy. It’s chase the ballcarrier, chase the ballcarrier – you can’t be wrong going to tackle someone. On offense, if you make one mistake the entire play is busted and it’s lost yardage. It was pretty difficult at first, but once I got the hang of it over the past two seasons, I’ve felt pretty comfortable with it."

The 6-foot-4, 301-pound Fulton is considered an incredible athlete. He posted a 5.09 time in the 40-yard dash, 29-inch vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times. In fact, Fulton ranked in the top 10 at his position in five out of the six workouts he participated in at the NFL Combine.

“The only extra hard part of the training was dealing with the shoulder,” Fulton said of his right shoulder injury. “I couldn’t fully bench press what I used to, and it was difficult trying to get the strength back during the training process. After working at it for a couple of months I got the strength back in my shoulders, and I got a pretty good bench press number. A lot of my good numbers I put up was from training with Kurt Hester at D-One in Nashville. He taught me a lot of good techniques, a lot of tips that helped with the numbers.”

Despite being hindered the right shoulder ailment as a senior that required surgery in February, Fulton started 12 games for Illinois and earned the Bruce Capel Award for displaying the most courage, dedication and accomplishment.

Although he played left tackle at Illinois, Fulton, who was a member of the North team at Senior Bowl, has the size, power and athletic ability to be a swing tackle for the Buccaneers.

“I’m a pretty athletic guy," said Fulton. "I’m very fast. I like to get up to the next level very quickly. If you get your linemen on the second or third level, obviously you have done something pretty well and usually it’s a big yardage gain.”

Fulton joins Donald Penn, Jeremy Trueblood, James Lee and Julius Wilson in Tampa Bay’s stable of offensive tackles. He said he hopes to one day become a starting tackle for the Buccaneers.

“I think that is the attitude that you have to have if you are going to last long or at all at this level,” said Fulton. “I know I’m going to have to compete. There are men who look at this as a way to feed their family. Obviously, I’m a 23-year-old kid coming in just trying to learn everything. I’m going in with the aspect that I’m going to learn and be a much better offensive lineman, and hopefully compete for a position.”

wow we are kinda thin at the tackle position. wasnt a fan of this pick when it happened but its starting to make sense now.

I was so glad we made this pick. I quietly held my breath that Trueblood or Penn wouldn't get hurt last year, because who did we have behind them?

I wanted CB Mike Mickens, but if we didn't take him I truly wanted an OT. I kinda wanted Meredith out of South Carolina, but I saw Fulton play this past season when I was scouting out CB Vontae Davis and I was impressed.

Go Bucs! Keep it up!

I am puzzled at this selection. Hmm?
Why this pick? I know Pewter Report you called him to be picked in the late rounds, but this was before you actually thought we would draft an offensive player in the first round.

So we didn't have a back up need at CB or at WR for depth reasons?

As far as I am concerned the draft is over even with two No. 7's which probably won't make the team.

Since I am trying to be positive at this point, Iwill just shut up.
Which will make some happy. i am trying to be positive about this draft. I am trying.

Go Bucs

Solid pick again. Athletic prospect who will fit into the zone blocking scheme. All his negatives are related to inexperience and poor technique -- all that can be coached away.

Some of the criticism on here is just silly...

Trading back into the 6th round, using the 7th's could have accomplished this. TIRED of hearing about short, recycled CB Mack, we could have replicated somewhat the successful model of Talib with Brandon Underwood from Cincinnati, good reports on him, or what about Domonique Johnson?!! CB is a more important issue THIS YEAR AND NEXT than OT Dominick....

Don't we have Lee and Zuttack already as back ups at this position? Is this a real need?

Let's home the Bucs address the CB and WR positions after the draft by using Alex Smith, Josh Johnson and Griese as trade bait. This is going to be an interesting year starting with training camp with all the scheme changes and new players. I'm excited but not expecting many wins. Here's hoping that Josh Freeman is the real deal.

What a great draft! We should be awesome in 2012!
Lets see: in 2010 top five pick, in 2011 top 5 pick.

FLBoyInDallas

Zuttah is a guard, not a tackle. Lee can play both guard and tackle. We needed quality depth and we needed that depth to include athletes who can be effective in the zone blocking scheme. Great pick.

