Freeman Sees Action As Bucs Lose In London

UPDATED: Tampa Bay lost to New England in London, 35-7, as Patriots QB Tom Brady threw three TDs while Bucs QB Josh Johnson was picked off three times before being replaced by rookie QB Josh Freeman, the team's first-round draft pick in 2009. The Bucs are 0-7 on the season heading into their bye week.

The Buccaneers lost to the New England Patriots, 35-7, to fall to 0-7 on the season. But that wasn’t the biggest story line to emerge from the NFL’s 2009 International Series in London, England.

The Josh Freeman era has officially begun.

Freeman, Tampa Bay’s first-round draft pick in 2009, saw his first regular season NFL action, entering the game at the 9:25 mark in the fourth quarter with the Bucs trailing 35-7. Bucs head coach Raheem Morris phoned Mark Dominik before inserting Freeman to make sure he was on the same page as the general manager.

“I did. I always go and talk to Mark Dominik,” Morris said. “Mark Dominik is the guy I lean on. That’s the guy we always talk to. We evaluate. We communicate everything. I wanted to give him a head’s up.

“We talked about it and we’re okay. We’re okay. We’re comfortable in our decision to go ahead with Josh.”

Morris didn’t necessarily commit to starting Freeman against Green Bay after the team’s bye week next Sunday, saying only that “Everything will be evaluated over this weekend.”

However, with a 0-7 record, it may be hard to stick with Josh Johnson, who didn’t fare well against New England. It appears as if his tenure as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback is over – at least for now.

Johnson, who went 0-4 in his four starting opportunities, was only 9-of-26 for 156 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions against New England, including one that was returned for a 39-yard touchdown by Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather, who had two on the day, on Tampa Bay’s opening possession. It was the shakiest and most sporadic game of Johnson’s young NFL career and it may be the last for a while.

However, Freeman’s debut wasn’t much better. His first drop back resulted in a 7-yard sack, followed by a 13-yard completion to Brian Clark on his first NFL pass attempt. His pass attempt to Kellen Winslow was incomplete on third-and-5.

On his next series, Freeman took a delay of game penalty and was sacked again, fumbling on his second takedown. He finished his two drives 2-of-4 for 16 yards and a QB rating of 60.4, which was about 30 points higher than Johnson’s.

“More opportunity to evaluate our people,” Morris said, when asked why Freeman was inserted into the game in the fourth quarter. “You’ve got a neutral ground. You’ve got nothing out there. We weren’t going to make a comeback. You have an opportunity to get out there and get people evaluated and get Josh some reps, so we made the change at quarterback.”

Across the field, Tom Brady showed the Buccaneers what a real quarterback looks like, completing 23-of-32 for 308 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Brady was only sacked once and connected with receiver Wes Welker ten times for 107 yards and one touchdown.

Brady also hit wide receiver Sam Aiken for a 54-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and tight end Ben Watson had a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter as the Patriots poured it on and pulled away.

“When he got his opportunities he made them, and that’s what great quarterbacks do,” Morris said.

The Bucs don’t know if they have a great quarterback or not in Freeman, but will begin finding out in two weeks when he likely gets his first start against the visiting Packers after the bye week. During the bye week, the Bucs also need to re-discover their running game in order to give Freeman more support.

Tampa Bay rushed for only 89 yards on 26 carries (3.4 avg.) against New England, with Derrick Ward accounting for 48 of them. The Bucs defense did a much better job defending the run than it did a week ago when it allowed Carolina to rush for over 250 yards. The Patriots rushed for 107 yards on 28 carries (3.8 avg.), but 17 of that came on a quarterback scramble by rookie Brian Hoyer. Laurence Maroney rushed for only 43 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries (3.3 avg.).

The run defense was one of Tampa Bay’s improved elements on Sunday.

“You’ve seen [the team] get better every single week except for the Giants game, which I thought was a setback,” Morris said. “We just need to play better. We need to play better across the board. We’ll get better as a team.

“I don’t have a locker room divided. I don’t have guys pointing fingers. I have guys that have to dig deeper within themselves and get the best out of themselves and get ready to come back and win some football games after this bye. You’ve got nine more games, bro.”

The question is, is that how many games Morris has left as the coach of the Buccaneers if they don’t win a game soon?

Meriweather got the Patriots off to a hot start when he stepped in front of rookie receiver Sammie Stroughter and picked off Johnson, returning the interception for a 39-yard touchdown. With 12:28 left in the first quarter, New England led Tampa Bay 7-0.

