The Bucs signed cornerback Marcus Hamilton and safety Corey Lynch Wednesday. Hamilton, who originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick with the Bucs, and Lynch fill the two 53-man roster spots created by safeties Jermaine Phillips and Steve Cargile.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't wait long to fill the two roster spots created by the team Tuesday when it placed safety Jermaine Phillips (broken thumb) on injured reserve and released S Steve Cargile.

The Bucs signed free agent cornerback Marcus Hamilton and safety Corey Lynch on Wednesday.

This isn't Hamilton's first stint with Tampa Bay. He originally entered the NFL with the Bucs as a seventh-round pick in 2007. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Hamilton spent his rookie year on Tampa Bay's practice squad. During his second season, Hamilton was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster for Tampa Bay's 27-24 overtime win over Chicago.

However, when the Bucs attempted to sneak Hamilton back on their practice squad, the Bears blocked the move by signing him to their active roster. The former Virginia standout spent training camp with the Bears before being released just before the start of the 2009 regular season.

Lynch (6-0, 206) originally entered the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals as a sixth-round pick in 2008. The former Appalachian State star spent most of his rookie season on injured reserve, and was released by the Bengals in September before being re-signed to the team's practice squad. Lynch had 24 career interceptions and a key field goal block in Appalachian State's upset win over Michigan in 2007.

According to Bucs defensive coordinator Jim Bates, Lynch could play vs. the Giants on Sunday.

“He’s a bright young man,” said Bates. “He just got our game plan, and his knowledge as far as what we’re trying to do is pretty remarkable. We’ll see how he progresses the rest of the week, but he got off to a pretty good start.”

The Bucs have been dealing with some serious depth issues in their secondary. In addition to placing Phillips on injured reserve and releasing Cargile, Bucs starting S Tanard Jackson still has two games remaining on his four-game suspension due to violation of the league's substance abuse policy, and rookie CB E.J. Biggers (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve last week.

Can't get Tanard Jackson back quick enough. He will make a difference back there.

Of course the real difference will come when a pass rush actually happens. When was the last time they had one? 3 years ago? 4? more?
Sad.

I like the moves. I hated to see Hamilton get scooped up by Chicago in the first place. Also, it sounds like Lynch can help out on special teams, which we will need since our special teams captain is now a starting safety.

also really bummed to see biggers go on IR . was really excited to see what he could bring to the team.

Glad to have Hamilton back. Chicago was able to get him because the NFL suspended Mack for his hit on the precious Matt Ryan.
Go Bucs!!!!

Decent pick ups.

Let me just say something about playing Freeman. I think he needs to come in and play a series this game and start adding to it every game. There is no reason that he can not practice/rehearse 5/6 plays for a game. Getting some experience is important this year so he has that under his belt for next year. There is no way I would start him right now, but he should play in the rest of the games.
Go Bucs! Get Better!

Remember watching Lynch at App. State and he flies to the ball and hits. He is not afraid of contact like his fellow App. State alumn, D-Jax.Never thought that the Bucs would get him but... Great move...

I'm just sooooooooooooooo excited to have another App. State great performer on the team. If he works out half as well as the last guy...

I like the pick-ups although it sounds as if Lynch has a hard time staying healthy.

Horse, I agree with you on Freeman. The only issue is the Bucs don't want him playing long in the event Leftwich gets hurt and that's why they have Johnson as #2 on game days. But a series or two in some of these games, even if it's garbage time, is helpful.

Not a bad point you made there Horse...makes some sense. I like the Hamilton signing...thought the kid played hard when he was given an oppurtunity so will be nice to see if he can develop. Go Bucs!

Just some thoughts.....
Why is it these signings sound so good?
Why is it we can't get a pass rush?
Aren't you glad we didn't get Peria Jerry...(btw, he is on IR)
Back in the day when we needed a pass rusher we worked a deal and got Simeon Rice who continued to bring it. Now we got Gaines Adams, who may look the part but lacks the technique.
Who is ready to make a deal out there? What are the options on Offense and Defense?
I still think a trade should be made for the likes of Boldin...
Is there anyone else we should want who is young enough and good enough to play here?

What exactly would they trade? Say we trade a 1st rounder for Boldin (which the cards would NEVER do) - how do we get help on the Dline and in the secondary?

Unfortunately, the only asset the Bucs really have is cap room - but that asset is useless during the regular season.

This is the 2009 team. Period. The bucs are doing exactly what they intended, evaluating all the talent on the roster by letting the young guys play - so that next offseason they know exactly what they need.

The only hope is that once those needs are identified (after a full season, not just 2 games) the Bucs open up their wallets and use their cap room (all of it) to improve the team.

I don't know enough about Hamilton to comment. However, Corey Lynch was one of the main focuses of the HBO series "Hard Knocks" if anyone watched it. The Bengals really liked this kid, and they had a big debate the final day of cuts on whether to keep him or another safety.

I'm not saying this kid is the second coming or anything more then a stop gap till T-Jax gets back BUT, he made some big plays in the preseason, and fly's around the field with some intensity so all things considered hopefully he can hold the fort, and potentially become a special teams stud once we get Tanard back.

Exactly Filmbuc................. fans need to remember that.

Chicago Corey

Oh good. Corey Lynch was that guy that was afraid to hit anyone on the HBO Hard Knocks show. Thats what we need!

I would hate to trade away any 1st rounder pics, in hopes that new regime would use wiser then has been done in a long time. I guess all we have is the money. All we can spend it on is FA. So who would you want, here are a few I found, however you may know of others:

WR Lee Evans, Brandon Marshall, Vincent Jackson, Terrell Owens, Antonio Bryant, Braylon Edwards, Steve Breaston (restricted), Kevin Walter, Domenik Hixon, Josh Reed, Miles Austin, lance Moore,

DE Luis Castillo, Julius Peppers, Aaron Kampman, Elvis Dumervil, Marcus Spears, Reggie Hayward

DT Vince Wilfork, Casey Hampton, Ryan Pickett, Tony Brown, Aubrayo Franklin, Kedric Golston

RB Ronnie Brown, Carnell Williams, Willie Parker, Adrian Peterson (yeah not a chance right), Ricky Williams, Chester Taylor, Leon Washington, Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas(restricted)

LB Barrett Ruud, DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman, Karlos Dansby, Omar Gaither, Chris Gocong, Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard, DeMeco Ryans, Thomas Davis, Derrick Johnson, D'Qwell Jackson, Larry Foote

DB Dunta Robinson, Carlos Rogers, Ellis Hobbs, Marlis Jackson, Terrence McGee, Leigh Bodden, Roderick Hood, Karl Paymah, Fabian Washington
