Freeman May Start Friday

Bucs rookie quarterback Josh Freeman may start on Friday vs. Houston (Cliff Welch)

Bucs rookie quarterback Josh Freeman may start on Friday vs. Houston (Cliff Welch)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris stated that rookie quarterback Josh Freeman could be the starter for the Bucs preseason finale on Friday vs. Houston. Morris also hit on the looming roster cuts, G Arron Sears, K Matt Bryant, and WRs Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton missing practice on Tuesday.

After a rain adjusted practice and walk-through on Tuesday, Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris discussed a number of topics regarding his team.

Morris said he plans on playing a lot of his younger players in Tampa Bay's final preseason game of the year. Newly named starting quarterback Byron Leftwich, and backup quarterback Luke McCown may not play at all, according to Morris. The Bucs could potentially start quarterback Josh Freeman vs. the Houston Texans.

"He could come out of the tunnel," said Morris. "That would be nice, he can run out of the tunnel with his curly hair going."

Morris said that a number of the Bucs veterans would see little to no action Friday. In that group, he mentioned the starting offensive line, and the veteran running backs like Derrick Ward, Earnest Graham, Cadillac Williams and even Clifton Smith. The Bucs will lean on halfback Kareem Huggins, fullback B.J. Askew, and fullback Jameel Cook in running game. Huggins missed the last game with a knee injury.

Two veterans who will not play against the Texans are starting wide receivers Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton. Bryant has missed all the preseason games after recovering from minor knee surgery. Clayton played in the Bucs' second preseason game at Jacksonville, but missed much of training camp and the other two preseason games with a hamstring injury.

"[Bryant] did not go today because of the scheduling conflict," said Morris "There wasn't enough time to warm-up and that type of thing. Same with Clayton. Those two were held out again, but they are fine. They looked good and felt pretty good yesterday. I just didn't feel it was smart to rush them."

The injuries on the Bucs' roster could cause the team to make adjustments to their final 53-man roster. Tampa Bay must trim its roster from 75 to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.

"It's never easy. It's probably the hardest part of my job - cutting a player or firing a staff member," said Morris. "For the most part we feel like a guy cuts himself. We haven't had to make a tough one yet, getting down to 75. When we start making the tough cuts - that's when we become a really good team."

The Buccaneers' last preseason game will be the final chance for many players on the bubble to make their case to remain on the roster. Morris said that was what happened last year, and thinks it could happen again in 2009.

"This game is where people make big pushes," said Morris. "Last year, Clifton Smith made a big push. He didn't quite make the team then, but he landed on our practice squad and showed up [on the active roster] a few weeks later. [Cornerback] Elbert Mack made a big push this time last year. It's a big-time push for guys this week."

One player that is not expected to be activated for the 53-man roster is guard Arron Sears. The third-year guard was placed on the reserve did not report list at beginning of training camp as he deals with a personal issue. Sears avoided offseason workouts, and has not practiced with his teammates since the team's first mini-camp in early April.

"That's completely a personal issue," said Morris. "That is at the same spot it was. There has been no new dialogue as far as my part. I have to coach the 80 men that are here, now the 75, and we have to get down to 53."

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris on whether injured kicker Matt Bryant (hamstring) will kick on Friday night.

"I don't know. In my opinion, Matt Bryant has got to do what he can do. When you talk about injury, you don't know. You can't make a guy do anything he doesn't want to do when he's injured. You don't do that. We don't. If you guys don't go to work tomorrow, or for the next month, I've got to make a decision. You have to go with the guys that go to work and can help you. I can't make a decision on a guy that isn't at work right now. I hope he gets back. I really do."

Would someone hold Freeman down and shave his head? I can't take him seriously when he looks like a 14 year old Tito Jackson.

It will be good to see Freeman and Josh Johnson. I will be pulling for Johnson to stay. I like Quarterbacks that can run. Quarterback plays are a wasted wea[pon in my opinion. Also trick plays. Make a ball carrier out of Roy Miller on the goal line. There would be people flying everywhere. Go Bucs!!!!!

