Morris Rests A Few, Glazers Respond To Sale Rumors

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris is giving his players four days off (Cliff Welch)

UPDATED: Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris held some players out of bye week practices. Ronde Barber, Aqib Talib, and Geno Hayes were among that group. Morris said they would return next week. Plus, the Glazers and the Bucs respond to rumors that they will be forced to sell or are trying to sell the Bucs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris rested some of his players during the Bucs bye week practices. Morris held out a few players that have been dealing with injuries throughout the season.

"[Michael] Clayton, Ronde Barber, [John] Gilmore, [Geno] Hayes, and Aqib [Talib] have been out the last few days," Morris said. "They've been resting their little nicks they've been getting all throughout the season. We'll get them back next week and be ready to go."

Morris said he believed those players would quickly return to the practice field after a few days off.

"I do, without being a doctor or giving you an injury report, I anticipate all those guys practicing," said Morris. "Aqib has been dealing with it the whole time the last four or five weeks, and he's been fighting through it playing and practicing. We thought this would be a smart time to get him some rest. Same deal with Ronde. Same deal with [Gilmore]. The couple guys that we did rest the last two days just were a smart decision."

Despite the Bucs resting a few players, they still had a physical practice on Thursday before breaking for the weekend.

"A little padded work, some physical play today," said Morris. "Some of it was too physical. It was good. It was a spirited practice right before they go get a little bit of a break. We got time to heal up, and time for these guys to heal the little nicks and injuries that come during the season, so they are doing that right now."

Morris said the Bucs would be off Thursday afternoon through Monday. The players will hold a practice on Tuesday, normally the player's day off, and have practice on Wednesday-Friday to get ready for the Green Bay Packers. On Wednesday, Morris announced that rookie quarterback Josh Freeman would start for Tampa Bay when they play the Packers on Nov. 8. While a lot of the players will be leaving town for a few days, Morris said that Freeman would be putting in more time at One Buc Place preparing for his first pro start.

"I'm sure Freeman will be here at least today and tomorrow," said Morris. "He might take off Saturday, and watch the game on Sunday. I'm sure he'll be back here bright and early on Monday morning at 6:00 AM like he has been since he became the second quarterback on this football team."

BUCS RESPOND TO SALE RUMORS
On 970 AM WFLA and 620 AM WDAE rumors of the Bucs owners, the Glazer family, selling the team broke out on Thursday morning by host Dan Sileo. Sileo said the Glazer's lost hundreds of millions of dollars in a ponzi scheme, and as a result they may be trying to sell the Bucs or be forced to sell the team due to their financial issues. At One Buc Place the staff viewed the rumors as fact less, and uncredible. Employees said that the Bucs are not for sale. The team did issue a brief response to the rumors.

"We are not going to respond to every unsubstantiated rumor," said public relations director Jeff Kamis after practice.

Later in the afternoon, the team issued a more forceful response. Joel Glazer, co-chairman of the Buccaneers, released the following statement, "“The report today by WDAE’s Dan Sileo about our family and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is 100 percent false.

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not, nor have they ever been for sale. In addition, our family or any of our related companies have never invested one penny with Bernie Madoff.

"The report is baseless, irresponsible and slanderous. This type of behavior by Mr. Sileo and his company Clear Channel will be dealt with in the appropriate manner.”"

"We are not going to respond to every unsubstantiated rumor," said public relations director Jeff Kamis.

Well there must be somethig to this rumor then. How hard would it have been to just come out and say 'No the team is not for sale'? And if you're not going to respond to 'every unsubstantiated rumor' then why did you respond to said rumor by saying you're not going to respond? I dunno something is fishy around here.

That's certainly one of the most equivocal 'unequivocal denials' of a report that I've ever heard. Very weak and leaves a lot of wiggle room. Where there's smoke there's fire.

With the Glazers so cash poor (no denial on their part can refute the facts) there is no hope for improvement with this team unless they indeed sell. Eddie Debartolo, please step up!