Tampa Bay’s second possession was more promising as Williams picked up 30 yards on an 11-yard run and a 19-yard reception, followed by an 11-yard gain on third-and-9 by Stroughter down to the New England 33. On first down, Johnson was intercepted by Meriweather again, this time on a pass intended for Michael Clayton at the 15-yard line. Meriweather returned the pick 31 yards to the New England 46.

After the Patriots’ first drive was stymied due to a three-and-out, Brady and the offense drove 67 yards for a touchdown. Rookie receiver Brandon Tate got the drive started with an 11-yard end around to the New England 44. Brady hit Randy Moss on back-to-back plays for gains of nine yards and 37 yards down the left side of the field down to the 37. Two plays later on second-and-13 from the Tampa Bay 14, Brady connected with Welker with a 14-yard touchdown on a wide receiver screen. With 2:16 left in the first quarter, the Patriots’ lead increased to 14-0.

The Bucs offense was forced to punt after a three-and-out, and Welker returned the punt 24 yards back to the Tampa Bay 30. On third-and-4 from the 24, Brady threw a 9-yard strike to Moss for a first down at the 15. But on second-and-6 from the 11, Brady’s pass intended for Moss in the end zone was picked off by free safety Tanard Jackson.

However, Tampa Bay couldn’t pick up a first down and had to punt the ball back to New England. On third-and-10 from the Patriots’ own 46, Brady hit Aiken on a crossing route. Middle linebacker Barrett Ruud missed the tackle and Aiken cruised down the right sidelines for a 54-yard touchdown. With 11:18 left in the second quarter, the Patriots increased their lead to 21-0.

Tampa Bay finally got on the board just before halftime. Ward ripped off a 12-yard run out to the New England 47 at the two-minute warning. Three plays later on third-and-14, Johnson completed an 18-yard pass to Antonio Bryant down to the New England 33 against rookie cornerback Darius Butler. On the next play, Bryant beat Butler again down the right sidelines as Johnson dropped a beautiful pass into his arms at the goal line for a touchdown. With 1:14 left in the second quarter, New England’s lead was cut to 21-7.

The Patriots took the opening kickoff in the second half and marched 73 yards for a touchdown. Brady was 6-of-7 for 76 yards on the drive with his tight ends doing most of the damage. Chris Baker had two catches for 20 yards on the drive, including a 16-yarder on second-and-20 from the New England 41. On first-and-20 from the Tampa Bay 35, Brady found Watson down the seam ahead of linebacker Geno Hayes down the seam for a 35-yard touchdown. With 9:13 left in the third quarter, New England’s lead swelled to 28-7.

Another New England touchdown in the fourth quarter padded the Patriots’ lead, which increased to 35-7 with 9:25 remaining in regulation. The 10-play, 89-yard drive consumed 6:03 off the clock and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Maroney. Brady hooked up with Welker three times for gains of 13, 16 and 16 yards on the scoring march.

PEWTERREPORT.COM PLAYER OF THE GAME
There were few individual bright spots in Tampa Bay’s 35-7 loss to New England in London. One of those was free safety Tanard Jackson, who made a dramatic interception in front of Randy Moss in the end zone to prevent the Patriots from taking a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Jackson, who returned from a four-game NFL suspension three weeks ago, recorded his second interception in as many weeks.

Last week, Jackson returned an interception for a touchdown against Carolina. Jackson’s two picks have already tied his single-season record for interceptions that he set as a rookie in 2007, and he has nine more games to play this season. Jackson was also the leading tackler for the Buccaneers in London, notching a season-high eight stops, in addition to breaking up a pass.

IT WAS OVER WHEN…
For all intents and purposes, this game was over when New England safety Brandon Meriweather intercepted Josh Johnson and returned the pick 39 yards for a touchdown during Tampa Bay’s opening possession due to the talent differential between the two teams. New England is a Super Bowl-caliber team, while Tampa Bay is still looking for its first win of the season. Once the Bucs fell behind, they had little realistic chance to mount a comeback on such a superior team. By the time the Bucs scored a touchdown before halftime, the Patriots had already put 21 points on the board. The Bucs never pulled within less than 14 points.