It's too bad injuries didn't allow Sears and Bryant to come in and really compete. Bryant is probably done for the Bucs but hopefully Sears can return next year. Otherwise it's back to back to spending Day 1 draft picks on O-linemen.

BTW, I hope we don't play any starters on Thursday. I remember D. Buenning being among the few we did play on '06 and he managed to get hurt. We had to start opening day with J. Terry and S. Mahan at OG against the Ravens. We all know how that turned out...

jDouble- For once I agree with you, Freeman looks like a human Chia Pet, that hair is embarrassing.
I wouldn't trust Freeman to run the scout team.

Everybody should be excited to see Freeman play. I mean it's only next ten years of the franchise you're looking at here. Might as well get used to it, crack a beer, and watch him develop.

Hopefully everything turns out alright and eventually we look back on this year with fondness.

Go Bucs

Yeah Matt Bryant is done for. Got a take on the Bucs QB situation. I think they probably didn't plan on bringing in another QB before they signed Leftwich until they saw how Luke performed in those first few OTA's and said, "he's not showing enough, we need to bring someone else in here". So Leftwich comes in and they decide ealier than we were led to believe, that he's gonna be the starter. I think they will now keep 4 QB's cuz they don't plan on keeping Leftwich around after this season and he has more trade/marketable value than Luke does so they hope to get something good for him, especially if he performs well. They want Freeman starting with Luke and JJ as the backups next year. What say ye Buc fans?

6:13pm, September 1, 2009

talon28

Oh and also, Luke is insurance if Lefty gets killed early on like a lot of fans think he will. Only thing is, that if he's gettin' killed...doesn't that probably mean our blocking and blitz pickups are lacking? Course you have to include an extra second or two due to his wind up throwing...just a thought guys.

JDouble

jongruden....I said he needs a haircut dude....I don't see how lame hair makes him unfit to run the scout team.

Why don't you get off his back and give him a friggin chance to prove himself? Your comments show your ignorance in that you have prejudged the young man and aren't willing to see if he works out. Is your hate for him solely based on the fact that we won't be drafting your man crush next year? If we play the team that Tebow goes to, are you going to be rooting for Tebow or Freeman? You say your a long time fan, but you sure don't act like it.

6:26pm, September 1, 2009

Peyton Manning stunk it up the first year and he claims the rookie mistakes made him a good quarterback. Do you think Buccaneer fan's would have patience?

6:54pm, September 1, 2009

legion3

"Do you think Buccaneer fan's would have patience?"

Well not Bucfan47 and jongruden.

Will they have patience with Leftwich? He was booed in his first ever apperance in a bucs uni at Ray Jay.

One would think that if you are a long time Buc fan, particually if you remember the 70's and 80's how could you not be patient?

Just because Freeman is a Buccaneer doesn't mean I automatically think he will be good, sorry I'm not biased like you are. You were probably happy we had Shaun King as our qb also. Well here's a blind fold so you can blindly root for every move the team makes. Yes, I think Tebow was a better college qb, you would have to be retarted to think otherwise.
To be a fan doesn't mean you cheer for everything the team does, I guess if you were a Eagles fan you would be happy they got Vick and say "why don't you give it a chance". I was only refering to how I agreed on Freeman's lame hair style, I'm surprised you don't like it you like everything else that involves this team.

Peyton Manning was good but also choked his entire career College! Btw I'm sure Freeman and his hairstyle pull hotter women then "jongruden" can dream about let alone the fat ones he's had to settle for his entire life. Get a life man, this a football website. Just because you hate the pick of Freeman and constantly rip him with no other proof except the notions in your head, and what you precieve his college career to be, getting into hairstyles?!?! it's really pathetic man. Either come with legit critique or shut your mouth.

