Winslow Reports For Duty

Tampa Bay tight end Kellen Winslow joined his teammates for the Buccaneers' organized team activity at One Buc Place on Tuesday. Winslow discussed his absence from the previous five voluntary OTAs and said he plans to participate in the rest of the team's offseason workouts.

Organized team activities are voluntary in the National Football League, but tight end Kellen Winslow's absence from the Bucs' past five OTAs didn't sit well with some fans.

That's because the Bucs traded a 2009 second-round pick and 2010 fifth-round draft selection to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Winslow on the first day of free agency. In April, Bucs general manager Mark Dominik signed Winslow, who had two years remaining on his deal, to a six-year, $36 million extension.

Winslow, 25, fully participated in Tampa Bay's OTA on Tuesday and explained his absence from OTAs up to this point.

"I just had some family issues I needed to deal with, some personal issues," said Winslow. "The team understood. I talked to Coach Morris and the G.M. and I had an excuse, and they excused me. I thank them for that."

Winslow has been attempting to move his family from Cleveland to the Tampa Bay area since he was traded nearly three months ago. The former first-round draft pick also missed part of Tampa Bay's first three-day mini-camp under head coach Raheem Morris when his father-in-law, Enrique Guzman, who suffers from Alzheimer's, went missing in California before being found safe a few days later.

"[OTAs] are very important," said Winslow. "They are voluntary, but they're really not voluntary. You do need to be here, and I wish I could have been here. I just couldn't."

Winslow hasn't completed his move to Tampa yet, but said he doesn't plan on missing any of Tampa Bay's remaining OTAs or the team's mandatory mini-camp in mid-June.

Although he has not been practicing with his new teammates at One Buc Place, Winslow suggested he has attempted to study new offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski's playbook in an effort to hit the ground running upon his return, which was Tuesday.

"We had the mini-camp and I took as many notes as I could," said Winslow. "We made some adjustments, so I'm trying to catch up. I don't think it will take long.

"It's a very simple offense and I like it because it's not too much in terms of volume of words. It's tight end friendly, it's running friendly and it's wide receiver friendly. Whoever gets open is going to be open and get the ball. We're also going to run the ball. I'm just going to do my best to be a piece of the puzzle and make plays."

Not only does he like Tampa Bay's offense, Winslow is also quite fond of first-year head coach Raheem Morris.

"I don't like him. I love him," Winslow said of playing for Morris. "I just love everything about him. He's always on me. I can't imagine playing for anybody else. This guy just gets us going. I can't wait to start."

Morris is looking for players to step up and establish themselves as leaders in Tampa Bay's young locker room. Winslow, who was deemed a controversial figure during his playing days in Cleveland, is one of those players, but was called out by former Bucs defensive tackle Warren Sapp two weeks ago due to his absence from OTAs.

"It was a chance for you to see your team come together. We never left here," Sapp said of OTAs. "We always came here to work. Mondays through Thursdays were workdays here. That's how we went about it. That's why I used to get on Keyshawn [Johnson] all the time when he first got here. Bill Parcells would never let you not show up during the offseason. Even if it was just running and lifting he was going to show up. We didn't ask him to run and lift. We were just asking him during those four weeks to be here so we could all come together. He wouldn't do that. It shows your dedication to your team more anything. Are you ready to lay the foundation that will carry us through the season? That's what is going on right now. That's why Kellen Winslow needs to be here so that when the quarterback throws to him when the blitz package is coming, ‘I know you're going to be there for me, Winslow.' Then you get the chance to work with Antonio Bryant and the other receivers. What the hell else are you doing? What else is going on? The Kentucky Derby?"

"When your team fires up OTAs and you're not here you're being misunderstood again, right? Your past doesn't reflect your future, but it does give a refection of what you might do. I'll leave it at that."
Winslow has caught 219 passes for 2,459 yards (11.2 avg.) and 11 touchdowns while making one Pro Bowl during his five-year career. However, he knows he must have a presence at One Buc Place in order to truly establish himself as a leader in Tampa Bay.

"That's one of the main reasons I wanted to be here and get the playbook down," Winslow said of establishing himself as a leader. "I want to be here with the guys. What Warren [Sapp] said, we worked that out. I called him right after I read that. I guess he didn't' know I had an excuse. They're important, and I wanted to be here. I just couldn't."

