Bucs Place FB Storer On IR

The Buccaneers have placed reserve fullback Byron Storer on injured reserve. Storer was recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in 2008, but suffered "a major setback" in his rehabilitation, according to Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris.

Last Wednesday after the team’s first OTAs (organized team activities) at One Buccaneer Place this month, Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris revealed that fullback Byron Storer had suffered “a major setback” in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament that caused him to go on injured reserve last year after hurting his right knee against Carolina in Week 6. On Tuesday the Bucs sent Storer back to injured reserve.

Storer being taken off the active roster leaves the team with just two fullbacks – starter B.J. Askew and reserve Jameel Cook. This will likely prompt the Buccaneers to add another fullback prior to training camp to compete with Cook and help the unit practice without Cook and Askew taking so many reps.

Storer, who made the team as an undrafted free agent from California in 2007 after a stint on the practice squad, was mostly a special teams player for Tampa Bay. Last year, he saw some duty as a fullback, starting three games in place of the injured Askew (vs. Green Bay, at Denver and vs. Carolina), but did not record any statistics. During the 2007 season, Storer caught two passes for three yards.

Tough break for Storer. He had a promising future.

Wouldn't be surprised if they did NOT sign another FB. I have a feeling they are probably looking at using Ward and Graham on the field together alot.

Who cares, the only reason this guy even played last year was because Askew was injured. He wouldn't have seen the field this year with Askew and Cook, heck even Graham would've been in at FB before him especially since Ward is here to hold down the HB spot.

um, iprock22...

Cook wasn't even on the team last year until Storer got injured. Storer was #2 man on the depth chart and Cook had been outright released before the season started. He only stayed on the roster into this year because Storer never returned before the offseason. The kid was also dynamite on special teams for us. THAT'S why we care about this story.

Ummm, laportej....

First off I realize that Cook wasn't on the team until Storer went down that why you will see that I refered to Askew's injury and nothing about Cook. I did however say that with Askew and Cook on the roster, Storer's overall chances of making the team are slim to none...both of afore mentioned FBs are better than him...WAY better than him.

Also to say that he was dynamite on special teams (like a Larry Izzo) is a bit of a stretch. Was he solid? Perhaps. But you can always find solid special teams guys, lots of undrafted FAs and third tear guys tend to be willing to put their bodies on the line(which is what ST is all about) and play hard on special teams just for the chance to stick with an NFL team, they can be found much easier than probably any other position in the NFL. I'd rather drop him and find a guy that can hold up and not get injured as much AND provide depth at a position where we need it (for example Koutovidies is a DYNAMITE ST player and provides depth at a position where its needed, therefore getting optimum usage from that roster spot). We don't need 3 FBs especially an injury prone one who ONLY plays special teams and is average at it at best.

That's why I said who cares. Not because I don't wish him the best, I hope he gets healthy and gets another chance somewhere else....I just don't really care that a FRINGE player who hasn't really done much of anything got released from my team. Make sense?
