The Tampa Bay Buccaneers invested their first of two seventh-round picks (No. 217 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft in Western Michigan cornerback E.J. Biggers on Sunday.

The 5-foot-11 180-pound Biggers is a player that has been on Tampa Bay’s radar since earlier in the offseason. He visited the Bucs on April 2.

A native of Miami Beach, Fla., Biggers ran a 4.35 40-yard dash at his pro day workout, where he turned in a 36-inch vertical jump. He’s a physical corner with good man coverage skills, which is required in new defensive coordinator Jim Bates’ scheme.

Biggers recorded 136 career tackles, six tackles for loss, seven interceptions and 19 passes defensed. He was overshadowed by Western Michigan safety Louis Delmas, who selected by Detroit with the first pick of the second round on Saturday.

A three-year starter, Delmas is considered a great athlete and has spent time on offense, throwing a pair of passes off reverses, including a 76-yard touchdown against Cincinnati in 2006. He also blocked a kick, returned six punts for 48 yards, returned 11 kicks for 170 yards and is expected to initially compete for a roster spot on special teams while he learns Tampa Bay’s defensive scheme.

Biggers joins Aqib Talib, Ronde Barber, Elbert Mack, Greg Fassit, Kyle Arrington and Torrie Cox in Tampa Bay’s stable of cornerbacks.

PR hit on this guy in their final mock draft and I think it's a solid pick for a 7th round guy

chuckbville

ran a 4.35 at his pro day. good a jamming receivers and turning to run coverage.

wooleycollins

is he better than mickens?

In about 10 more picks we'll find out if Mickens joins him...

This guy sounds like he has a shot to make the team this year since we only have 3 CB's we know we can depend on. Maybe 4 if you include T. Cox on special teams.

bpirate

Seems like a good pick here. If he makes the team and plays well he will be a steal.

Hopefully this guy along with E Mack get the opportunity to make Barber earn a starting spot in a defense that features a new coverage scheme.
Reynolds and Flynn, do you guys think these two young guys will get a shot at battling Ronde for a starting position in Bates new defense?

Well, Dallas drafted Mike Mickens. But from what I read he's not good at bump-and-run coverage. He was more of a zone guy. I liked him anyway, but maybe that's why Bates didn't value him over Biggers and some of these other guys.

It's a couple of picks before our last pick. I'd like to see a safety who or a WLB, either of which could play special teams.

JDouble

I'd like to see us sign Leroy Hill before the day is thru.

I expect Ronde and Aquib are the starting corners. Ronde earned his spot. Tjak, Sabby, Talib please stay healthy. Mack is a great nickle. Look to the line to defend the corners.

This guy doesn't even have a bio on NFL.COM...That is hilarious..

Sammie Stroughter is a tough little WR. Wes Welker type of player. Maybe he'll surprise everyone and be that checkdown guy for 4-6 yards like Hillard has been for the past several years.

Double, no that's Quan Crosby. I have no idea why they liked him over Crosby.

Stroughter ran almost a 4.6 40 at the combine.

I honestly don't see how biggers even makes the team.

I think Torrie Cox can beat this kid out.

And PR - I think you guys got more picks right for New England than you did for us.

so everyone ran bad at the combine. he ran a 4.45 at his pro day and he was a very productive. 1000 yards receiving and is a playmaker, by the way cosby's like 27.

Nice tape on the guy...

Hope this guy makes it and they show T. Cox the door!

7:28pm, April 26, 2009

I think Cox can beat him out honestly.

Not trying to be negative - but why is an athletic, physical - Man Corner with 4.35 speed still avialble in the 7th round?

9:06pm, April 26, 2009

manilavanilla

because he went to Western Michigan

Mickens had mcl and acl surgery. It cost him big time. The Bucs medical staff probably gave them imput. Mickens went to Dallas in round 6. If not for the injury Mickens was projected to be a 3rd or 4th round pick. Tough break for him. He is a gamer.

Pewterpain

Problem is Cox can't stay healthy. I have a feeling that everyone of the picks this weekend will make the final roster. Even if it comes down to salary decisions.

bucfan47

Pewterpain - With the talent on this team overall, especially the backup positions, you could be close. But is that saying anything? Really?

If a 5th, 6th, or two 7th rounders make your squad, is that really saying alot.

There are teams out there that drafted players that late that realistically have no shot at making their squads. It's about talent and depth, and some teams just have alot of talent across the board.

We don't have that problem across the board, especially on the D-Line which I'm still somewhere between utterly and bumfounded that we went the way we did in this draft on defense.

It's hard to understand what's going on...I'm trying, but again, between Tampa, Oakland, and Denver, I got nothing.

And I'm starting to lose faith in PR just a little bit. I love the truth and honesty in their reporting but they go along with too many selections....

And something else, I have no reason whatsoever to promote Sirius Radio and the NFL channel 124 but let me say this...If you're a football fan and you don't have Sirius Radio, for the past five years you have literally missed out. I would encourage all of you to not walk, but RUN to the nearest store and get one. The best football talk, the most knowledgeable, the most indepth I've ever seen in my life. And that's not being biased. Plus I would love to hear some of you call in from time to time. There are not near as many Bucs fans as anyone else.
