The Buccaneers released quarterback Brian Griese Monday. Griese, 34, spent a total of three seasons with Tampa Bay. The former third-round draft pick helped the Bucs win the NFC South division title in 2005. Tampa Bay will take four quarterbacks to training camp.
On Monday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a move many had been expecting, releasing quarterback Brian Griese.
The Bucs released Griese to make room for rookie defensive tackle Roy Miller on their offseason roster. Miller signed his rookie deal on Monday.
Griese, 34, had two stints with Tampa Bay (2004-05, '08), and helped the Bucs win the 2005 NFC South division title.
The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Griese originally entered the NFL as a third-round pick with the Denver Broncos in 1998. He spent five seasons in Denver before joining Miami in 2003.
In his time away from Tampa Bay, Griese spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears (2006-07) before being traded back to the Buccaneers during the 2008 offseason.
Last year, Griese played in five games for the Bucs, completing 59.8 percent of his passes for 1,073 yards and tossing five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Griese has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 19,440 yards and thrown 119 touchdowns and 99 interceptions in 83 career starts.
Despite being the most experienced quarterback on Tampa Bay's roster, Griese did not appear to be in Tampa Bay's future plans at quarterback, where the Bucs will have four signal callers - Luke McCown, Byron Leftwich, Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson - compete in training camp.
Griese was, however, invited to Tampa Bay's mandatory mini-camp in June, but skipped those workouts as well as all voluntary practices during the offseason. It is believed Griese, who stayed in Denver to be with his pregnant wife for most of the offseason, was fined for missing Tampa Bay's mandatory mini-camp.

Good riddance! Griese is proof positive that there's a difference between a player's IQ and his football IQ. All his coaches raved about his intelligence but his decision making on the field was more miss than hit when the game mattered the most.

xxjjmurx- you hit it right on the mark he is captain checkdown alright he always threw to his halfback even when it was 3rd and ten like in Atlanta he drove me crazy, he always choked when the game was on the line when we had the ball in any game with two minutes to go I thought we would lose the game, once in a blue moon he would have those games like against Chicago but I can't help to forget when we were kicking Green Bay's ass and he put them right back in the game withj two picks although he did when it for us, I'm glad he is gone nontheless!

When I think of Grieise, I always think about that Chicago game last year. The Kansas City game may have been the largest come back from a point perception but, the Chicago comeback was the biggest from a memory perception for me.

Glad we signed Mr. Miller and I really hope he beats out Hovan or Sims for a starting spot in the middle. He's got the right build, let's hope he has that QB killer mentality we have lacked since Sapp left.

How could you hate the guy the brought the lombardi trophy to Tampa? Sapp said it himself on America's game that they would not have a super bowl with Dungy he couldn't fix the offense 3 coordinators during his tenure. Gruden was what this team needed at that time a fiery coach who got the team up for the games. Was he perfect no but what coach is perfect not even Belichick is or as I call him "The Cheater". So don't hate on any guy that contributed to us winning the championship it was just his time to go this team needed another direction Gruden was to loyal to veteran players Brooks would still be here if he was and that was a very unpopular move to release him with Buc fans, we will soon see if 9-7 last year was so bad.

Jdouble- being objective about the team isn't because I'm not on board it means that I am fair in my opinion I'm not one of those fans that want to say everyone on the Bucs is great or "Beasts" as you would say, I tell it like it is it might sound negative to you who want to believe this team has no issues I refer to those fans as blind fans with no sense of reality! BuccanAy- seriously???? they would never fine him for being with his pregnant wife. They would however fine him for missing MANDATORY practice and not having his absence approved by the FO before hand, which he may not have. BUT, it has not been confirmed that he was even fined either, the beginning of that last sentence states, "it is BELIEVED" which means not confirmed. if Winslow can be excused to move from Cleveland, i'm more than sure Griese would be excused for his pregnant wife.

There is nothing wrong about being positive but if some one raises issues wih the team don't have a mental break down I have been a fan since 1985 I love the Bucs I have an entire game room dedicated to them but I wont back every move and find no fault in my team that is just drinking the home town kool aid. this is forum is for fans to express their opinions without reprisal but people take it personal if you tell them you didn't like the drafting of Freeman which is ridiculous, I will be at the same stadium as you cheering for the same team I suffered through the Vinny years I can handle anything.

Griese thankyou for the Chicago game that was lovely.I won't miss the important interceptions at crucial moments of the game.Yes you may have known the offense inside and out but you still tossed the rock to Julius Peppers or any other DL for a TD on the regular.Griese is like a pretty woman,you enjoy her for a little while then eventually she always dissapoints.Griese will always be a second string QB and that is it.Jon Gruden you are correct majority of the time but the Optimist who comment on this site feel Griese could be Steve Young, just give him one more chance?
