Tampa Bay Drafts OT Fulton In Fifth Round |
![]() Illinois LT Xavier Fulton began his college career as a defensive lineman (Illinois) |
The Bucs invested their fifth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft in Illinois offensive tackle Xavier Fulton. The 6-foot-4, 302-pound Fulton began his collegiate career as a defensive lineman before moving to the offensive side as a sophomore. He started 25 games at left tackle for Illinois, but could serve as a swing tackle for the Bucs.
After addressing two needs on the defensive side of the ball to start the second day of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went back to the offensive side of the ball in the fifth round, selecting Illinois offensive tackle Xavier Fulton.
“This is a dream come true – to be able to play professional football,” Fulton said. “I actually didn’t talk a whole lot with the Bucs before hand. I had a few interviews with them at the Senior Bowl and a few talks with them at the Combine. But other than that, not a lot of communication.”
Fulton is a former defensive lineman who started 10 games before switching in his sophomore year to offensive tackle, where he went on to start all 25 games he played in. Fulton also registered 149 knockdowns/blocks and 15 touchdown-resulting blocks.
“I made the switch in spring ball in 2007,” Fulton said. “It was a little difficult at first getting to adjust. The biggest thing I had trouble with was pass blocking. It’s totally different from the way I was taught defense. Defense compared to playing offensive line is pretty easy. It’s chase the ballcarrier, chase the ballcarrier – you can’t be wrong going to tackle someone. On offense, if you make one mistake the entire play is busted and it’s lost yardage. It was pretty difficult at first, but once I got the hang of it over the past two seasons, I’ve felt pretty comfortable with it."
The 6-foot-4, 301-pound Fulton is considered an incredible athlete. He posted a 5.09 time in the 40-yard dash, 29-inch vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times. In fact, Fulton ranked in the top 10 at his position in five out of the six workouts he participated in at the NFL Combine.
“The only extra hard part of the training was dealing with the shoulder,” Fulton said of his right shoulder injury. “I couldn’t fully bench press what I used to, and it was difficult trying to get the strength back during the training process. After working at it for a couple of months I got the strength back in my shoulders, and I got a pretty good bench press number. A lot of my good numbers I put up was from training with Kurt Hester at D-One in Nashville. He taught me a lot of good techniques, a lot of tips that helped with the numbers.”
Despite being hindered the right shoulder ailment as a senior that required surgery in February, Fulton started 12 games for Illinois and earned the Bruce Capel Award for displaying the most courage, dedication and accomplishment.
Although he played left tackle at Illinois, Fulton, who was a member of the North team at Senior Bowl, has the size, power and athletic ability to be a swing tackle for the Buccaneers.
“I’m a pretty athletic guy," said Fulton. "I’m very fast. I like to get up to the next level very quickly. If you get your linemen on the second or third level, obviously you have done something pretty well and usually it’s a big yardage gain.”
Fulton joins Donald Penn, Jeremy Trueblood, James Lee and Julius Wilson in Tampa Bay’s stable of offensive tackles. He said he hopes to one day become a starting tackle for the Buccaneers.
“I think that is the attitude that you have to have if you are going to last long or at all at this level,” said Fulton. “I know I’m going to have to compete. There are men who look at this as a way to feed their family. Obviously, I’m a 23-year-old kid coming in just trying to learn everything. I’m going in with the aspect that I’m going to learn and be a much better offensive lineman, and hopefully compete for a position.”

I wanted CB Mike Mickens, but if we didn't take him I truly wanted an OT. I kinda wanted Meredith out of South Carolina, but I saw Fulton play this past season when I was scouting out CB Vontae Davis and I was impressed.
Go Bucs! Keep it up!

Why this pick? I know Pewter Report you called him to be picked in the late rounds, but this was before you actually thought we would draft an offensive player in the first round.
So we didn't have a back up need at CB or at WR for depth reasons?
As far as I am concerned the draft is over even with two No. 7's which probably won't make the team.
Since I am trying to be positive at this point, Iwill just shut up.
Which will make some happy. i am trying to be positive about this draft. I am trying.
Go Bucs

By the way, if you check walterfootball.com you'll see they have all four of the Bucs picks so far with a grade of "A". All of the experts so far have the Bucs draft graded very good. A lot of fans just get emotional and don't really understand the game.