If the Glazers don't sell the team to a proven winner who will clean house from top to bottom and hire football people WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING, this team is destined for a late 80's thru mid 90's redux.

Whatever you do Glazers, please do not let your current staff have anything to do with the 2010 Draft!

>that would be a great Christmas gift, I would LOVE for

Really? Not me. Anyone remember how the team looked under Hugh Culverhouse? Ask Redskins fans how they feel about Little Danny Snyder buying that team from the Cooke family. Not to mention investors from Los Angeles or Las Vegas that want to bring football to their markets...

No, this could end very badly.

Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Many people hate the Glazers for lack of spending. Remember though, it wasn't always that way. Let us not forget they 400+ million they lost in the ponzi scheme. You can't just write that off.

Maybe, just maybe, lack of spending on the Bucs or anywhere else, is their way of rebuilding themselves first.

I'm not defending them by any means, but we all get hit in the wallet in varying scales. I have to believe they're trying their best to steady themselves in order to right our ship. Nobody WANTS to fail. I want the Glazers to spend money on my Bucs. But you know, my son wants a new bike, new shoes, Nintendo DS, games for the Wii, every toy he sees - guess what, I just became the Glazers. I've got to spread it out and do what I can within reason until things improve. We don't know what the Glazers do behind closed doors and I'm not going to even pretend to know what to do with millions or billions of dollars. All of us bitching, we're the kids that want all the toys. Sometimes we just have to wait and play with the toys we have..right now, we've got the Bucs of 2009. Enjoy it the best you can and hope Santa leaves you the new bike under the tree.

If the truth is not about to hit the fan I don't know what is. Folks, that's about as poor an answer as you'll ever find for a response to the team being up for sale.

Usually, when information appears it's normally leaked from somewhere, that's why the info becomes available. Someboyd leaked it, and nothing in that response denies anything. They are just choosing to not respond.

I think it's starting to unfold and my hunch was correct. Gruden and Allen were fired b/c there was a disagreement between their vision and the owners. The owners were strapped for cash and was prepared to not allow the team to spend money on free agents, while Allen was dead-set on moving forward and signing those players they felt could help the team win.

Both parties disagreed, obviously, and b/c of the disagreement, the two were let-go. That's about as clear-cut now as anything I've ever had a hunch about.

These guys are having financial problems, no question. How bad is it? Well, it's bad enough that word is getting around they're up for sale. It's a great way to create some free advertising by the way too. The information is leaked on purpose. Teams do it all the time when it comes to making it known certain players are going to be available, etc...

I'm sticking to my gut here. That's exactly why Gruden and Allen are no longer here.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers should become the Los Angeles Diablos......

I know there are other teams that would probably be moved first, but this be pretty sweet...

> Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Only if the smoke comes from a reliable source. Dan Sileo can't rub two sticks together let alone generate credible smoke.

1:57pm, October 29, 2009

PR - what's the risk the Bucs can be moved if sold? There must be a long term lease & other guarantees that would make a buy out nearly impossible?

2:10pm, October 29, 2009

pinkstob

This does sound eerily similar to when Kiffin responded to rumors he would be coaching the defense at Tennessee this year with "it's all just speculation".

My though is that even if they wanted to sell the team, who would buy it? Not that it's a knock on the Bucs themselves, but who in this economy would make such a large investment in a team that's not built to win right now?

"WDAE's Dan Sileo says Glazers haven't put Bucs on market yet, but Wall St. insider says family lost $400M+ indirectly to Madoff."

Ummmm, yeah - kinda like they're looking right now. What exactly do you find dissimilar about a Culverhouse team and a team which has had the LOWEST PAYROLL in the league for the last six seasons?

"The report is baseless, irresponsible and slanderous. This type of behavior by Mr. Sileo and his company Clear Channel will be dealt with in the appropriate manner.”"

The report really got under their skin didn't it? Of all the bashing of the Glazer's that's going on, it seems a bit odd that they would go into attack mode like this.

I agree - seems fishy. They never respond to anything else and are never heard from - but they certainly jumped on this.

