Bucs Sign DT Miller |
![]() Bucs DT Roy Miller plans on seeing some playing time during his rookie season (Cliff Welch) |
Bucs rookie defensive tackle Roy Miller signed his rookie contract Monday. The deal is for four years. Miller, who was Tampa Bay's 2009 third-round draft pick, played collegiately at Texas and will compete for playing time at defensive tackle in training camp. The Bucs released QB Brian Griese to make room for Miller.
Miller signed a four-year contract with the Buccaneers. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the total base value of Miller's deal is $2.52 million and includes a $770,000 signing bonus.
In order to make room for Miller on their offseason roster, the Bucs released quarterback Brian Griese.
Miller, 22, joined the Bucs as a third-round pick (110th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Texas.
The 6-foot-1, 310-pound Miller started 19 of the 49 games he played at Texas. He recorded 5.5 sacks, 28 quarterback pressures and 11 tackles for a loss as a captain in his senior season.
Miller's impressive strength and offseason helped him get drafted by the Bucs, but he carries a chip on his shoulder heading into training camp because he believes he should have been drafted in the first round, not the third.
The Bucs expect Miller to compete with defensive tackles Ryan Sims, Chris Hovan, Dre Moore and Greg Peterson, among others, for playing time in training camp, which the team reports to on July 31.
Tampa Bay has just one draft pick -- first-round quarterback Josh Freeman -- unsigned from its 2009 NFL Draft class.

PR's been relatively quiet concerning Roy Miller in minicamps. I don't know quite how to take that.

Our View: Miller doesn't have the eye-popping measurables or workout numbers that will astound you. What he does have is a tireless motor and supreme effort to get to the quarterback on every play. He has good lower body strength and understands how to use leverage to his advantage. Miller was named Defensive MVP of the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, when Texas beat Ohio State and he followed that up with a solid week of practice at the 2009 Shrine Game. He is a versatile player and could line up at either tackle or end on the defense - plus he could get some work as a goalline back on offense!

Adams could thrive in the new defensive scheme the Bucs will play under Jim Bates, which will give him better angles to rush the quarterback. The subtle change in alignment could allow Adams to better take advantage of the edge rushing talent that prompted Tampa Bay to draft him two seasons ago. If everything falls into place for him, Adams could reach the 40-10 plateaus needed to become an elite DL1.
Worst Case
Adams has yet to fulfill the promise expected of him. He's shown flashes of pass rush ability, but has only 11 sacks in two full seasons. Adams has also struggled to produce tackles in bunches in run support. If he is unable to translate his athleticism into on-field production, no scheme or alignment change will be enough to push his value above the crowded DL2/3 tier.
Outlook
On paper, 2009 has the makings of a breakout season for Adams. He'll be in his third season and should benefit from a change in defensive alignment that will improve his pass rush angles. His lackluster first two seasons make him extremely risky as a DL1, but he's a fine choice as a mid-range DL2 with upside.
