Tampa Bay traded defensive end Gaines Adams to Chicago for a 2010 second-round pick (Cliff Welch)

Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik made himself available to the media at Raymond James Stadium just before the Bucs' game vs. the Carolina Panthers kicked off Sunday. Dominik explained the team's decision to trade DE Gaines Adams to Chicago for a 2010 second-round pick.

Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik spoke to the media in the press box at Raymond James Stadium just minutes before the Tampa Bay vs. Carolina game kicked off on Sunday.

Dominik addressed the team's decision to trade defensive end Gaines Adams to the Chicago Bears on Friday night in exchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick.

Adams, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, had 13.5 sacks with the Buccaneers.

Below is the Q&A session with Dominik.

Why did the Bucs trade Adams to the Bears?
"As part of this organization I'm always going to look for ways to make this organization as good as it can possibly be. We felt like with a second-round selection, which we view as a very powerful pick in the draft, it's part of a foundation we're building around here towards the football team we want to have around here."

Did the Bucs initiate the trade with the Bears?
"As a general manager, I think it's my responsibility to be in contact with all 31 teams, especially this time of the year in order to find out what's going on. If you don't know [wide receiver] Braylon Edwards is a three and a five [draft picks] you're not doing your job. We're calling around to all the clubs just talking about players to talk about what they have in terms of needs and talk about what they have that might help our football team. From there, we worked through the conversation with [Bears general manager] Jerry Angelo and initiated the trade."

What made you decide that having a second-round pick in the upcoming was better than having Gaines Adams on this football team?
"It was twofold. First, a second-round pick adds great value. We have a lot of value in the players you can add to your football team there. Two, we have some new players that might have the opportunity to play here, too. The addition of [defensive end] Michael Bennett, who will have a chance to have a hat on today and play in the ‘Go' package and rush the quarterback. [Rookie] Kyle Moore is a step away from being active and playing in games for us. We have some young players that will step up. I feel like [defensive end] Jimmy Wilkerson has played well. It comes down to value and what you got, and I felt like a second-round pick was a good value."

Did you feel Gaines was never going to reach his potential?
"I still feel Gaines has potential. Sometimes a change of scenery is good for a player. I wish nothing but the best for him. He handled this well when I talked to him Friday night. He's got a chance to work with some good people in Chicago. We're focused on the foundation we're laying here now."

Picking Gaines No. 4 overall, what would you say you got in terms of value for that pick?
"Bottom line is we took a player with the fourth overall pick and it did not pan out the way we had hoped. So, what we did was turn that into a second-round pick, and it's up to the people here right now to make sure that pick matters."

With Gaines Adams, a high first-round pick, and Dexter Jackson, a second-round pick, not panning out, what does it say about this team's scouting staff?
"I think it is one of those things in what does it say about what we want to do as an organization," Dominik said. "We are going to continue to provide this team with the best players possible. If we don't feel a player is can do what we are looking for then we are going to move on and find that type of player."

Was this a message on accountability to the players?
"In a way you can say it is accountability, it is also what you perceive the value that you can get," said Dominik. "You have to decide if it was worth it for us. For me it was worth trading Gaines Adams for a second-round pick."

Will you look to trade this pick for a veteran on the trade market?
"I have a hard time letting go of this draft choice," said Dominik.

Hey Dom,

Rather than talk about how "great" a 2010 2nd round pick is for this organization how about you talk about how awesome a feeling it was to know how good your scouts felt about using the 4th overall pick in the 2007 draft on a player that could net such a prize.

You freaking genius you...

great point "heavye". If you can't pick a winner with the fourth overall pick in a draft, how on earth will you "make it count" as a second rounder? Our drafts have simply sucked. Get a new recruiting staff or get proven veterans in trades.

It is about time the people in charge did something that makes sense. Gaines will probably got to Chicago and be a freaking superstar but he certainly was not getting it done here in Tampa Bay. I agree that the scouting department is apparently not very good and some changes need to be made. Let's face it, we are now 0-6 with not a much hope on the horizon. It is time to let some of these younger players get as much experience as possible, I had hoped that a win against the Panthers would spark something positive. It is awfully hard to do anything now with a 0-6 record.

This defense is a terrable trade hovan, cox, sims and one other starter on defense and clayton, bryant, (not that bryant is bad you just wont be able to sign him) for more 2nd round picks

Dominik, no guts! You didn't answer the scouting question.
Oh yeah, you can't, because these scouts are already half way through the college football season giving you information on our next draft selections in 2010. Isn't that a little scarey?

If we can trick a foolish team into a 2nd round pick for Barrett Ruud, I would do it in a heart beat.