Greedy Glazers, couldn't be happy with the profits the Bucs were generating. Had to go spend ridiculous money on a soccer team, and be in a hole. Way to destroy daddy's wealth and leave me with a bad product in tampa.

Yeah, the owners finally answered the question as to why they have produced an inferior team? It was all and is just about GREED. So we can expect next year and the following year to play out as rebuilding years. Not much to look forward too, but atleast we should have a solid foundation to go from there.

Dan Sileo the Glazier taser.

Glad something rattled the cave the glaziers hide in, to bad they don't have the stones to have a real presser with a non fawning media to answer serious questions about the $ or lack of, the team(s) they own and the general state of affairs.

Sileos's ratings will likely go up provided he's not canned. Doubt he'll keep his Bucs press credentials though.

The Buc's are worth over 1.3 billion dollars...8th in the NFL...and up to this year...a lot of revenue generated by Fans...that was the case until you fair weather bandwagon jumpers got pissed because Gruden ran this team aground with over the hill vets!

6:30pm, October 29, 2009

Stratobuc

There's a clueless take for you. Revenue is generated by the LEAGUE. TV, Merchandising, all shared by the league. Gruden was the only coach who could win with the bottom level talent these bloodsucking soccer owners gave him.

Some of the comments on this story are ridiculous.

The Glazers say "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not, nor have they ever been for sale".

And some posters read that and decide that it isn't a strong enough denial and there must be something up?!?! Huh? What the hell else could they say that is stronger?

Some of you guys have a serious paranoia problem and it's laughable.

I hope the NFL changes the way revenue sharing works. I don't want the Glazers making money with min investment while sitting back and telling everyone we are rebuilding through the draft and to be patient. Back to the old Bucs we go...Only the Glazers would try to rebuild a coaching staff, front office and team ALL at the same time.

If that's the case, cut ticket prices by 50%. Sell cokes and hot dogs for a $1. Nevermind - I still wouldn't go - The NFL looks great on my Samsung 55inch 240hz LED.

wow....I finally figured it out.....look at the picture of Morris at the top of this acrticle.....He has an ALIEN coming out of his stomach!!!!! He was being FORCED to make all of those bad decisions all this time! I hope we saved it.....given the way those thing grow...it should be 6 or 7 ft tall about 500lbs after the bye week....and ready to play defensive end!!! With the Alien.....Freeman.....and a healthy coach.....I expect to dominate from here out!

9:21pm, October 29, 2009

Really?

Do they just sit there and listen to sports talk radio every morning? WHO CARES? Do they have someone listen to this stuff and report to the boss?

Try worrying about YOUR TEAM!
In case you haven't noticed YOU SUCK.

9:22pm, October 29, 2009

Sell the team if you so desire. If not buy some talent upgrades with all of the salary room you have. You certainly ain't spending it on the coach(s). I think Mr. Edward Debartolo would make a fine owner. He is willing to spend some of his gambling money and he wants to win. He knows football enough to put football people in the position to judge football talent. Utilize Doug Williams a little more. What does Doug think of Freeman? Go Bucs! At least we will pick in the top of each round, except for that second we gave for K2.

12:10am, October 30, 2009

Easily believable. in fact, the correct answer is usually the simpilist one. They could have easily lost half their assets. Madoff screwed a lot of americans and helped drain the wealth of a lot of dead money in the USA.

The Bucs are self sufficient. The Glazers are just not using Buc money for the Bucs.

It's a sad day in Tampa Bay.

Dan Sileo was drafted in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft by the Bucs and lasted, as Billy Mayes would say, " a whopping one year" because he was pumped up on steroids and sucked as a player.

Why in the world anyone would think fat Dan would have any more inside scoop than BF47 thinks he does is ridiculous. Like the Glazers or not, this was irresponsible reporting of guesses not fact. Kinda like BF47 thinks whatever he says or predicts is fact when it's only his opinion.

You don't get to be billionaires by being stupid, cheap maybe, but not stupid.
