Bucs Release Mahan

The Buccaneers have released backup center Sean Mahan. Mahan, a 2003 fifth-round pick, who was re-acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last year, was not at practice on Wednesday afternoon.

Tampa Bay replaced Mahan on the roster with guard Marcus Johnson. With the 49th selection in the 2005 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected Johnson. He played in 47 games with 18 starts over four seasons. Johnson signed with the Raiders this past offseason but was released by Oakland on August 31st.

In other news, Bucs wide receivers Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton returned to practice Wednesday.

Bryant (knee surgery) and Clayton (hamstring) initially returned to practice Monday, but did not participate in Tuesday's workout due to a change in the schedule that did not allow the players enough time to warm-up properly.

Although they're back on the practice field, neither Bryant nor Clayton is expected to play in Tampa Bay's preseason finale vs. Houston on Friday night.

In addition, Bucs rookie running back Kareem Huggins (knee) is practicing with the team, which is sporting shorts, jerseys and helmets this afternoon.

Bucs kicker Matt Bryant (hamstring), tight end John Gilmore (calf), safety Donte Nicholson (quad) and linebacker Adam Hayward (ankle) are not practicing today.

PewterReport.com will have more on this story later today.

WTF? Uhm...and with Faine's nagging groin injury, this was a smart move? Can't wait to hear why.

Jeff you gotta be kidding me right? ANYBODY would be better than this cat. Great move by the Bucs. Probably the best addition by subtraction they've had in years!!!!

Probably because that undrafted free agent Center Bruggerman is going to take that spot.

This was the right move. An issue of PR could block better than Mahan, and I'm sure would count much less against the cap.

I think Mahan was scheduled to make something ridiculous like $3mil this season from his Pittsburgh contract. $17mil/5yrs was straight retarded for this guy...

Good move.

I think Mahan had his contract redone earlier in the year.

Ask Luke McCown what he thought of Mahan's blocking against the dolphins last Thursday.