Peyton's college career-Tennessee's all-time leading passer with 11,201 yards and 89 touchdowns and won 39 of 45 games as a starter, breaking the Southeastern Conference (SEC) record for career wins.[11][12]
including a 48–28 win in the Citrus Bowl over Northwestern, a game in which Manning passed for 408 yards and 4 touchdowns; he was named the game's MVP.[24][25]
the Vols would win the national championship.[32] However, the Vols' defense could not stop Nebraska's rushing attack, giving up over 400 rushing yards in a 42–17 loss.[33] As a senior, Manning won numerous awards; he was a consensus First-team All-American, the Maxwell Award winner, the Davey O'Brien Award winner, the Johnny Unitas Award winner, and the Best College Player ESPY Award winner, among others; however, he did not win the Heisman, finishing runner-up to Charles Woodson.[34][35][36] In 2005, Tennessee retired Manning's number (#16).[37] One of the streets leading to Neyland Stadium has been re-named Peyton Manning Pass.

Hey Litzy - I challenge you to show what Freeman has done in college after you call manning a choker you ignorant f**K!

First off, obviously we touched a nerve with the you hooking up with fat chicks. CALM DOWN. Second glad you copy and paste your stats, shows a real solid knowledge. Third, you don't prove your argument by making up a fake argument for me and then arguing against it. I NEVER COMPARED PEYTON MANNING TO FREEMAN. I was merely pointing out your flawed thinking that Peyton was this perennial winner. Peyton Manning never won a NATIONAL TITLE like you insuiate. HE NEVER BEAT THE GATORS his entire college career. In fact the year he was favored to take them to a title he threw 4 INTs against yet another loss to Florida. So how is that ignorant, i pointed out facts, you made up arguments. Finally Peyton played for a perennial powerhouse at the time with multiple NFL talent players on the team, and Josh Freeman played on a mid to basement dweller with little to no NFL talent on his team. Bottom line get off your high "wanna be" football psychic powers, and let the kid play a meaningful game before bashing him with your ASSumptions.

8:14pm, September 1, 2009

don't give me this Freeman had no talent around him crap, he had Jordy Nelson for two years, who did Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco have in college and they had worse receivers.

8:17pm, September 1, 2009

Peyton never won a national championship, weel did Marino, Montana, Elway, Favre etc, etc terrible example

8:18pm, September 1, 2009

"Peyton was never a pernial winner you say well I guess you didn't read the article, Peyton won 39 of 45 games started (please) so he couldn't beat Florida not many teams do in big games alas the two championships in three years.

8:20pm, September 1, 2009

litzy1

your right cause no QB that wasn't a world beater in college never become a good QB EVER....cough "tom brady" cough, kurt warner, Tony Romo, ect. Your tilting at windmills, trying to make your perceptions a reality. You have no facts to base it on because the kid hasn't played, so all you can do is complain and assume.

8:21pm, September 1, 2009

jongruden

You said Manning never won a championship dummy don't change your examples because your losing an argument

8:23pm, September 1, 2009

Your the one who brought Manning in the discusion of Freeman saying " Manning choked his entire career" people can only dream of having the college and NFL career Manning has had call me in about 5 years to tell what Freeman did.

8:25pm, September 1, 2009

litzy1

Peyton also lost to Memphis in the same season they were ranked pre-season favorites to win the title. Bottom line like I said before we aren't comparing Freeman to Manning. Freeman can only be compared with what he will do as a pro for the Bucs, which hasn't officially even begun yet, so to argue with someone who obviously has an agenda or a built in dislike for the guy is ridiculous.

8:25pm, September 1, 2009

and good job evading the Freeman college career, I mean what could you say really.

8:32pm, September 1, 2009

yes, you were still the one who was comparing Freeman to Manning to begin with. That's all this was over, comparing the kid to greatest in the NFL before he's play in a game. YOU BROUGHT MANNING into it, i merely commented on it. Bottom line, you got your bias and your sticking to it. Enjoy the season, ease your hate and maybe you'll enjoy life a little more. scubog

Why don't you guys just call each other on the phone so the rest of us don't have to see this babble.

