Mahan Restructures Contract

Backup lineman Sean Mahan restructured his 2009 salary.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup offensive lineman Sean Mahan restructured his contract for the 2009 season. Mahan was scheduled to make $3 million in base salary, but is now slated to make $1.6 million next season. Mahan originally signed the five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 2007 season.

Buccaneers guard/center Sean Mahan recently restructured his contract with the Tampa Bay. Mahan was scheduled to have the highest base salary of any Bucs offensive linemen before restructuring. In the third year of a five-year contract, Mahan restructured his deal to go from a $3 million base salary to a $1.6 million base salary in 2009. Mahan and the Bucs completed the revised contract prior to free agency, and Mahan could make the money back if he reaches playing time incentives.

Mahan, 29, signed a five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 2007 season. He had played four seasons in Tampa Bay before signing with the Steelers to be their starting center. After losing the starting center spot in training camp of 2008, the Steelers traded Mahan to the Buccaneers. Last season Mahan (6-3, 301) backed up center Jeff Faine, but had zero starts as Faine played the entire season.

Mahan's base salary was $2.175 million in 2008, and is scheduled to have base salaries of $2.08 million and $2.56 million in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Mahan has suited up for 88 games in his career with 52 starts, with 36 starts coming as a Buccaneer between 2004-06.

The Bucs are believed to be close to $30 million under the salary cap.

Mahan restructuring his contract helps to solidify his roster spot. Mahan is now behind some of the offensive line starters in terms of salary. The Bucs' depth along the offensive line has taken a hit with the departure of guard Arron Sears, who has missed most of the offseason practices due to a personal issue. It is unknown when or if Sears will return to the team.

The issues with Sears are believed to be similar to that of former Bucs safety John Howell. Clinical depression sidelined Howell for all of training camp in 2003, and with the help of medication he was able to resume his playing career. Backup guard Jeremy Zuttah has taken the starting left guard spot, and Mahan is the only experienced backup at guard or center.

Sweet. Next up - the 2 remaining rookies, followed by AB, Ruud, and Penn.

Um...this has become somewhat of a big deal with Sears going out and Faine suffering from a bulky back. He was a on the verge of being cut with the high carry-over salary from the Steeler contract. I wouldn't expect former coach Gruden aka Chunky to think any Buc manuever to be a big deal at this point :) .

This is great news. The fact that Mahan has been eating up so much of our cap space while guys like Ruud and T. Jackson are so underpaid has been killing me. We need the depth now, so I'm very happy to see he restructured rather than being cut.

Your absolutely right JDOUBLE this is big news for our team it saved a whopping 1.5 mil seeing that we are already 40 mil under the cap I again stand corrected by your expertise.

He's not the best but he is experienced and the best we got. Don't know how that makes this season uplifting saying that! There's no reason that Ruud cant get the extension he deserves. Even Penn though he's acting like a brat right about now he desreves a long term deal. He solidified our LT for the last two seasons so we need to keep that continuity . Besides they have the money. Both sides need to get a grip and comprimise.

Hate to disagree with ya big john but it is a big deal in my eyes too.......kinda foolish to have your backup earning more than the starter.......good move Dom.

It's nice to see a player playing for what he's worth instead of holding out thinking he's worth more. Maybe Penn can learn something. Way to take one for the team Mahan.

JDOUBLE is absolutely right, jongruden! The Bucs actually had roughly $28 million going into the draft when you sit down and do the math. Right now they've signed all but two players from that and they'll likely have spent $10-$15 million signing them and the undrafted rookies they're keeping on. That's $13-$18 million left to sign Rudd, Jackson, and Penn to long term deals if they choose to do that. So yeah, Mahan restructuring is a big deal, because with that kind of margin they could use the extra cap space at this point.

Laportej1 must be Mark Dominick in disguise to justify a Mahan restructuring as a great move , yawnn! This is about the most mediocre cap space move in recent times but somehow everyone is excited about it.

This is bigger new than Michael Jackson's death, CNN has got the live feed on this baby! Wow, a backup offensive lineman for the Bucs restructures his contract.

Mahan would likely have been cut if he and the Bucs couldn't agree on a restructured deal. With Arron Sears situation up in the air, Mahan is suddenly much more important. This IS an important move. Not only does it lock very important depth on the O-line, but it avoids any rifts that would be caused by a 2nd stringer making more than all the starting O-line. You gotta keep your guys happy and avoid causing bad blood if you expect to have a cohesive team that executes well on Sundays. Sorry you can't see that JGruden....maybe that's why your co-hosting MNF instead of coaching an NFL team.

Jonbuc, Faine is suffering from a "bulky" back?!!

Gruden aka "Chunky"???!!

Good ones!!

Obviously a smart move by both sides - the Bucs threatened he would be cut - Mahan wisely blinked and agreed to lower his salary. Nothing big - just adds depth along an already strong offensive line, especially w/ Sears in question.

Reminds me of a move Bruce Allen would have decided and told Mark Dominic to execute.

Simply put Mahan was replaceable! We could always get Jeb Terry back..

Call JEB TERRYS AGENT!!!!!! Bring back Charles Mcrae and Rob Taylor...Mahan is undersized and a joke.Mahan is equivalent to WR Dexter Jackson the second round bust and 2000's version of Danny Peebles,oh wait at least Peebles played. Is Mallory or Jorge Diaz available? This means nothing...Zutah will be a good player.Enough of the rave for our o-line,Truebloood was horrible last year and Joseph is overrated.Faine is the standout and Penn is solid. For you grammar heads I know I butchered Charles name,so what! Fellas, this year will remind you of 1986 but at least tickets will be cheap and we will have top 5 pick but must pass on all those great QB's.Freeman the pressure is on Mr.Jack Thompson.Go Bucs.