STATS THAT COUNT
The Buccaneers have started off the season 0-7 for the first time since 1985 when they did so under head coach Leeman Bennett. Tampa Bay has now lost 10 straight games, dating back to last year. It’s the second-longest losing streak since the team started off 0-26 from 1976-77. … Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib recorded his fourth interception of the season when he picked off Tom Brady in the second quarter. That ties his single-season high from a year ago. Talib leads the Bucs in interceptions this season. … Stylez G. White and Jimmy Wilkerson combined to sack Tom Brady in the second quarter. Wilkerson leads the Bucs with a career-high 5.5 sacks, while White has 1.5 sacks on the year. … The Patriots were 6-of-12 (50 percent) on third downs, while the Buccaneers were 4-of-15 (27 percent) on third downs. … Running back Derrick Ward led the Bucs with 48 yards on 13 carries (3.7 avg.), while Cadillac Williams was held to 29 yards on 11 carries (2.6 avg.). … For the second straight week, rookie Sammie Stroughter led the Bucs in receiving with three catches for 63 yards. … Wide receiver Antonio Bryant had his second touchdown catch of the year and finished with two receptions for 51 yards.

Did you expect some other outcome?

Nope, that's about what I thought would happen to the Bucs today. The same thing I see happening the rest of the season.

Boy Blunder and the Slumpbusters

Being a bottom feeder starts at the top. Thanks for nothing Glazers. I'm breaking out the paper bag and attending the last few horrific home games as the Unknown Fan.

It be different if we haven't had the most cap room in the NFL for five straight years. Top $$$ to watch slop - I'm voting with my money and dumping two sets of season tickets.

It pisses me off because at times I see moments of good offense......I know Johnson had some bad mistakes that were all on him....but I truly believe the heart of the Bucs problem starts with the play calling....I mean for god sake....call up some trickery or wildcat or something...we have the personel...

We have all seen some REALLY bad Buccaneer football in the past, but THIS team is right up there near the top. Most of the time this offense really sucks, but on the rare occasion that they make a big play, some dumbass takes it all away by making a bonehead foul- USUALLY for a 15 yard penalty. Hells bells, people... you are not good enough to get by with shooting yourself in the foot ! Two weeks from today, make a conscious effort not to add stupidity on top of lack of coaching and poor execution. Then maybe something decent will happen.

BTW, Pewter Report, please continue to send me actual paper copies of the magazine. This online thing is going to be a royal pain in the crack.

we suck, and hopefully after the season we can fire the whole regime and start over including the draft picks, get a qb in the draft we still don't have one.

Raheem was on a sideline phone before Freeman came in, was that the Glazers telling him to put the 1st round prize in? If so it says how bad things have gotten when the owners call in the personel.

our linebackers are the worst collection of Dogs-Chasing-Cars I've ever seen. it's pathetic watching as they trail their man like a puppy into the endzone, waiting for a treat.
Sit Boy, sit, good boy!
did they make any plays today, or this season?

Well I wasn't going to watch it on TV, but I watched it anyway
At least Freeman got in and he has started his NFL career. Johnson should start the next game with Freeman coming in during the game for more game experience.
At this point Raheem Morris can be an ex head coach at any time. My guess is that it will happen at the bye week.
Hey I don't blame Morris for any of this. If someone had offered me a head coaching job after just being the defensive back coach for millions I would had given it a try too.

I am just so pissed with the Glazers. I can not stand greed and that's what this is about. The mighty dollar over a good product.

My concern is that I have no confidence in the scouts and their evaluations. No telling who we will draft.

I am just glad we bit the bullet and started the rebuild this year. Yeah, I know some of you are preaching that if Gruden was here things would be different, but only slightly. The talent pool was old and most of it dried up.

Go Bucs! Try your best again next week.

5:27pm, October 25, 2009

Speechless

Raheem Morris quote before game:
"Any time you get a chance to play the New England Patriots and you get lucky enough to come out of here with a win? That develops a certain swagger. That can carry us the next nine games. It also can break you down if you go out there and get humiliated by the Patriots"

Well I'd say they accomplished the latter. So what now? Why would the head coach say this? WHY? It is best if they put a muzzle on him from now on. His mouth just gets in his way. ALL THE TIME. So I guess they will be "broken down" now since they did get humiliated by the Patriots. Job well done. I'm just speechless

Electronic magazine sucks!! I am out of state and the magazine gives me something to read. I am not local, so I only get the good stuff from here. Without the mag, I don't know what I am getting for my money.

I think it is time to look beyond Reh, I think we should demote him to defense coordinator, and bring in a new HC. I do believe Rah will be a good HC in the future, he just needs to hit the reset button and go back and learn to be a defensive coordinator for awhile and them try again at head coach.