We all know jongruden didn't like the Freeman selection due to his extensive film study and research on him. All of the teams that employ experienced individuals to do this sort of thing and Mel Kiper, somehow came to the conclusion that Freeman could one day become an NFL quarterback and at worst be drafted in the 3rd round. Of course we all know a QB drafted after the 3rd round or not drafted at all won't ever make it. Guys like Romo, Brady, Warner, Garcia will all "suck" eventually.

But jongruden believes none of that because he checked out a few highlights, pulled up football powerhouse Kansas State's won-loss record and Freemans statistics and determined he "sucked" .

Part of those statistics included Freemans starting as a "true" freshman. I don't think DoubleT did that at Florida. To not think there is a drastic difference between the team surrounding Freeman and the teams surrounding Manning and Tebow is just stupid.

At least give the kid a chance "Dude".

Horse: I agree with you on your assessment and optimism, but have to take a small exception to the statement "Coach Morris, you are showing your courage and leadership."

If Morris was truly courageous, he would start Freeman.

Otherwise, I share your optimism. I think we are doing what's right for the future, finally. This reminds me of the 1994-1995 season.

7:23am, September 2, 2009

Duh

rcpadrick - To clear this up the 94-95 season the Buc's were 6-10. Thats something to strive for I guess.

Start Freeman, Lefty does nothing but waste time. What good could Freeman possibly learn from Lefty? How to add 2 seconds to his delivery. Please.

C'mon Morris, Man up and start Freeman.

8:20am, September 2, 2009

For developmental reasons, Freeman needs to be #2 to get reps in practice. Being #3 doesn't help you, actually, it can hurt.

LoganBucs37

Can't wait to see the greatness which is Josh Freeman. Let's see how he picks apart that 3rd string defense. Shouldn't be hard for the best player in the draft.

9:59am, September 2, 2009

rcpadrick

LoganBucs37: You do realize that there are 10 other players on the field with Josh Freeman, right? I expect him to do well, but watch him specifically. You can't judge his proficiency just by how well the offense as a whole does.

I guarantee if you put Payton Manning on the Bucs third-string offense, his numbers would suffer, too.

Watch Freeman ... his delivery, his decisions, his movement, his presence, etc. If he stinks it up, I'll be the first to say it. But if he does his job as well as can be expected given the talent around him, then all of you "haters" should man up, as well.

Here's some stats for you, too:

Ryan Leaf (senior season): 3637 yards 33 TDs 10 INTs
Akili Smith (senior season): 3763 yards 32 TDs 9 INTs
Tim Couch (senior season): 4,611 yards 38 TDs 17 INTs

Should I keep going???

How about recent Heisman QBs? -- Andre Ware, Gino Toretta, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke and Jason White

How are these guys doing? As a matter of fact, only Carson Palmer is an elite QB out of recent (past 20 years) Heisman winners.

Let's talk about "the most amazing passer in NCAA history" Matt Leinart? He can't even beat out Kurt Warner, and MAY NOT be the backup!

All this means is stats can say whatever you want them to say. Watch the game. Watch the guy. If he can play, it doesn't matter what his stats were in college.

What were Tom Brady's stats? How about Brett Favre? Ben Roethlisburger? Drew Brees? I don't seem to remember any of those guys destroying NCAA records.

11:00am, September 2, 2009

Rcpadrick- I was listening to you untill you said "Leinart could not beat out Warner for the job" thats when you fell off, Warner had one of the best seasons in football last year and took the team to the super bowl, all I'm saying is if your trying to make examples try to be better prepared it makes you sound ignorant. Leinart threw for 350 yards in one half last week, I would trade Freeman for Leinart right now.

11:20am, September 2, 2009

jongruden

RcPadrick- I will take into account you don't follow college football, look at Brees stats and Roethlisbergers stats in college unbelievable. Freeman's draft status rose in the draft due to a poor class coming out and his has great size and arm, thats it. They said he was a project, which rarely turns out for the better, keep thinking positive though doesn't hurt.

