Bucs Targeting Packers Game For Throwback Uniforms

Although there has been no official announcement from the team regarding which home game will see the Buccaneers donning their old orange and white Bucco Bruce uniforms, PewterReport.com has learned that Tampa Bay is targeting the Green Bay contest on Nov. 8 as a throwback game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acknowledged that a throwback game in which the team will wear its old uniforms will take place during the 2009 season, but has yet to officially name which home game that will be.

PewterReport.com has learned that the Buccaneers are targeting their home contest against the Green Bay Packers as the throwback game. The team will abandon its red and pewter uniforms in favor of the old orange and white uniforms that were worn from 1976-96. The game is set for kickoff at Raymond James Stadium at 1:00 p.m. on November 8 following the Bucs’ bye week.

The Packers game makes the most sense because of the famed “Battle of the Bays” series that took place between the two teams from 1977-2001 when the Bucs were in the NFC Central division. In addition to wearing throwback uniforms, Tampa Bay plans to unveil its Ring of Honor at the stadium during halftime.

The Green Bay contest marks the first time that Tampa Bay will wear its throwback uniforms – complete with the “Bucco Bruce” helmet that featured the Errol Flynn-like winking pirate biting down on a dagger – since December 22, 1996 when Tampa Bay beat visiting Chicago in the season finale`, 34-19. The Bucs unveiled new team colors of pewter and red and the new red flag and skull and swords logo for the following season on April 9, 1997.

Tampa Bay won its first game in the new uniforms in the 1997 home opener against San Francisco, 13-6, en route to a 10-6 record that fueled the Bucs’ first playoff appearance since 1982.

The Bucs are 20-29-1 against the Packers all-time, and were 17-28-1 against them as NFC Central division rivals. The Bucs currently have an all-time regular season record of 205-310-1, and had a record of 100-223-1 wearing the old orange and white uniforms.

The Buccaneers are 7-1 at Raymond James Stadium against the Packers since the stadium opened in 1998. Tampa Bay won last year’s contest, 30-21.

I just hope it's late enough in the season to where it cools down, because the Bucs have always been big fans of wearing their white jerseys at home to deflect the heat on the visitors dark jerseys. I think I speak for many Buc fans who would rather see the Bucs wear those tangerine jerseys with white pants, versus the mid 90's version of white jerseys with orange pants, which never really did much for me. But in the 90's there were many years where the Bucs would almost wear those white jerseys almost the entire year just to get that few degree cooling advantage, I say wear those classic orange jerseys that LeeRoy and Hugh Green, David Lewis, Ricky Bell, Doug Williams, all those early pioneer Bucs used to wear all the time, anything other than those orange jerseys would be defeating the purpous in my opinion.

If I recall correctly, that game against the 49ers was the game that put the Bucs on the national scene and marked the end of the 49ers great run. Sapp knocked out both Steve Young and Jerry Rice in that game. That game shook up the NFL world.
I never thought I see those ugly orange uniforms again. But, I am looking forward to it. I guess I'm getting nostalgic.
Go Bucs!!!!!

I love the idea.We will be 0-8 maybe 1-7 by the Pack game so it is fitting. Please wear the Giles Orange not the Santana Dotson orange.I'm definitely going because it will be the last time. The Ring of Honor is way overdue. If Gruber is in then so must Tony Mayberry.Neither should be in.Selmon,Brooks,Lynch,Wilder,Mark Carrier was a better Buc then Doug williams who always signs#17 not #12.Alstott yes.Dungy should be honored also. There will be 10 people there just like the 80's so buy your seats gametime not Ebay.Go Bucs.

Ya, thanks for the update, but we knew about this two months ago.

Nice idea to have the throwback uniforms to make it look like the ol' days. I will wear my Vinny jersey and a paper bag on my head to make it look official. I wonder who is older Raheem Morris or Josh Freeman.
To bad Morris didn't coach at Florida so we could have drafted Tebow.

If were not having a good year, I would hate to see the bucs break out the old uniforms. I just wish we could have worn them back in 2002.

For the love of God, can we stop the TEBOW FOR PRESIDENT lovefest!

Tebow will not be a good pro QB. He just won't. Get over it. HE's a great guy, a helluva football player (at the college level), and seems to be a good leader.

So was Gerald Ford. It didn't make him a good pro...

DLS5492- It was our coming out party, but did not put the 9ers away. they were in the NFC championship game that year. In fact they won 10 in a row after losing to us.

Mike5520- I hear ya, but its STILL not official, but anyone who knows anyone at one buc already knew about this. its just NOT OFFICIAL yet.

Im pretty sure the person I talked to said it would be Orange tops, white bottoms, because they are going to be celbrating the 1979 season as well, 30 year anniversary.
I doubt the glazers will bring out the Orange pants.

and as for the paperbag comment by jongruden, you need to look up your history bud.
from 1978-1982, we were in the playoffs 3 out of 4 years, made it to the NFC championship game, all 2 years after not winning a single game ever.

OMG- and no one knows their history either to point out the correction...
it was the BEARS they beat on Dec 22, 1996, NOT detroit!

This will be weird........dont know if i'm ready to see the orange out already........too early for me.

to RCPadrick;
I know you must be an NFL scout to truly predict how a collegiate player will do because a heisman trophy winner and winng the the championship doesn't prove anything. Your absolutley right lets rather gamble on a guy who was unsuccessful in college rather than successful, thanks again for the superior insight.

I will be wearing my throwback jersey at the game then if they are gonna go through with this.

Why would anybody want to resurrect those old uniforms? Not only are they hideous, but they trigger awful memories of some *really* bad football. This stat says it all:

Creamsicles: 100(W) - 223(L) -1(T) .309%

I already wear a bucco bruce hat to everygame now and have my Orange jersey ready to go. The old uniforms are classic and a throwback game is long overdue. Heck at last years packers game I was wearing a white Eric Rhett throwback jersey.
BUC-CAN-EERS Hey! Hey !Tampa Bay the Bucs know how to shine...give a cheer for the Buccaneers...Go Bucs. Real Bucs fans will remember this tune.