By the way, if you check walterfootball.com you'll see they have all four of the Bucs picks so far with a grade of "A". All of the experts so far have the Bucs draft graded very good. A lot of fans just get emotional and don't really understand the game.

rastaman...right on. You nailed it. I feel sorry for the wives/girlfriends of people who have such negative, complaining personality types. They make other people's lives miserable. Go away whiners!

This draft is an F. We have more QB's than CB's. Kyle Moore is a STIFF. This team is DONE!

4:15pm, April 26, 2009

ir8toldman

He would be just fresh raw meat for any defensemen if he came in for a starter. Needs to be coached up a bit first, but it was a nice pick ...for the future.

The only F is your level of fan support. You are a stiff. We have more loser so-called "fans" than we have QB's. How ya like them apples? *lol*

I like the pick. I also like Mike Mickens, but as of this posting (pick 189), he stil has not been picked. We have 217, so here's hoping...

We needed another tackle. We don't know what is going to happen with Penn going into next season, and this kid could end up being a steal in the 5th. He hasn't been an OT for long, and that leads to most of his negatives.

Good pick.

4:41pm, April 26, 2009

Okay for you fans that are dissappointed we didn't take a CB with this pick, due some research. There are always at least 5 O-lineman on the field on the time but no more than 4 CB's, more often only 3 CB's. It's much easier to have a good O-line prospect fall through the cracks than a CB since these scouts have some many schools to cover.

If you look at the number of starting O-linemen in the league that were drafted high versus CB's you'll find more CB's taken in the early rounds. There's a much higher chance that if we had taken a CB in the 5th round he would have struck out versus a O-lineman.

You can argue whether we should have taken one with the 1st or 3rd pick, but frankly we have 3 starting calibur CB's (yes, Mack is worthy of starting at nickel). We didn't have 2 starting calibur DT's nor did we have 2 starting calibur DE's.

Maybe the Bucs will bring back the creamcicle orange jerseys and the retrofit to the good ole days will be complete - double digit losses are just over the horizon.

Hey guys, I just checked, and Greg Carr, WR, FSU is still available. What do you think? 6'6" 216. Just throw it up there and let him catch it. Can't be any worse than what we've got already.

would have rather gone defense w/ the first pick.and seen what Luke can do! At least theres 3 QBs better then FREEMAN available next year! would you rather have FREEMAN OR TEBOW!! PINKSTOB.this draft will make a non drinker DRINK!!

I think you guys need to find a new team now if you want to be so negative cause it is so annoying!! What kind of fans are you?? The season hasnt even begun yet and there is so much complaining. Give things a chance to play out please. Let it go on record that I am completely behind R Morris and the bucs.
BUCS FOR LIFE BABY!!!!!

LordJim

Hey, you get what you asked for. In this case, the fans asked for Gruden to be laughing at us in the NFLN booth and Allen to be off killing puppies somewhere. Now we get it. Good draft for a team that wants to be competitive in 2012, if there's even a league. Until then, hope that the Rays turn it around.

5:25pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

What a bunch of negative crybaby "fans" You guys cry over every move the Bucs make. Give it a rest already. It's the 5th fucking round. You take the best available player on your board PERIOD. Some of you folks are just clueless and about as loyal as a stray cat. If you can't be optimistic and hopefull thru the tough times than bugger off. We don't need you. Hard to believe so many folks will pay a subscribtion just to come on here and say how much the Bucs suck. Get a life and go be a "fan" for some other team. Friggin nubs.

5:37pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

That's right Double. Why aren't these people more upbeat? I can't figure it out.

We have got our future Hall of Fame QB that will start in 2011. I don't understand why guys are so upset....Hmmmm

I also can't figure out why the experts are giving us a bad draft grade...It's weird.

5:47pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

PR - Are you sure you guys didn't pick the draft for the New England Patriots?

5:53pm, April 26, 2009

1bucfanjeff

JDouble, you're absolutely correct. All the people that are complaining about the picks must not have had veto power in the war room. Oh wait...there not in the war room.

I completely understand that people get emotional about the bucs and picks - but there isn't one of us on here qualified to be on the Bucs staff.

Let's see what the picks can do...