Is it the scounting department though? The problem with the Adams pick was taking any DE in that class as #4 overall. Adams may very well have been the highest rated DE (they all have struggled in the NFL), but everyone knew he had a motor issue -- including the Bucs scounting Department. The fault lies with Allen for getting the Bucs in a position where they felt they had to take a DE at 4, rather thatn the best available player. The same is true with Jackson. We do not know how the scountign department rated Jackson. What we do know is the Bucs felt, once again, that they had to have a speedy receiver/return man that year. THere were none left, so they reached for Jackson. To me that sounds like a GM problem, not a scouting department problem. Where the scounting department has failed is with late round picks.

Great poing Vince, we will never know who it was exactly, or if it was any one individual, but hopefully we have learned to never, EVER, draft for need. I just hope Freeman works out, arguments can be made that he was the best available at the time.

It would have done absolutely no good to throw anyone under the bus and I am glad that he did not. If you are going to trash the scouts for one pick you have to praise them for others, so it doesnt work.

Dominick did not answer the question about scouting dept accountability and apparently there was no follow up to get an answer.
He should also have been asked a) anybody interested in trading a 7th for Clayton or b) why is he still starting?

So basically you bitch and complain at how bad Gaines Adams sucks, then complain when they trade him and don't answer the questions the way you want them answered?
You people really need to get a grip.

OF COURSE the selection was bad. So was Dexter Jacksons and Michael Claytons (who will be traded next). Mark's not going to throw the scouts and others under the bus. GRUDEN wanted D-Jax and Clayton. KIFFIN wanted Gaines Adams. Blame goes all around. They know they need improvement there. The best thing to do is cut your losses and get what you can and move on.

If anything, the guy should be getting PRAISE right now for getting a 2nd round pick out of this. If he can pull off a 4th rounder for Clayton then he is a genius. LOL

Anyway, I know it is frustrating, but that is rebuilding. Mistakes will be made. At least they are correcting them and making the best of them.

I am still in shock they got a 2nd rounder out of it.

Gaines Adams must be turning cartwheels with glee at being allowed to escape to a team that may have some near future, since the Bucs certainly don't!

Good for you Gaines. Better a Bear than a Buc today.

I hope everything works out well for Gaines Adams in Chicago, however, I am more concerned about the BUCS front office. The scouting department identifies the players, grades them out and makes recommendations to the General Manager. They do not make the selections on draft day, therefore, they are not my concern.

The reason the BUCS are in the position there in today is the failure of Allen and Gruden to draft well. Their track record speaks for itself. They drafted Adams because he was the best DE in the draft that year and none of the DE have performed well from that class to date. I firmly believe in the concept that you draft the "best available player" at the time, NOT, draft for a specific need at the time. Calvin Johnson, from Georgia Tech, was available at that time and we let him go!!!

Dominik and Morris have started out okay. Their first draft class has really performed well this year. If last year's draft is any indication, the BUCS should be back in the hunt by 2012......that is, if the NFL is still playing football then and I am not convinced they will be!!!

dcrum,

Sadly, you are incorrect about your "gruden wanted" rant. Gruden did NOT want Dexter Jackson, (rumored he favored Brian Brohm), and called out the pick almost immediately after getting a couple of TV appearences at NFL Network when he admitted it was a mistake (before that scrub even got to his second training camp).

billybyrne,

The scouts are the lifeblood of your draft. You as a HC might like a player, or as a GM, but in either of those positions you defer much of your decision-making to the scouting director and use scouting reports for guidance because you spend much of the season on other things. The BOTTOM LINE is that the scouts did not rate Jackson a 7th round pick and Allen picked him in Rd 2. If they rated him as a 2nd day pick Allen would've waited until....the 2nd day. If the scouts rated Gaines a late first rounder then Allen would not have drafted him in the top 5 etc...

Maybe I was wrong on that, it doesn't change a thing. My point is the drafting around here has been bad for years and blame goes to everyone: scouts, head coaches, assistant coaches, the GM etc...

I am not trying to blame anyone in particular. I am simply pointing out that Gaines Adams has a total of 13 sacks in 36 games and very few sacks when it actually matters. He can't defend the run except in pursuit. The guy is a bust. I like him and hope he does halfway decent, but overall he has been a bust. A 4th overall pick should not take 3+ years to develop unless he is a QB.

The fact that Dominick got a 2nd roun pick for him is amazing. His production screams conditional 4th thru 6th rounder. The Bears were robbed.

BucCaddy80 Well Said!!

The Buc's scouting has bee HORRIBLE for years. I would guess that Dungy, Gruden, and Allen overrode the scouting department to get the hits we do have. Like Caddy, joseph, Ruud, TJack.

Clayton was a hit, then got married or something, and now cant even catch a cold. Just like Sears, who knew he was a head case?

But good front offices have a feeling for this crap and stay away from it. They dont draft people with no heart, they draft nasty people that want to play football, and would do it for free if they were not in the league. Harvin, Colsten, A. Peterson, we have not picked anyone in that class since Brooks.

With our front office wont anytime soon.