Well, I'm glad he's here. He's supposed to be the cornerstone of the organization, so the sooner he starts acting like one and putting his prodigious physical talents to use the better.

I think we can all agree that this is going to be an exciting and interesting year. As football fans, watching the new schemes play out and the position battles unfold will be entertaining. Being competitive is about all we can ask for this year. No need for doom and gloom - we all know it's going to be tough. I don't need to read again "I'm telling you they're going to suck" by some of you. Just enjoy it for what it is - entertainment.

Knock the crap out of people Bucs - whatever your record looks like - just be physical. That'll work - right?

I'm with you tyork. I really don't care how many games we win this year as long as these young guys step up and we are one of the most physical teams in the NFL, I'll be happy.

Even though we will probaly have growing pains this year and most likely struggle to a losing record, I'm more excited than I have been in years. With Gruden we always knew what to expect...and it was boring. Now we have all these young guys and new schemes. Will Rheem make a good coach? Will Winslow and Bryant play at elite levels or return to sloth mode? Will Clayton regain his rookie form? Will the Ward/Grahm combo make for a top ten running game? Will our young defense surprise everyone and finish top ten? What young guy will explode onto the scene this year? Will McCown be good? Will Freeman play this year?

I don't know how any Buc fan couldn't be excited to watch this year play out.

Go Bucs!

I'm glad people are finally getting over this "why isn't KW at OTA's" This guy is going to make everyone completely forget about this....I've said it before, any TE that cathes over 80 balls a year and over a 1,000 yrds has to have some mad skills for that position. I didn't always like Winslow, especially after the "Soldier" comment, but I said if the Bucs ever had the chance to land him, it should be a no-brainer, he is a stud that has game, and we're all going to see just how tough this sob is! Those who wish to write him off as injured before he even suits up, are those who want him to fail, so let the man show what he can do here in pewter before you start writing him off or acting like it was the biggest blunder the team has made, I praise the Bucs to have the nads to pull this off, Cleveland will miss KW-mark it down!

Matt Jones anyone?

I am very glad and very excited to see K2 at the OTA's! ! !

I think he will be a HUGE upgrade at the TE position. I had always liked A. Smith a lot, but c'mon, this guy is way better than Smith and a proven player at his position.

All the camp battles will be so fun to watch that I might not even care what our record is until next year. Let's see what happens to everybody and where they fall on the depth chart before we jump to any conclusions.

Go Bucs ! ! !

Just one more thought... Morris played "Come Together" at the OTA practice. What a great song and a subtle hint that he wants the team to start to gel. Not nearly as good of a song, but will Morris play "Let's Get Physical?" LOL

I'm with you guys...win or lose this season I think this will be an exciting one to watch play out. I think all of the changes we have gone through may prove to be some hills to climb this season but I really don't see how anyone can deny that these changes are going to make us a better team going into the future. I'd much rather see an improving team trying to make itself into an NFL powerhouse than a consistent 7-9 to 9-7 team year in and year out getting bounced in the first round when we make it.

Glad he is at OTA'S. Sounds like a user friendly offensive scheme is going to help him and others. I cant wait to see Winslow and Bryant working together. They also say he can split out and play wide receiver. He should definitely add some options to our offense. He will probably help our Red Zone offense also. With him and Stevens on the field defenses will have problems. Finally i think players with his talent level can make good QB's Better. After all most good QB's are surrounded by good play makers and a strong O-line. Go Buc's

For those on the board that have tried to conduct business with severe "family" issues knows the pressure that it puts on you. With that being said I do understand and know that this man will be there and dominate! God, then family...not football; he needed to get that situated, I can relate.

Thanks,
Architek

sunrisejeff - There's one thing I must point out here. It's not like the last regime wanted to be a .500 ball club. They were working on building a dynasty just like these new guys are, but you must remember that when your club doesn't have money to go out and sign alot of these guys, you're not going to be on the same, level playing field as most other elite teams.

If Dominik and Raheem did not have salary cap room this season, there would have been no trade for Winslow, no signing of Derrick Ward in free agency. I think it's important to always remember that going forward.

These new guys HAVE A CHANCE at succeeding because of the money management over the years of Bruce Allen. If you don't have money, you can't sign anyone.