6:02pm, April 26, 2009

Horse

JDOUBLE, some of us are upset because we thought the Bucs would not reach for players after learning our lessons last year with DJ at No. 2 I just think that Josh Freeman was a huge reach at No. 17. Look I sure hope I am mistaken and I really want us to win, win ,win! I hate losing. I saw to many years in the past of that and I am concerned that we just went backwards, not forwards. That doesn't mean I have given up on the Bucs; it just means I am troubled by some of our picks.
That my position. That's not negative or positive.
For me this has not been an overall good draft. I give it a "D"
Yes I know that only time will tell and I sure hope I was wrong.

Go Bucs!

6:10pm, April 26, 2009

1bucfanjeff

We went backwards right when they started to "retool". Everything they do now is effort to get better. Some of you make it seem that they are trying to fail. Come on.

6:15pm, April 26, 2009

JDouble

I get being emotional. I get being upset that jnone of the guys you had hoped for got drafted by us. What I don't get is people that are supposedly fans declaring this a horrible draft and Freeman a bust when we haven't seen any of these kids play a single down in the NFL. It's just ridiculous.

The Freeman pick is scary as hell. I been saying draft Freeman for 6 months now, but I was saying he'd be a good second round pick....so I'm right there with everyone else in being uncomfortable with the pick. Thing is it's done. Noone knows if Freeman will be the next Akili Smith or the Next Peyton Manning, so why not be positive and hope for the best?

As far as the "experts" go....screw them. They are wrong more than they are right. All the "expert" mock drfats got blown apart. These guys are like the weather man. They gather information and give opinions, but they don't really know whats gonna happen.

I see it as this offseason we franchised the best WR that Tampa has had in a very long time, we brought in an Elite young Tight end in Winslow, we fortified our RB corps with Ward, and we just drafted a QB in the first round for the 4th time in team history that might end up being our John Elway for the next 15 years. Put all that with a great young O-line and I am very excited about our offense.

Defense is going to take a few years to be elite again, but now that we are set on offense I'm sure we will consentrate on D in the draft and we will get there. There was no great defensive playmaker at 19 that would have instantly made us great on defense, so why not go for the QB of the future if you believe he is the one? If we would have listened to the "experts" we could have drafted Mike Johnson who ended up going in the 3rd round.

It's all a crap shoot in the end. I suppose I just rather be positive and believe in the new staff, while others like to think they are smarter than all the GMs in the NFL and the new staff is completely incompetent. I like to give people a chance before I write them off as idiot losers.

6:27pm, April 26, 2009

Horse

1bucfanjeff, Okay I was wrong; we get an "A" for how we drafted because we are in a "retool" Season.
Go Bucs!

6:28pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

JDouble - It's because we see teams like Oakland draft and you better believe some fans are more in-tune with what's going on than owners like Al Davis. That organization is a train wreck. There draft was horrible and for the timing I have to say that our draft was no better than a C-.

The reason you can't put it ahead of that is because we had no business drafting Freeman at #17. Our team is not ready for him. It's no different than what the Lions done. I love the Lions draft, aside from Stafford, but they are in no position to draft Stafford and neither was our team. The difference is that there's no question Freeman was more of a reach than Stafford or Sanchez.

He may turn out to be the better PRO, in the end, but IN THE END is the key phrase to write down.

Sanchez stands the best chance of having the most success because he went to the most READY team now. Stafford is at least 4-5 years away from having a competitive team. They just are. And IMO so are we.

I have a problem with the timing and I think there's a strong possibility that Dominik and Morris have just drafted a kid that IF he turns out to be successful, they may not be around to coach him by the time that day comes.

7:26pm, April 26, 2009

bucfan47

Horse - lol...I've never understood teams and coaches that draft for the future. It's stupid IMO.

Why draft a project that by the time he's ready to start, you're no longer around to be the coach?

I know they have very high hopes for this kid, and I commend their confidence in this team overall, but boy, I think they are badly mistaken if they think this defense will be able to remotely hold anyone off the scoreboard this season...I mean, how can they stop anyone they play?

I'm being serious. Is there any team on the Bucs schedule that's not going to score over 20 points? I'm having trouble finding them. Maybe Miami...Maybe..

I still think they screwed up by not drafting Peria Jerry. Bucs fans will soon find out just what a force this kid can be when he's paired with John Abraham in Atlanta. I still can't believe they passed on teaming him up with Gaines Adams..

But, it's there job to lose, not mine.