11:23am, September 2, 2009

Drew Brees (senior season): 3,909 yard 25 TDs 12 INTs
Roethlisburger (senior season): 4486 yards 37 TDs 10 INTs

Josh Freeman (last season): 2,945 yards 20 TDs 8 INTs , rushing stats: 404 yards 14 TDs (34 total TDs)

Except for passing yardage, how do those numbers not compare?

Either way, stats are meaningless, which was my ORIGINAL POINT!!!!

jongruden you really do hate the guy, the pick and the team who picked him. With fans like you this team does not need any haters from other teams. You fulfill that role.

BTW where is the oracle of Bucfan47? He too is no Freeman fan, he should chime in to support you guys.

Also did Leinart beat out Curt Warner for the job? Just checking.

I guess to be a true Bucs fan I should love every pick the Bucs ever make because to do otherwise would be ridiculous. I suppose you also loved the Dexter Jackson pick? Jay Cutler would not have beaten out Warner last year what exactly is your point Legion?

I agree w/Jongruden, Freeman is a joke, can someone tell me why they would be excited about the Freeman pick?

1:45pm, September 2, 2009

FilmBuc

jongruden,

I'm not sold on Freeman just yet either. But...
Be careful basing all of your predictions on college stats. Per your argument, Danny Wuerffel should be an NFL star and Tom Brady should have never been given a chance.

Guys like Brady and a certain QB who won a Super Bowl in Tampa couldn't hold onto starting jobs in college - yet because of intangibles coaches saw in them - excelled in the NFL when given the chance.

Most would argue that Bellichick is the top coach in the NFL. The last two QB's to come out of his system is a 6th round draft pick who rarely got the start in college (Brady) and a guy who hadn't started since high school (Cassel). Think he gives a damn about college stats?

1:55pm, September 2, 2009

jongruden

FilmBuc- I can see your point! I would like to take a chance on a guy who was successful in college than unsuccessful in college.

2:21pm, September 2, 2009

legion3

My point is you may be a bucs fan but you seem obsessed with what you perceive as the failures of the Bucs. No you don't have to love everything they do but you spew hate.

Nothing is going to change the pick. Freeman will be the starting QB of the Bucs at some point. If you can't get over it, you will be a very unhappy person for the forseeable football future.

You can't always get what you want and you must adapt and overcome and work with what you have.

"Our country...may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong!" Stephen Decatur. - A true fan.

What's to get excited about.

Freeman is a big strong kid with a big strong arm with good wheels and a great attitude who did what he did in college. College is now behind him and now he needs to do what he can for the Bucs.

Reminds me of modern day Doug Williams when we drafted him (for those of you old enough to remember).

And hopefully we will get off the QB carosel that John Gruden got us stuck on.

For those of you who just want to hate on the kid go ahead, its a free country but I for one would like to give the kid a chance, something some of you don't seem to even want to do.

It must be nice being perfect.

Legion- Let me say this, I am a huge Bucs fan and have been for 24 years my family has had season tickets for 22 years, but I like our presidents of the past I will always agree with the decisions that are made, it doesn't make me less of a patriot or a fan. I will stand behind this kid because he is my qb and will be at least for the next 3-4 years, I still have my Vinny Jersey if that tells you something.

Good I'm glad you will stand behind the kid. He's going to need it. And I still have a Steve DeBerg jersey.

Here is a question who was the better Bucs QB? DeBerg or Vinny?

I was born and raised here in Florida and remember when the only sports franchise in Tampa was the Rowdies!

24 years so you missed the Banditball days of the USFL. For a time the only good football played in Tampa stadium.

DeBerg wasn't great but he was better than Vinny, he was the best play action qb besides Boomer Esiasen. Nope never got to see the Bandits I remember when Bennett got fired everyone in Tampa was clamoring for Spurier, got Perkins instead, so I have been through the hardships.

DeBerg was very good...........when he was sober. What was the saying, "good enough to get you beat."