I have to be up here in Donkey (Bronco) land and hear how great Josh McDaniel’s is. Damn Donkeys…Proof the experience at coordinator is very important

Raheem, you see a team getting better every week, must have been talking about the Pats. Asked last week if he'd start Freeman he said no short week no time to prepare him, so the dumb ass puts him in at the end of a blow out after calling his mommy to ask for permission!!! This can't get any worse.

6:39pm, October 25, 2009

Ruud didn't look good today... At the end of the game there was an all out blitz with he and Barber blitzing the left side and the Pats back up literally went right under his arm and subsequently for like a ~ 20 yard play. Earlier in the game he had the responsibility on a shallow cross from the Pats WR and missed the tackle which led to like a ~ 40 yard touchdown. Where's the tackling Ruud?

6:12pm, October 25, 2009

Watching these games is so painful. Not only do we not have enough talent, but our coaching just hasnt been up to par to put what we players we do have in decent positions to make plays.

If our o-line is struggling yet again in pass protection or run blocking, why not call some quick hitters -- WR and RB screens, hard slants, quick out passes? I saw none of those plays. Instead I saw 5 and 7 step drops with a QB running for his life and then throwing inaccurate pass after inaccurate pass. And someone tell me why Clayton is allowed to play, especially in key down and distance situations? The guy can not get open against the other teams 2nd CB or Nickel Back. Give more reps to Stroughter and even Clark/Stovall. What do we have to lose?

On defense, the lack of pressure needs to be handled a bit differently than just hoping front four can do something. And if we do get that rare blitz, why is Geno Hayes covering a speedy TE in the slot? Why not put another CB in there? Or Black since he is supposed to be faster. Dont understand why Rudd is always 5 yds behind the line when trying to make plays. 3rd and short and the guy is late hitting the hole to stop the RB who easily gets the first down. And I think it was Rudd that missed the key tackle on Aiken on the big TD pass to break open the game. Very disappointing play from who is supposed to be our DEF leader.

And why the hell did we not go for it on 4th down and short the two times we were across midfield in the 3rd quarter? Whats the point have Dirk send another wobbly, low lining punt to net 20 yds of field position?

The fact Raheem was on the phone before Freeman went in means he has ZERO decision making abilities on this team. He probably had to ask for permission to make a change. Thats just unacceptable when a head coach can't make the decisions during a game. I feel bad for him because not only do we not have enough talent to play week in week out, but he has no say in anything that goes on with the team. His coordinators are subpar at best.

Is it me or does it look like no one really cares on the sidelines? One thing I did expect from this team this year was a bit more passion, hard hitting, accountability -- traits you see from Tomlin's team and recently the 49ers. Feels like no one gives a crap when they are getting the snot beat out of them every week. Amazing that this can go on.

This really is getting old. You guys all bitch and complain like you thought they were going to win. Get a clue: they are rebuilding. Raheem needs 2 years just like the draft picks this year and next. You complain about the play calling but Raheem has nothing on offense right now but Caddy, a TE, and a decent, but THIN line.

They need a DT(CODY or SUH) in the draft, followed by a LB (SPIKES!!) or a DB. Then they need anotehr O-Lineman.

They also need to draft WRs in the later rounds and DEs.
Hopefully they can get a WR and a DE in free agency.

Th best thing that can happen for this team is the real estate market to bounce back; that is where most the Glazers money is.

I am basically saying they have alot of needs. They do not have the talent right now and the talent they do have is young and undisciplined.

I don't know about the coaches and Co-ordinators yet. Like everything else, it is a rebuilding process that takes time. Next year should be a jump to 6-8 wins. Year three should be a playoff push.
If Freeman isn't the guy, they'll know by then and then probably go after a QB in the draft or Free Agency again.

The only thing really pissing me off right now is the fact that Clayton is still starting.
At this point, cut him.

I was all for keeping Freeman on the bench all year but after the bye week, I say start him now. Might as well.

Raheem's comments of the teams getting better every week is pure smoke. He is awful and the rest of the coaching staff is there right along with him. The quality of the players is just as bad. The Glazers are milking the team but soon will find out it is going dry. There does not seem to be much hope with this bunch of clowns.

You know what's getting old, people like you saying we as fans can't " bitch and complain ". Hey cock knocker we as fans have every right to bitch as much as we want especially since a lot of us have been supporting this team for a long time now. Spending our hard earned money on tickets and merchandise, making the Glazers richer. If you don't like it, don't come on here. What are we suppose to do, just sit here and say, " well guys it's a rebuilding year and we'll just have to grin and bear it ". We'll pat Rah Rah on the ass and tell him , " maybe you'll get your first win next year coach."

