Freeman May Start Friday |
![]() Bucs rookie quarterback Josh Freeman may start on Friday vs. Houston (Cliff Welch) |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris stated that rookie quarterback Josh Freeman could be the starter for the Bucs preseason finale on Friday vs. Houston. Morris also hit on the looming roster cuts, G Arron Sears, K Matt Bryant, and WRs Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton missing practice on Tuesday.
Morris said he plans on playing a lot of his younger players in Tampa Bay's final preseason game of the year. Newly named starting quarterback Byron Leftwich, and backup quarterback Luke McCown may not play at all, according to Morris. The Bucs could potentially start quarterback Josh Freeman vs. the Houston Texans.
"He could come out of the tunnel," said Morris. "That would be nice, he can run out of the tunnel with his curly hair going."
Morris said that a number of the Bucs veterans would see little to no action Friday. In that group, he mentioned the starting offensive line, and the veteran running backs like Derrick Ward, Earnest Graham, Cadillac Williams and even Clifton Smith. The Bucs will lean on halfback Kareem Huggins, fullback B.J. Askew, and fullback Jameel Cook in running game. Huggins missed the last game with a knee injury.
Two veterans who will not play against the Texans are starting wide receivers Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton. Bryant has missed all the preseason games after recovering from minor knee surgery. Clayton played in the Bucs' second preseason game at Jacksonville, but missed much of training camp and the other two preseason games with a hamstring injury.
"[Bryant] did not go today because of the scheduling conflict," said Morris "There wasn't enough time to warm-up and that type of thing. Same with Clayton. Those two were held out again, but they are fine. They looked good and felt pretty good yesterday. I just didn't feel it was smart to rush them."
The injuries on the Bucs' roster could cause the team to make adjustments to their final 53-man roster. Tampa Bay must trim its roster from 75 to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.
"It's never easy. It's probably the hardest part of my job - cutting a player or firing a staff member," said Morris. "For the most part we feel like a guy cuts himself. We haven't had to make a tough one yet, getting down to 75. When we start making the tough cuts - that's when we become a really good team."
The Buccaneers' last preseason game will be the final chance for many players on the bubble to make their case to remain on the roster. Morris said that was what happened last year, and thinks it could happen again in 2009.
"This game is where people make big pushes," said Morris. "Last year, Clifton Smith made a big push. He didn't quite make the team then, but he landed on our practice squad and showed up [on the active roster] a few weeks later. [Cornerback] Elbert Mack made a big push this time last year. It's a big-time push for guys this week."
One player that is not expected to be activated for the 53-man roster is guard Arron Sears. The third-year guard was placed on the reserve did not report list at beginning of training camp as he deals with a personal issue. Sears avoided offseason workouts, and has not practiced with his teammates since the team's first mini-camp in early April.
"That's completely a personal issue," said Morris. "That is at the same spot it was. There has been no new dialogue as far as my part. I have to coach the 80 men that are here, now the 75, and we have to get down to 53."
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Bucs head coach Raheem Morris on whether injured kicker Matt Bryant (hamstring) will kick on Friday night.
"I don't know. In my opinion, Matt Bryant has got to do what he can do. When you talk about injury, you don't know. You can't make a guy do anything he doesn't want to do when he's injured. You don't do that. We don't. If you guys don't go to work tomorrow, or for the next month, I've got to make a decision. You have to go with the guys that go to work and can help you. I can't make a decision on a guy that isn't at work right now. I hope he gets back. I really do."

BTW, I hope we don't play any starters on Thursday. I remember D. Buenning being among the few we did play on '06 and he managed to get hurt. We had to start opening day with J. Terry and S. Mahan at OG against the Ravens. We all know how that turned out...

Why don't you get off his back and give him a friggin chance to prove himself? Your comments show your ignorance in that you have prejudged the young man and aren't willing to see if he works out. Is your hate for him solely based on the fact that we won't be drafting your man crush next year? If we play the team that Tebow goes to, are you going to be rooting for Tebow or Freeman? You say your a long time fan, but you sure don't act like it.

Well not Bucfan47 and jongruden.
Will they have patience with Leftwich? He was booed in his first ever apperance in a bucs uni at Ray Jay.
One would think that if you are a long time Buc fan, particually if you remember the 70's and 80's how could you not be patient?