We needed another tackle. We don't know what is going to happen with Penn going into next season, and this kid could end up being a steal in the 5th. He hasn't been an OT for long, and that leads to most of his negatives.
Good pick.

If you look at the number of starting O-linemen in the league that were drafted high versus CB's you'll find more CB's taken in the early rounds. There's a much higher chance that if we had taken a CB in the 5th round he would have struck out versus a O-lineman.
You can argue whether we should have taken one with the 1st or 3rd pick, but frankly we have 3 starting calibur CB's (yes, Mack is worthy of starting at nickel). We didn't have 2 starting calibur DT's nor did we have 2 starting calibur DE's.

We have got our future Hall of Fame QB that will start in 2011. I don't understand why guys are so upset....Hmmmm
I also can't figure out why the experts are giving us a bad draft grade...It's weird.

I completely understand that people get emotional about the bucs and picks - but there isn't one of us on here qualified to be on the Bucs staff.
Let's see what the picks can do...

That my position. That's not negative or positive.
For me this has not been an overall good draft. I give it a "D"
Yes I know that only time will tell and I sure hope I was wrong.
Go Bucs!

The Freeman pick is scary as hell. I been saying draft Freeman for 6 months now, but I was saying he'd be a good second round pick....so I'm right there with everyone else in being uncomfortable with the pick. Thing is it's done. Noone knows if Freeman will be the next Akili Smith or the Next Peyton Manning, so why not be positive and hope for the best?
As far as the "experts" go....screw them. They are wrong more than they are right. All the "expert" mock drfats got blown apart. These guys are like the weather man. They gather information and give opinions, but they don't really know whats gonna happen.
I see it as this offseason we franchised the best WR that Tampa has had in a very long time, we brought in an Elite young Tight end in Winslow, we fortified our RB corps with Ward, and we just drafted a QB in the first round for the 4th time in team history that might end up being our John Elway for the next 15 years. Put all that with a great young O-line and I am very excited about our offense.
Defense is going to take a few years to be elite again, but now that we are set on offense I'm sure we will consentrate on D in the draft and we will get there. There was no great defensive playmaker at 19 that would have instantly made us great on defense, so why not go for the QB of the future if you believe he is the one? If we would have listened to the "experts" we could have drafted Mike Johnson who ended up going in the 3rd round.
It's all a crap shoot in the end. I suppose I just rather be positive and believe in the new staff, while others like to think they are smarter than all the GMs in the NFL and the new staff is completely incompetent. I like to give people a chance before I write them off as idiot losers.

The reason you can't put it ahead of that is because we had no business drafting Freeman at #17. Our team is not ready for him. It's no different than what the Lions done. I love the Lions draft, aside from Stafford, but they are in no position to draft Stafford and neither was our team. The difference is that there's no question Freeman was more of a reach than Stafford or Sanchez.
He may turn out to be the better PRO, in the end, but IN THE END is the key phrase to write down.
Sanchez stands the best chance of having the most success because he went to the most READY team now. Stafford is at least 4-5 years away from having a competitive team. They just are. And IMO so are we.
I have a problem with the timing and I think there's a strong possibility that Dominik and Morris have just drafted a kid that IF he turns out to be successful, they may not be around to coach him by the time that day comes.

Why draft a project that by the time he's ready to start, you're no longer around to be the coach?
I know they have very high hopes for this kid, and I commend their confidence in this team overall, but boy, I think they are badly mistaken if they think this defense will be able to remotely hold anyone off the scoreboard this season...I mean, how can they stop anyone they play?
I'm being serious. Is there any team on the Bucs schedule that's not going to score over 20 points? I'm having trouble finding them. Maybe Miami...Maybe..
I still think they screwed up by not drafting Peria Jerry. Bucs fans will soon find out just what a force this kid can be when he's paired with John Abraham in Atlanta. I still can't believe they passed on teaming him up with Gaines Adams..
But, it's there job to lose, not mine.