Did you say 2-3 years before they make a play off push? So you're telling me that you want to go through two more years of this repugnant shit before the Bucs are relevant again? Let me tell you something, when this team goes 0-16 the Glazers are going to have to make a very serious decision regarding the future earnings of this franchise. Because you know that an 0-16 team will bring no one to the stadium to see them play and put ZERO money in the Glazers pockets. Which we all know is the most important thing here.......not the team actually turning into a true playoff contender. I don't see Rah Rah and Dummynik lasting around too long if/when this team goes 0-16.

7:40pm, October 25, 2009

pewterpirate99

And don't tell me it would be too soon to fire Rah Rah and Dummynik if they go 0-16 or 1-15. If Rod Marinelli can get fired from Detroit for the same thing, than so can the stuttering cheerleader.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Rah Rah on the phone with the puppet masters telling him to go ahead and put in Freeman. They play the tune and he does the dance doesn't he. It's completely AMAZING to me how little control/power this so called coach has. I've NEVER seen a head coach of an NFL team make a phone call to get permission to make a change in the staring line up. Or to be told to make a change in the staring line up. I mean that is the HEAD COACH's decision not anyone else's. That was an embarrassment on a global level. Not to mention how the team played, but by now we're all getting use to this embarrassment on a weekly basis.

7:53pm, October 25, 2009

Horse

pewterpirate99, I agree that is okay now for fans to complain.

The season is now half over and I don't see much improvement on the defensive side since game one.
Actually on the offensive side, I see it as getting worse. Our lineman can't handle the 4-5 man rush. We can't open a hole up for a consistent running game and Winslow and Slaughter are the only consistent receiver's.

I am now so anti Glazer . I know if they can't move the team because the NFL wouldn't allow it. Tampa Bay is a proven market. Hey this is just a thought; the Glazers are going to get the franchise for one of the NFL European Teams, and they have in principle agreed to sell the team. Now they are cashing in and not spending all liquid assets as possible.

Pinkstob - i do remember a superbowl run and 3 division championships. followed by years with key injuries.

your clueless pinkstob to say we are no better off with Gruden, i think we wen to the play offs and we went 9-7 last year so we are just as good going 0-16-lol

There goes pinkstob, with another insightful observation, that he'd rather accept being a 0-16 team instead of a competitive team under Gruden.

You can wait all you want for this current cast of clowns to try and build a winner. Point is, Glazers/Dominick/Morris dismantled a team that went 9-7 in back to back seasons, needed a few adjustments in the off season, and would have probably been at least 4-3 right now.

I am a huge Bucs fan, but people need to be real. We SUCK! It will feel like the old days in two weeks with the creamcycle uni's. Rookie GM, Rookie HC, and a scouting team that couldn't judge a wet tshirt contest equals 0-16!! Let's face the facts Bucs fans, the team is full of young players, not too much of young talent. We have some great players but we will never be able to build through the draft we these coaches and the current scout team!

I feel like I'm still watching the Offense under Gurden, (stacked box against the run, recievers who can't get open in single man coverage, & passing of 10 yards or less.) --That's not a knock on Gruden; coaches coach & players play. What I don't see is Kiffen's old Defense. Wilkerson & T-Jak are both bright spots, and Bennett (sp?) looked ok but Bates is not getting my support thus far. Does it sound crazy to maybe grab the Ravens' or the Steelers' D-line coach make them the Coordinator and try 3-4? The Bucs already need a D Tackle, Miller and Wilkerson could play the ends. Black was reported as haveing some tweener qualities...Anybody thoughts? Stupid idea? I don't know desperate men grasp at straws, and I just want a win. On the lighter side, I'm not seeing a lot of production out of Sabby, but I did enjoy his hit on Moss along the sideline, and Moss's subsequent absence from the game. I'm sure Moss would have played if there had been a need, but still I enjoyed it.

I guess if it makes you feel better to bitch and whine and complain every week, then have yourself a blast. The reality is most of you were screaming for Gruden's head and the team listened. They have a new upcoming coach with a bunch of young players. It is going to take them until 2011 to be in the playoff hunt again unless they make GREAT strides next year on defense and at QB.

I am trying to keep it civil, unlike some of you. The bottom line is if there isn't alot of improvement next year with the talent and execution... THEN it makes sense to be pissed off and call for Raheem to be fired. Until then, it just doesn't make sense to me.

It's too much work to respond to all the venom under multiple storylines. I had forgotten I even posted anything under this headline. My response to all this is already posted in "Game Grades: Defense".