To be a fan doesn't mean you cheer for everything the team does, I guess if you were a Eagles fan you would be happy they got Vick and say "why don't you give it a chance". I was only refering to how I agreed on Freeman's lame hair style, I'm surprised you don't like it you like everything else that involves this team.

including a 48–28 win in the Citrus Bowl over Northwestern, a game in which Manning passed for 408 yards and 4 touchdowns; he was named the game's MVP.[24][25]
the Vols would win the national championship.[32] However, the Vols' defense could not stop Nebraska's rushing attack, giving up over 400 rushing yards in a 42–17 loss.[33] As a senior, Manning won numerous awards; he was a consensus First-team All-American, the Maxwell Award winner, the Davey O'Brien Award winner, the Johnny Unitas Award winner, and the Best College Player ESPY Award winner, among others; however, he did not win the Heisman, finishing runner-up to Charles Woodson.[34][35][36] In 2005, Tennessee retired Manning's number (#16).[37] One of the streets leading to Neyland Stadium has been re-named Peyton Manning Pass.

We all know jongruden didn't like the Freeman selection due to his extensive film study and research on him. All of the teams that employ experienced individuals to do this sort of thing and Mel Kiper, somehow came to the conclusion that Freeman could one day become an NFL quarterback and at worst be drafted in the 3rd round. Of course we all know a QB drafted after the 3rd round or not drafted at all won't ever make it. Guys like Romo, Brady, Warner, Garcia will all "suck" eventually.
But jongruden believes none of that because he checked out a few highlights, pulled up football powerhouse Kansas State's won-loss record and Freemans statistics and determined he "sucked" .
Part of those statistics included Freemans starting as a "true" freshman. I don't think DoubleT did that at Florida. To not think there is a drastic difference between the team surrounding Freeman and the teams surrounding Manning and Tebow is just stupid.
At least give the kid a chance "Dude".

If Morris was truly courageous, he would start Freeman.
Otherwise, I share your optimism. I think we are doing what's right for the future, finally. This reminds me of the 1994-1995 season.

I guarantee if you put Payton Manning on the Bucs third-string offense, his numbers would suffer, too.
Watch Freeman ... his delivery, his decisions, his movement, his presence, etc. If he stinks it up, I'll be the first to say it. But if he does his job as well as can be expected given the talent around him, then all of you "haters" should man up, as well.

How about recent Heisman QBs? -- Andre Ware, Gino Toretta, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke and Jason White
How are these guys doing? As a matter of fact, only Carson Palmer is an elite QB out of recent (past 20 years) Heisman winners.
Let's talk about "the most amazing passer in NCAA history" Matt Leinart? He can't even beat out Kurt Warner, and MAY NOT be the backup!
All this means is stats can say whatever you want them to say. Watch the game. Watch the guy. If he can play, it doesn't matter what his stats were in college.
What were Tom Brady's stats? How about Brett Favre? Ben Roethlisburger? Drew Brees? I don't seem to remember any of those guys destroying NCAA records.

I'm not sold on Freeman just yet either. But...
Be careful basing all of your predictions on college stats. Per your argument, Danny Wuerffel should be an NFL star and Tom Brady should have never been given a chance.
Guys like Brady and a certain QB who won a Super Bowl in Tampa couldn't hold onto starting jobs in college - yet because of intangibles coaches saw in them - excelled in the NFL when given the chance.
Most would argue that Bellichick is the top coach in the NFL. The last two QB's to come out of his system is a 6th round draft pick who rarely got the start in college (Brady) and a guy who hadn't started since high school (Cassel). Think he gives a damn about college stats?

Nothing is going to change the pick. Freeman will be the starting QB of the Bucs at some point. If you can't get over it, you will be a very unhappy person for the forseeable football future.
You can't always get what you want and you must adapt and overcome and work with what you have.

Freeman is a big strong kid with a big strong arm with good wheels and a great attitude who did what he did in college. College is now behind him and now he needs to do what he can for the Bucs.
Reminds me of modern day Doug Williams when we drafted him (for those of you old enough to remember).
And hopefully we will get off the QB carosel that John Gruden got us stuck on.
For those of you who just want to hate on the kid go ahead, its a free country but I for one would like to give the kid a chance, something some of you don't seem to even want to do.
It must be nice being perfect.
